DNA Films Greenlights New Judge Dredd Movie

According to an announcement on 2000 AD’s message boards (via AICN), DNA films, along with Rebellion and and 2000 AD, have greenlit a new Judge Dredd film. According to the Rebellion’s CEO and Creative Director, “We can’t give away too many details at this point, but we’re looking forward to working with DNA Films to bring Judge Dredd back to the big screen.” Production is scheduled to begin in 2009.

This news is a bit shocking to me, as I remember that the first Dredd film, which starred Sylvester Stallone and Rob Schneider, was widely regarded as one of the biggest financial failures of all time, requiring a production budget of almost $100 million, but only earning a small fraction of that back domestically. Furthermore, critics weren’t too kind to it either. Nonetheless, with an interesting, developed and wildly popular sci-fi universe, and with the company behind Sunshine and 28 Weeks Later backing this up, I’m actually more hopeful about this project than apprehensive. What do you think?

Discuss: Do you want to see a better version of Judge Dredd brought back to the big screen?

Well with "reboots" being all the rage this decade, I'm not really surprised. I just hope it actually stays close to the comic material, and not end up another crap heap like the first movie was.

To answer your question: YES, YES OH GOD YES.

I actually liked the original because of what it could've been. Sure it was campy and a box-office flop, but the source material is quality stuff. Whether it be a book, videogame or comic book that I am enjoying, I would like to see it translated to film or another media as I would want more of the experience. (With the sole exception of Half-Life. No movie could ever do that series justice and would surely soil the source material.) Here's hoping that the new version will be good.

I would love to see a Sly Stallone cameo though. Maybe throw in some "I AM THE LAW" for old times sake. :)

    DITTO.

NOTHING CAN EVER TRANSLATE HALF LIFE. EVER.
  • They need to make it an over the top comedy like the comic. If they have a guy punch through another guys skull then it will be worth it.
  • The question should be why wouldn't I want to see a new Judge Dredd movie? And for that question I have no answer.
  • AlexanderSupertramp
    On two conditions:

1.) Another kick ass motorcyle jet chase scene.

2.) The Rock as Judge Dredd.
  • The Rock as the Judge. I like it.
  • tom
The Rock, eh? I could get behind that, but it's imperative- IMPERATIVE, I say- that they do not show Dredd's face this time. He's never seen in the comics, and that's the way it should be.

Did you know that Robocop was created when the rights to Dredd were denied to the producers? It's not much of a stretch to see Mega City One in the role of Delta City. A Dredd film today with CG cityscapes could be amazing and without Stallone the budget could all be on screen.
  • Joe
Epic satire opportunities if they can work in The League of Fatties as an enemy.
  • I see Vin Diesel as the new judge...but no matter what I can't get excited for this movie, its just not that interesting...
  • I think that the Judge Dredd franchise deserve a reboot because the last film wasn't that great in the firs place. It seemed to much like a futuristic comedy with no plot. I don't think the reboot will do that good at the Box Office but it's worth it to get the awful taste of Sly Stallone out of our mouths.
  • Manny
I think any movie can be a blockbuster success depending on what studio / director is working on it.
  • ...because it was such a big hit the first time...
  • Fex
    Judge Death please!
  • Joshmayhood
They obviously are going to do Judge Dredd justice and aren't looking to make it anything at all like Stallone's. If done right, it'll be bad ass.
  • Hilarious... my friend suggested The Rock and I countered with Jason Statham when I sent him this link. Please... no Vin Diesel.
  • Izzy
The fist one was DREDDful. And it seems that was where Cadillac got their current car designs from.
  • Fantastic... I've always been a fan of the Dredd comics (what few I could get here in the States)... can't wait.

If it weren't for his voice, I'd vote for Jason Statham as well... for me, Dredd needs to have a voice that'll make you think twice about what I'm about to do... something with bass... Statham just doesn't have that.

And honestly, with the right script and director, I'd back Vin Diesel. I think he only has a bad rap as an actor because he mostly stars in poorly-written, poorly-directed movies.
  • Diem
Given the present state of Diesel's career, I could see a studio casting him and saying, "Yeah, make sure he keeps the helmet on at all times."
  • Whiskey
    The helmet stays on!!!!!!!
  • judge dredd was the first movie i ever remember being excited about and being extremely disappointed. I was probably eight or nine when i saw it in theaters and i was a huge Stallone fan growing up, pretty sad.
  • hahahahahahahaha thats just another guilty pleasure. most of it was just so dumb but its just tough to pass on a Silvestri composed film.
  • Shodan
I thought Stallone did a decent job a Dredd but the movie itself was pretty bad.

Ron Perlman as Judge Dredd would be an interesting choice I think he could do it it well.
  • Can anyone tell me why Rob Schneider used to be the go to "funny" guy for action films? I mean I know he was big in the early 90's with his SNL character Richard Laymer, but I never thought him to be funny. What's worse is how do you think Schneider feels having had a big career in the early 90's and now only being able to get whatever leftovers Adam Sandler can offer the guy? A new Jude Dredd might be fun, but I don't know too many people who are cumming over it.
  • Antony
AMEN! Sweet Jesus that guy is annoying! He had his moments on snl, but he certainly was never a stand out among that cast to me. I've actually always thought judge dredd wouldn't have been half bad if his character was completely taken out of it. Interested to see what this new one will be all about
  • Ok, Jason Statham as the judge, and Lexi (Punisher: Warzone) Alexander directing.
I think that will make it justifiably badass enough.
  • I'd be interested in that.
  • James
Absolutely, Jason Statham is my choice too.
  • Judge Dredd was the first film I ever put on my fantasy list of projects I'd love to do right. For some reason I just saw a lot of potential in it, though I had never read the original material.
  • Bob
There are enough good Dredd stories to make several films. Personally I would like to see a CG animated version, especially if it took the style of the best and most underated Dredd artist, Ron Smith.
  • Rob
Can't be worse than the old movie. Unless they cast Diesel or Statham, of course. A Dredd movie would actually need some smart writers and actors, it being born out of social commentary.. the humour, fun and OTT-ness of the strip all stemmed from that.

Dredd for PM. Daily Mail & Express readers would go for that ;)
  • J. Dredd
    LAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Why???
  • this movie is special to me because it came out on my birthday, and i was a kid so i thought that was cool. i liked the movie too, it was a favorite of mine. i havent seen it in a long time so i dont know how it holds up for me now, but i know as a kid i was fascinated. if they redo it, it can definitely be good, as long as its really violent
  • Jason Statham for Dredd: he's got a good chin, and the helmet (never to come off) would cover his diminishing follicles. Obviously, they'd have to get Pete Serafinowicz to come in and do the voice...
  • D1298.LINCOLN
I COULD WRITE A FAR BETTER SCRIPT FOR OLD DREDD. GIZ A JOB. MEGA CITY IS THE STAR DREDD IS JUST A JUDGE. HE DOESNT NEED TO BE A MUSCLE BOUND BLOCKHEAD/OR A STAR.THE MONEY SHOULD BE SPENT ON MEGA CITY,ALA BLADE RUNNER.THIS IS ESSENTIAL IF A FILM IS TO SUCCEED.
  • Nick999
Ron perlman as Dredd, Doug Jones as Judge Death
  • Darron Marks
Ok you need it to be R rated violent and dark very dark
Blade Runner dark and you need Dredds character to be quite but violent and the humour needs to be subtle so if you want to know the secret to Dredd its balance.
It will be a very hard movie to make its the characters that will make or break the movie and please don't add ABC warriors or any other unrelated story thats just retarded and disrespectful to the original artists of 2000ad comics.
Last read the comics understand who Dredd is don't try to make him stand out he is a cog in a bigger wheel he was a rookie once and rookies who don't make the cut are killed remember that. Its a harsh world dark cold yet 5th element like city scapes. He rides a harley type bike not a bloody plastic flying scooter you idiots Rico was a very good character in the first Judge Dredd its just the rest of the characters were crap. Bring Judge anderson into the story remember she is a hot blonde who can read dead perps (criminals) minds she is the human side to Dredd.
H wagons are flying patrol cars we need them and clean up squads who scrape up the dead perps who judges shoot with lawgivers that are not double whammy space guns that are as crap as the flying bikes on green screens.
