When it was first announced, Disney said that Tim Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland would be filmed using a hybrid of live-action and performance-capture/computer animation. Well it appears that Burton is also employing stop animation as well. Alan Rickman, who plays the Caterpillar in the film, explains to MoviesOnline that his face is transplanted onto a completely animated caterpillar.

“So, it’s a mixture. The movie is a mixture of live action, animation, and stop motion, so it’s very complicated and I don’t think all three have been put together ever before,” reveals Rickman. “So I’ll be with a live action Alice. I will be a construct.”

I don’t believe that the three have ever been mixed together in one movie before (I’m sure someone will correct me in the comments). It also doesn’t sound like Rickman shot his part on the green screen stages at all.

Rickman tells Buzzine that he’s “only done the first stage of it, which is them recording me saying these lines quite badly. Then, somewhere down the line, they’ll have animated it and I’ll redo it.” He also reveals that Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays The Red Queen, is “in a costume and in makeup but her head is going to be made three times bigger than it actually is on top of the costume.”

  • Tim Burton is so gonna fuck this up.
  • TheMarquis
Alan Rickman will get me in the theatre, not Burton or Depp.
  • Did you see Nobel Son? He was awesome in that. I mean, the movie is terrible. But the most hilarious way possible.

now, it's on my list. thanks for the heads up.
  • brian
    dude i wanna see that!
  • Alan Rickman is an old man that I would totally do

    *ahem*
  • TheMarquis
I'm straight and i'd probably do Alan Rickman.

    *mancrush*
  • I can't wait for this movie.
  • Can't deny the man his ambition. Let's hope Burton's exact vision makes it up on screen.
  • I just hope it has a little more classy/timeless feel like Edward Scissorhands and not a loud/annoying one like that Willy Wonka shit.
  • this movie sounds more like an acid trip. I'm sure everyone in the theatre is going to be on something. This will either be horribly bad or amazingly good, we'll see!
  • tori
Well most of the time it seems like HE is on something, which is why i adore him. xD He's just got that "yeah i act like i'm on LSDs, so WHAT?" additude about him, and that makes his movies even more whymsical, dark, and beautiful. (:
  • Tim Burton likes to stay inside his comfort zone, and if Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Planet of the Apes are any indication of his abilities to adapt previous works, then I don't expect much out of this.
  • hear, hear
  • Wow I will certainly look forward to this one. I definitely would like to see stop motion in action.

Burton's problem, or my problem with Burton is that he can't seem to reform - There was ridiculous appoint of hype surrounding Sweeney Todd, but that was one of the most boring movies I've seen.

I'm not saying he's a shitty director, it's that you can always guess where the movie's going.
  • I was hoping for a more whimsical feel to the movie but i guess that's not what Burton is going for. I'll judge this style or whatever when I see the trailer.
  • I agree, I always try to wait til I see some footage to make my initial judgment. If it looks terrible after the previews I most likely won't watch it. If someone does recommend it and swears their life on the fact that the movie is good, I might watch it.
  • Rickman should keep his hair dye in - he looks like crap! sh*%^T !!!
  • I can't wait for this...Burton is the man!

I can't say I'm looking forward to this. I have come to the point where every Tim Burton film, to me, seems like his personal catharsis that devours its subject matter in the process. The original stories don't seem to be good enough to stand on their own with him, they have to be disfigured and flayed into a dysfunctional retelling.
  • Tim Burton is so boring and overrated, his films are predictable, he has become a real cliche of himself. same for Johnny Depp
  • I have to agree with the two of you. I have real mixed feelings about this. I used to like Burton a lot, but it seems like all his recent movies have depended more on his original, although predictable, visuals than on his actual storytelling.
  • Yeah, I can see where you guys are coming from.....

Although, I liked Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas, any of his other movies just didn't appeal to me.

Still, some of the visuals in this film might be worth a look. Can you imagine someone like Aronofski, Fincher, or Spike Jones tking on Alice though? That'd be cool as hell!
  • I would be way more excited if ANY of those guys were to do Alice. At least I would look forward to their vision of it. I have a feeling I've already seen Burton's vision of Alice in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Nightmare Before Christmas, The Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, etc.
  • exactly, same here, if David Fincher or Spike Jonze did Alice, you would have NO idea what to expect. but with Burton, I can already see what Alice looks like.
  • Burton peaked with Ed Wood.
  • Right on. Ed Wood was awesome.
  • I agree Ed Wood was good but it wasn't Burton's last great film. Big Fish wasn't that bad and I rather enjoyed Sweeney Todd.
  • the academy
If you all don't like Tim Burton, why the hell are you searching his new project? He obviously interests you enough to see what he is up to. Tim Burton is a visionary and a genius and those who argue differently are just trying to go against the grain for the sake of it. Get off your high horse and realize good, interesting cinemotography when you see it. There is no way he is going to ruin this, the filming itself will be a reason to see it, and Tim Burton always sticks to the core of a movie. His Charlie and the chocolate factory was more loyal to Dahl's than the original. Know what you're talking about before you post. The same goes for Johnny Depp, plus the fact he is the sexiest man alive and can do whatever the hell he wants.
  • Arrow
I couldn't agree more! Look at Burton's other movies, GOLD! I enjoy every second of all his movies and can't wait to see Alice! I also think that the returning actors is unique! I always look forward to seeing Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter playing roles in one of the most amazing cinematic experiences!
  • Tori
That is so true. Tim Burton has such a brilliance that so many do not understand. His work is pure art. I cannot wait to see what he does with Alice in Wonderland. The he chose are ah-mazing! Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar was probably the best casting that anyone has done in a while. Johnny Depp can do any role whatsoever and make it probably the best character that I've seen in a while. ^.^
Is it true that one of the ideas were for Alice and the Mad Hatter to -gulp- fall for e-each other? -hates it when JD's characters fall for someone else- xD
  • moranis
Hmmm, maybe MONKEYBONE? Directed by Burton's old sparring partner Henry Selick?
  • Winner.
  • I'm incredibly interested; however mixing all these mediums sounds like mess.
  • Yeah it seems like they have no direction yet, but I bet it's going to work out for the best.
  • I can't wait for Bruce Willis to kick him off the top of an exploding mushroom.
  • I was never a big fan of stop motion, reminds me too much of a Tool video.
  • BRIAN
DUDE THIS IS GONNA BE AWESOME! SOME HOW I MISSED WHO WAS PLAYING THE CATERPILLAR BUT IM VERYYY HAPPY FOR ALLEN GETTING THE ROLL! HAHA
  • Brain... Ha Ha
First off, It's Alan Rickman not Allen. Second, every rule of predicate explodes when you type in all caps.
  • TheMarquis
you just made my morning with that last part.
  • Brian
sory dude it was like 4am when i posted that and my spelling sux ass lol
  • Jack B. Quick
"I don’t believe that the three have ever been mixed together in one movie before "
Guillermo Del Toro usually does this (Pan's Labyringth being the most obvious example), which is actually the reason why his effects look so amazing. Put your mind to rest :-)
  • I am Alan Rickman! *Dead Ringer's joke*
  • jubb
didn't they mix a lot of different forms of animation in 'tank girl'?
  • nope. just traditional animation in a few short sequences. If they had done the entire film in that style, it would have ben amazing. Those sequences are beautiful.

We need Rickman to play another bad guy in an action film. It would generate a lot of interest.
  • get/over/it
Easy fellas, easy! Take a deep breath. Too many complaints can't be good for your health. I've never bothered with comments before, but upon reading these I couldn't resist. Allow me some of my own observations.
    1. Those who say Burton is going ruin Wonderland, what's to ruin? The story has been adapted and reimagined so many times what can Burton screw up? Lewis Carrol's work has survived everything from Disney to American McGee, I think the source material is in no danger.
    2. You should give Burton credit for finding a stye and crafting it into an art form. People for years to come will be able to pick out a Burton film as they would a Bergman or Kurosawa film, and like them he sees film as a treat for all the senses, not just people staring into the camera (Wes Anderson). No Director has a perfect record, but his average leans towards a high positive over a span of 20 plus years; that's better than Coppola's record who made two of the best movies of all time (Godfather I&II). When you look at Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd, they're perfect bookends in so many ways (think Edward and Sweeney as mirror opposites), both of which are highlights in both Burton and Depp's careers and deserved more Oscar consideration and with that in mind...
    3. Why such hate on Johnny Depp? The man single handedly brought back Swashbuckling to the cinema and turned what could have been a less than mediocre kids movie based on a Disney ride (like Haunted Mansion became) into probably one of the most memorable action/comedies in decades. Could DiCaprio do that? Depp plays against the pretty-boy type and has one of the most diverse character resumes in the business. He's long overdue for an Oscar and so many of his roles are worthy of one.
Maybe y'all should give Burton's take on Wonderland the benefit of the doubt, at least 'til we see a trailer. Knowing Burton & Depp's work, it might be worthwhile.
  • i used to like Johnny Depp but now he has become boring.

Tim Burton's work is indeed recognizable, you are right, and yet it is tragic how he has become so PREDICTABLE.
  • Daniel C.
Didn't they use all three in Life Aquatic?
