Stephen Chow Not Directing The Green Hornet

Stephen Chow will no longer be directing Columbia Pictures’ big screen adaptation of The Green Hornet after all. Apparently he has stepped down due to “creative differences”. It’s likely that Chow butted heads with the studio or producers/screenwriters Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Chow is still attached to play the Hornet’s sidekick Kato.

The studio is on the search for a new director and still plans to begin production by Spring for the announced June 25th 2010 release date. Variety says that a new director could be attached by year’s end (which is just a couple weeks away).

I actually think this is a bit of good news for the project. While I’ve certainly enjoyed Chow’s films, I am not interested in his take on this superhero franchise. I have never believed that Chow’s over-the-top style comedy would be a good fit for this project. What do you guys think?

The crime-fighting character was created by Fran Striker and George Trendle, who also created The Lone Ranger, for a radio serial that launched in 1936 on WXYZ Detriot. The series detailed the adventures of millionaire publisher Britt Reid, a debonair newspaper publisher by day, crime-fighting masked hero at night, along with his sidekick, Kato. The series has had several incarnations, including a film series, comic books, and a live-action 1960’s TV series that starred Van Williams and introduced Bruce Lee to U.S. audiences.

Seth Rogen is the worst director in Hollywood...... and he is such a bad actor

I don't understand why people aren't in uproar about SETH ROGEN as the Green Hornet. Really? Why not have Jack Black play Space Ghost next. Dorks.

i believe that "Chow’s over-the-top style comedy" along with his visual storytelling - were the only things that would seperate this film from becoming another bland adaptation/update.

it could have been unique, different.

instead we will get very predictable with a few good laughs from rogen.
  • I really don't know if this is good news or bad. To me, it's bad news because now they don't have a director and could possibly get someone terrible or not meet their first intended release date.
  • I heard an awful rumor that Brett Ratner might step in...
  • Gort
gort says that is an outrage. gort promises to destroy you measly earthlings if Chow is noy the director

ah fuck, who now? david gordon green? c'mon. chow was the best idea, unless his clash was with rogan and goldberg in which case they probably know what theyre doing (one would hope) but id think the clash came with the studio and rogan was all over whatever chow was trying for. in anycase, im still down, but with not as much glee.

that's a shame. I watched The god of Cookery and thought that was pretty good.
  • CJ7 sucked. I've liked everything else he's done. I think a more straight-forward approach is what's needed for this one.
  • kung fu hustle almost murdered me by laughter
  • You where more concerned about Stephen Chow not being a good fit for the project, rather then Seth Rogen playing the Green Hornet?
  • Weyland_Yutani
with Rogan attached, this project is already DOA. Very unfortunate. The characters had good potential for something interesting.
  • while i was hoping for a not-so-slap-sticky type of film,
i also feel as though this movie could swing in pineapple express' direction-
over the top action. which isn't always the best thing.
hopefully the right choice is made in regards to the new director.
  • I think everyone is forgetting one important element here. Rogen is an idiot and with him involved, this film will suck balls.
  • Damn, well i was interested in seeing this mostly due to Chow's involvement and it also being his first english project but now they'll probably bring in some director who'd put in their boring take in comparison to chow's surely interesting one.
  • ehwhoknows
Stephen Chow rocks, he can do no wrong, that is all.
  • Dr. Doc
the least all the idiotic haters could do is spell ROGEN'S last name right

    its ROGEN not Rogan
  • Brent
Fuck that. This movie is now dead to me.
  • Chow Rocks!
I'm with Brent. I will see it online
  • As long as Seth Rogen is playing the Green Hornet the whole project is a joke!

  • I'm not really so concerned that Chow left, but I'm really concerned about Rogan playing the Green Hornet. As far as I have heard, the didn't want to make a comedy, they want to make an action movie. Rogan can do funny action (Pineapple Express), but serious action? I'm a little wary. For that matter, in what universe could Rogan be "debonair"?
  • This will happen no matter who directs it.
  • Who cares?
  • Pretty lame...I was really excited to see him take a crack at it. Oh well...at least he's still Kato...
  • I just cant see Seth Rogen playing a superhero. It's just stupid and lame.
  • Dr. Doc
    this is good

remember people, chow wanted to make it more comedic than even Rogen wanted to in the first place
