Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett in TR2N

Turistas stars Olivia Wilde (House, The O.C.) and Beau Garrett (Rise of the Silver Surfer, Made of Honor) have been cast in Disney’s Tron sequel TR2N, which is being directed by commercial turned film director Joseph Kosinski. I am worried about Disney’s initial casting announcements. I’m pretty sure that the stars of Turistas are not the stars geeks were hoping for.

According to THR, Garrett will play a siren and Wilde will play a worker in the virtual world who tries to help fight Master Control Program, who you remember from the original film. Jeff Bridges has already signed on to reprise his role from the first film. The male lead has not yet been cast, but the studio is screen-testing actors as we speak.

Kosinski’s tech demo for the film was fashioned into a teaser trailer which was probably the biggest  buzzed about movie of the 2008 San Diego Comic Con.  According to IMDb, the film is the fourth most searched movie of 2008, above such films as Iron Man, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Cloverfield, and Quantum of Solace. So this could be one of their biggest non family movies in years.

Disney hopes to begin shooting in Spring 2009 using 3D cameras, and the studio is eyeing a 2011 release.

Discuss: What do you think about Wilde and Garrett being cast in TR2N?

  • Tron is one of the worst movies ever, so who cares?
  • Goro
They look fine if a bit generic, hawt babe. At least they're actors and not models... or stars from High School Musical. Of course, i speak too soon as the male lead is not yet cast.

Be prepared for a big outrage when some teenybopper dude is cast.
  • Olivia Wilde is the reason I watch House. I also really liked Garrett's small role in FF2.

My family actually is good friends with Wilde (obviously not her real last name) My mom works for her uncle, which is our closest family friend and she has been coming to stay in my town with her uncle since she was about 14. Im really happy to see that she's getting all of these movie parts.
  • Olivia has some acting chops she has yet to show on screen really yet. She was doing awesome work in the Black Donnelly's before that show got canned. To see her progress from high-school plays to the sequel to a movie that everyone told me I was a completely douche for enjoying (yea I was watching it like 20 years after it came out but so what?) is pretty cool.

    Rock on Olivia! PA love!
  • tr2n keeps LOOKIN better
  • iI would like to know why it took so long to make a sequel to Tron.

Tron is a cult classic... Its like if they remade rocky horror picture show. Only people who liked rocky horror picture show would go see it - And I bet half of them wouldn't for sake of being purist.
  • Yeah that is strange. Does the original still have a strong following? Well it might not matter that much. I'm looking forward to it but I had almost forgotten the original.
  • there was a tron first-person-shooter that came out in 2003.

Id be happy if they just copy/pasted the script from the Tron 2.0 video game. I'm just happy its being made... They really can't fuck this one up if they have the right art direction.
  • I'd drink Olivia Wilde's bath water.
  • Haha!!! You got problems man...I mean she does look good, but her bath water? The same water she uses to clean the DIRT off her body???
  • that dirt is so sexy though
  • Ford
I don't think they're so bad. They have a sort of flawless/skinnybitch look that works pretty well for computer people and terminators and stuff, so it should be good. Oh, and you say that it isn't a family release. Let's just wait and see how non-family this is. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they had some kid friendly jarjar binks shit in it.
  • so, as it happens, i very recently watched tron again, in the quest to revisit my shattered youth and i was surprised by how little movie was actually there. the original was simply a set piece designed to show off a bunch of fancy computer effects. really, other than the spectacular (for the time) cgi, there really wasn't much to speak of. and even though the original tron really wasn't much more than a tech demo, somehow, i have the feeling that everyone will be sorely disappointed with the sequel.

wilde was great in conversations with other women

olivia wilde is hot, but the other one looks like a tard

but she has a good pot connection

I can't speak on Garret, as I'm unfamiliar with her work, but I figure I owe Olivia at least some semblance of an argument.
See, I'm an avid "House, M.D." fan, and Season 4 of that show saw a complete re-vamp of the cast, a risky venture to be sure. How, exactly, does a show expect fans to stick around when doing away with half of the original cast? Make damn sure the new cast is pretty fucking great; enter Olivia Wilde.
The first five episodes of Season 4 had upwards of 15+ new doctors vying for the affections of good ol' Gregory House, yet from the first time she offered a diagnosis in 4.1, fans knew she'd be one to watch. Yes, she's gorgeous, exotic, and all that jazz, but her character Thirteen was imbued with a sense of mystery owed entirely to Wilde's efforts.
On paper, Thirteen is nothing more than your standard run-of-the-mill pretty girl doctor that could very easily be seen as Cameron 2.0 (Ed. Note: Cameron was the original female doc on the show). But Wilde's mix of subtlety, nuance and just the right amount of sex appeal and ambition work to elevate 13 to something more than generic TV Doctor Number 4, as seen on so many Network Dramas (Private Practice, ER, Grey's Anatomy...).
So, yeah, no one here is saying "Turistas" was a good movie. But rest assured, Wilde's got the chops to back up her looks. With a movie like "Tron 2" (Fuck Tr2n), the lead's going to need to be believable in her techo-speak, something we've seen go terribly wrong in films past (Thank you Tara Reid). When Wilde starts spouting off god knows what about medicine on "House, M.D." you believe her, and with "Tron 2" credibility in a character's intelligence is going to go a very long way.
  • I'm right there with you, Vincent. House is my favorite show in television. The Season 4 instant cast change was balsy, and was well pulled off. (hell, even Kal Penn is fantastic in the cast)
Anyways, Wilde has proven herself to have talent through House, and believe her to be a good choice. Again, I'm right there with Vincent in not being familiar with Beau Garrett's work. I guess we'll have to wait and see. (although i believe she would look just about the same as Cindy Morgan did in her outfit from the 80's)

So... she just night be a good choice. (visually at least)

  • Does this mean we can finally get Olivia Wilde off of House? Please say it's true.
  • good choice
  • At least it's an actual sequel, not another remake. Still, it pointlessly tugs on the strings of our childhood memories for the sake of a buck.
  • @Peter Sciretta

and these fan favorites you'd like them to cast are? What'd Cameron say about getting "Fan-f***d to death" again?

The one on the right looks perfect for Tron... and I thought the performances in Turistas were way above average for the genre.
  • i'm still excited for this movie. I don't know anything about story so weither these two will make a good impression is still left up in the air.
  • Emm
horrah for olivia wilde. I'm quite a fan, been watching her since OC days, then on to House. I'm looking forward with her in Year One. So one more plus for tron, I haven't seen much of her in "films", just alpha dog, in which it was a very small role.
  • Olivia Wilde's in it, huh?

    Lesbian scene in TR2N: confirmed.
  • I want to go to be in this film... I wish you could get an address to send in a tape for yourself to be in these films. I still need to see the first one. The other week I emailed Criterion saying they should add it to there collection, along with SPACE JAM.
  • They're hot. Soooooo...thats good

    I don't see a problem.
  • I would just like to see a higher calibur actor. I like how Warner Bros cast Terminator Salvation and The Dark Knight, how Marvel cast Iron Man. I'm not saying that Wilde and Garrett don't have acting chops, but they seem like the type that are primarily cast because of their looks and not their talents. Can you imagine the two actresses in the original Tron? I can't.
  • does it really matter? tron was nothing more than a novelty. we're talking about a sequel to a movie that was hardly the caliber of terminator or batman begins. dare i say it, the film is really undeserving of a christian bale or robert downey jr. and until i see a script that proves me wrong, i'm going to continue to be my justified.
  • You make a good point. However I had never heard of Bruce Boxleitner or Cindy Morgan when the first Tron came out (or since really) and I'd never heard of these two until now.

If they announce the casting of a kid that's when I'll start to worry.
