Darren Aronofsky appeared on the Howard Stern show today, and was again downplaying the upcoming Robocop reboot/remake, which he is attached to develop and direct for MGM. When asked if he was directing the next Robocop movie, Aronofsky replied “Oh, I don’t know. We’ll See. We’re working on a screenplay. So we’re developing it but we don’t have a screenplay yet. We’re working hard on it.”

The filmmaker was also making some strange/vague comments about the project at The Wrestler junket last week. Other blogs have already begun to speculate that Darren is either off the project, or it just isn’t going to happen anymore. It’s a little to early to jump to conclusions. Darren is a n extremely sly guy, and I’m convinced that this just might be his way of redirecting the questions back to his current project.

Aside from that, Aronofsky revealed a bunch of interesting tidbits during the interview:

The Budget for The Wrestler was about $7 million, but the budget was a whopping $19 million when Nicolas Cage was attached to star. We’ve talked a little bit about this in our Toronto interview with Aronofsky, but he does say that “two days after we won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival [Nicolas Cage] sent a text saying that ‘The Ram was always Mickey, congratulations.’ He is real class.” … “I thought Nic could have done it, but I had worked so long working with Mickey that it was just the Ram in my head was Mickey.”

Tomorrow, Darren is making the journey to Stamford Connecticut to show The Wrestler to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. I don’t think they would be making such a reach-out if the Fox Searchlight/WWE weren’t interested in doing some kind of promotion for the film.

On Jennifer Connelly’s double penetration (/Film commenters have corrected me, it’s actually “ass-to-ass”) scene in Requiem for a Dream: “That was a tough night. It was a full night of shooting, and after my DP turned to me and said ‘Darren, thats the most fucked up thing we’ve ever done.’” … “I was just very strait up. It’s based on a novel by Hubert Shely Jr. It’s a very very hardcore novel. One the day of, she started to get very nervous. And I said to her, ‘Look, this film is exactly what the book is. It’s about going as dark and as far as you can go. And if we don’t go that far, we’re undermining the book and the whole point of doing the movie.”

Dave Chappelle was Aronofsky’s first choice for the role of Tyrone in Requiem for a Dream: “I always wanted a comedian for that role because when I read it in the book I thought the guy had a lot of humor. I actually went to Chappelle first and I begged Chappelle to do it.” I’m glad that Marlon Wayans got the part, because I just can’t imagine what Requiem for a Dream would have been like with Chappelle.

It was one of the best interviews on Stern in a long time..I wouldn't be surprised if Darren did a studio interview next time...It was also cool to hear him clear the air about the whole Artie Lange incident.....It's still too early to be expecting anything from Darren when it comes to Robocop but it was nice to hear him talk about it
  • I almost forgot about the Artie Lange incident. I'm assuming the story was false?
  • Darren said he didn't remember the party incident, if it did happen, and the reason why Artie didn't get the part is that Darren felt he was too recognizable and would take people out of the realism of the movie.
  • Christopher M
It never happened according to Darren...David Herman most likely was messing with Artie or it was some other "Film School Fag"...lol...that's classic Artie thought that he'd blackout and get into a fight with random people...

Also Darren mentioned that he would love to work with Artie, the only reason he didn't make the Wrestler was because he was too well known of a face...If Robocop happens I wouldn't be surprised if Artie Lange showed up in it...
  • DAMN I gotta see Requiem! It's one of those films I just never got round to seeing yet, and I keep getting damn spoilers by accident. That's it. Renting it today.
  • I saw it, loved it, bought it and haven't stuck it in my DVD players once yet. I just can't bring myself to watching it again...
  • I hear you. I thought it was a great film, and Aronofsky is one of my favorite filmmakers, but one time through Requiem was enough for me. There are images burned in my brain from that movie that I don't think I'll ever get out of my head. It's hard to imagine really wanting to watch that movie multiple times. I think it would just suck all happiness out of my soul.
  • Same here. I just watched it on Sunday. Watch it when you're really, really happy.
  • When the day is just going TOO well and you feel you need to even things out.
  • Actually I'm an international reader and Hulu doesn't allow international streaming. We get a nasty message telling us we're not as cool as people in the U.S. Thanks though!
  • I am also not from the U.S. but this thing works like a charm: http://www.hotspotshield.com/Hulu is pretty great.
  • For anyone who enjoys films, not movies, Requiem is a must. Each time I watch it, I am amazed at the use of sound and soundtrack of all things. For me it is a film that almost ruins anything that doesn't measure up to it.
  • I agree, it's one of those 'modern' films done over the last decade or so that has to be scene. The scene where Harry shows his infected arm to Tyrone still haunts me to this day. Brilliant film-making.
  • jamie
so the DP scene was real?

connely got it stuck in her butt???
  • as far as I know it's a body double
  • Goldfoot
Then why would Jennifer be nervous?
  • It could ruin her image and get her blacklisted from some films. Say a family film
  • Big Tim
It's only DP when it's 2 holes, 1 girl, not 2 girls, 2 holes . Besides, it was ass 2 ass, back 2 back -- but that don't mean that it was inside her ass. It was pussy 2 pussy.
  • THAT scene is pretty crazy. I really enjoyed the whole movie and it's nice to know that they wanted to follow the source material as close as possible. I really hate it when movies are nothing like the books.
  • Dan
Marlon Wayans' name is spelled differently.
  • Man I don't know what the Boyle and Darren Fascination is today, but keep up the good work. When are you guys gonna "get" them for Monday night?
  • Brian Rodden
Nic Cage sucks. He probably didn't even text Darren. It was just a bullshit story.
  • cogezek
It's not double penetration if its not the same time. I realize this may be the wrong forum for this, but I don't think I need to watch it again (really). There was one dildo, and it couldn't be in two orifices at once UNLESS those orifices belonged to two different heroine addicts at either end. One dildo can't be in two places at once unless its in two people at once. Physics.
  • I believe the correct nomenclature is:

    ASS 2 ASS
  • Goldfoot
That doesn't mean the dildo was in either of their asses though.
  • The amount of dildo knowledge displayed is quite worrisome.
  • I prefer Porn Aficionado.
  • Hahaha!!! you are talking to a guy named diggler and goldfoot...very pornish names...
  • It was double ended A to A. I am pretty sure there were two operators at once.
  • Goldfoot
Using the term "double penetration" is deceiving. If I recall correctly, and I think I do because the guy says "ass to ass", it was a double ended dildo, and each girl had half. That isn't double penetration. Double penetration is both holes on one girl.

Also, DP in the article is most likely short for Director of Photography. He says "my DP turned to me...."
  • It is a good thing the part went to Marlon Waynes... I can't imagine a comedian playing in that role. Ah. Ah. Ah.
  • TheMarquis
All DP aside, i love when Darren talks about his movies. you can tell he's serious about what he does.

Also: NIc Cage? He needs to go away for a while, perhaps only to come out for National Treasure sequels (guilty pleasures, i know).
  • WHAT noooooooo Nic Cage needs to be in MORE stuff if you ask me. Or, in a perfect world, every movie for the rest of time. Via clones.
  • Peter needs to watch more porn so he can get the lingo correct.
  • The irony about the whole "ass-to-ass scene being true to the original book" is that that scene in NOT in the book! The book never goes into what Marion did as a prostitute...

Anywho, to Robocop... I'm guessing either he's trying to keep something huge under wraps (some major plot point or major departure from the original series) or he's just not that into it. Robocop never seemed like a good fit to me for Aronofsky... I think he took the job as a "one of us (the studio), one for you" deal in hope of having a REAL budget for his next movie.
  • True story about it not being in the book, which just says she goes somewhere, does something and wants to puke afterwards. But it doesn't say what exactly she had to do.
  • True story about it not being in the book, which just says Marion goes somewhere, does something and wants to puke afterwards. But it doesn't say what exactly she had to do.
  • John Kiggins
Just a quick factual thing about the author. His name is Hubert Selby Jr. - not Shely as you have above.

Aside from that - it's all good.
  • Makes me want to watch Reqium and not just for that scene.
  • Justin Craig
I, for one, don't think we need to waste Aronofsky's talent on Robocop. I saw the Wrestler last night in Hollywood and it was incredible. I think Nick Cage's text to Aronofsky is entirely accurate. That part might as well have been crafted for Rourke. Phenomenal!! I hope Vince McMahon helps push the film into the mainstream so it can turn a sizable profit, however, I won't be surprised if the steroid scenes make him uneasy considering the fact that he's taken a lot of heat for that sort of thing over the past couple of years.
  • Truth be known, McMahon may only want to see "The Wrestler" to get more material for his fed's ongoing JBL/Shawn Michaels storyline.
  • Baby Farts Alot
Man I really hope he does Robocop. Thats by far my most anticipated upcoming film.
  • oooh ass to ass
  • I thought that Requiem for a Dream scene was based off an actual experience by Aronofsky, not based off the book.
  • starscream9289
    Damn, I forgot about RoboCop.
  • I'm a bit curious if Howard asked about the double-penetration scene in a serious way. I always find it a bit disturbing when people bring up that scene and seem to see it in a different light than it's intention. It's an extremely dark scene/series of events that come at the conclusion of the film. Btw, do a lot of people on here subscribe to Sirius?
  • Albert Brodsky
I was wondering the same thing. Here is a scene where the main character has reached such a low point in her life, and having her addiction used against her by the darkest nature of man. I was overcome with sadness while watching it. When I discussed it with different friends they would get all excited like it was the hottest thing they ever watched, usually repeating the line "Ass to ass" with enthusiasm.
  • It just comes to show that sometimes, the second choice is the best choice.
  • ALL BOW DOWN TO NIC CAGE
