Tim Robbins to Play Howard Stark in Iron Man 2?

Well it looks like Terrance Howard isn’t that only Iron Man actor getting the shaft in the Marvel Studios sequel. Latino Review reports a rumor that Gerard Sanders, who played Tony Stark’s father Howard in a montage will not return for Iron Man 2. Instead, Howard Stark will be played by Tim Robbins. Apparently there is a pretty important flashback sequence that among other things, helps set up The Avengers and Captain America films, and director Jon Favreau needed an actor who could pull off the scene.

While not 100% confirmed, this makes perfect sense. Screenwriter Mark Fergus told MTV in September that Tony’s “relationship with his father and this person you only heard about in the first movie is going to be much more fully explored” in the sequel and “in other Marvel movies”. It certainly makes sense to involve Howard Stark in the Super Soldier program.

El Mayimbe also reports that both Hawkeye and Black Widow are part of the story. I’m not sure what to think about the inclusion of other superheroes, but I understand that Marvel needs to transition from a slightly believable premise of Iron Man into a world full of superheroes in The Avengers. Even Robert Downey Jr. made a comment about this recently. I’m guessing that the transition might be a tough one.

  • good choice.
  • Tim Robbins CAN act... I'm intrigued as to how many 'names' are now getting in on this now that it has proven successful. Less is more.

cant wait Marvel really doing well with their characters thanks god they doing their own films instead of letting FOX fucking up their characters i want marvel to do a cool Luke Cage and Black Panther movie
  • They need to really think hard about how to incorporate the Marvel universe. Iron Man worked so well because it was so believable. I believed a technology savvy billionaire could make suit that would give him super-human powers. They are walking a fine line setting up the Avengers, which I am completely for. Just be careful how the set up its.
Also, they need to be careful how much exhibition they give these other heroes, too little and it is confusing for the audience, too much it just turns into a bad thing to watch (which I believe is one of the many problems Spider-man 3 had going against it.)
As far as Tim Robbins, seems like a great pick. I'd like to see him in more films.

first! Tim Robbin is a great actor too bad he doesnt look like a Stark.
  • Is Penny gonna be recasted too? What about Jarvis? Replace him with a mac.
  • tony stark obviously runs linux. he's just that 1337.
  • Why don't they just recast everybody and get it over with! GOD!
  • Is this on the same level as Terrance Howard? I think a fair number of people don't even remember what Stark's father looked like in the photo montage at the beginning of the film. I could be wrong, but I don't see it as that big of a deal. Though, Robbins does not look like he'd be RDJ's father.
  • Right? I don't think appearing in a total of 2 pictures in a montage really constitutes a major role in a movie. I love Robbins; he's awesome. He'll be a great Howard Stark.
  • Yeah, I had to google the Gerard Sanders guy to see if he even looked familiar...Robbins as Tony Stark's father will be cool and the change is def not a big deal...

Hawkeye and Black Widow dont have superpowers so how would it interfere with the reality of the IM universe exactly?
  • Hendo
yea that's exactly what I came into the ocmments section to post. If anything I think the two of them are the perfect segway heroes if Iron Man is eventually going to be rubbing elbows with Thor and trading blows with the hulk... possibly in his Hulkbuster armor? =x
  • you have a point. what the hell is JF going to do?
  • That really is a great point. So far the Hulk is the only one with superpowers and we've already seen that Nick Fury wants him.
  • Obviously this would be awesome. Tim Robbins needs to do a big movie soon. He's earned it.
  • Ok so Tony and Fury are suppose to go and recruit members and Black Widow and Hawkeye help out. They see what the Hulk did a few months ago and try to get him on the Avengers side all the while Captain American is being unthawed and ready to lead them to whatever needs a great team like the avengers to handle. That sounds pretty good to me, what do you guys think?
  • Delta Assault
Gerard Sanders looks much more like Howard Stark then Tim Robbins. This is a travesty.
  • gah
Tim Robbins has already worked with Favreau on Zathura. However, no one saw it.
  • Superpowers or not, the more characters you keep tossing in, the more chance there is for the script to get flooded. I'm wishing them luck, but there is a reason why Iron Man was so successful.
  • Hendo
I agree with gah. It is possible it can get flooded ala Spiderman 3 but remember, there were a lot of appearances in TDK. The key is that we don't know the extent that they will be involved. It could just be a short scene like the Nick Fury scene at the end of Ironman or it could be a short action scene like in the start of TDK with The Scarecrow

Okay, well the Dark Knight had 5 major characters and yet that's widely considered the greatest comic film ever. X-men 2 had like 12. It's all about how you handle it.
  • Yeah, but Weyland has a point. They kept throwing in multiple new characters into the original Batman movies. As a result, the scripts were so flooded with trying to get the villains on screen that they threw out character development or plausibility. Although X-Men (1 and 2) had a lot of characters, you didn't have to explain or deal with origins because the X-Men universe contained mutants. For example, look what happened to Spiderman 3. They threw in 2 new villains, Gwen Stacy, and Brock. They so much time dealing with all the new characters that the movie didn't have time to do much else.

But, that being said. I have faith in Farveau and his team. You can bring in multiple new characters if you do it right, and I think they might be the team to pull it off.
  • i think it works. you see so little of the first howard start that it doesn't make quite as big of an impact as say.... don cheadle for terrence howard
  • Berlin Calling
All this talk of "realism" in superhero movies is ironic and amusing. THEY'RE COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS: Folks are saying the same thing about Nolan's Dark Knight, that no other charaters can be in it now since it's so "real." Baloney. That having been said it seems like continuity is going out the window in IM2. Next thing you know Pepper Potts will be recast.
  • I'd buy it, but I'm still not happy about Cheadle.
