New Moon and Transformers 3 Release Dates?

Dark Horizons is reporting that a July 29th 2011 release date for Transformers 3 has been spotted on German release schedules. While I somehow doubt that a third Transformers film has been greenlit at this point (you never know, they did just greenlight Terminator 5 while in post production), the date is probably a tentative target date. Transformers hit theaters on June 27th 2007, and the sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is scheduled to hit on June 26th 2009, so a 2011 date on the same weekend isn’t out of the question. And Michael Bay has previously said that he is prepared to make Transformers 3, 4 and 5 if the demand still exists. For now, mark this one as rumor

Meanwhile, Summit Entertainment has announced a November 20th 2009 release date for the Twilight sequel New Moon. Also scheduled to hit theaters on the same weekend are Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes, the computer animated film Planet 51, and the Farrelly brothers’ take on The Three Stooges.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or two of those films move quickly from that release. Twilight had a huge impact on the release of Disney’s Bolt. Both Planet 51 and the Three Stooges share the same demographic. The other thing of note is that Summit is basically pushing this film into production as soon as they possibly can so that they can make as much money off the franchise as possible. Lionsgate did the same thing with the SAW franchise, which suffered as a result.

  • The Transformers release date has to be rumor. But a logical one.
  • We have way too many franchises.

I wonder when they'll come out with JUNO 2.
  • I wouldn't say the Saw franchise has suffered, at least not in terms of box office. The second one made $80+ million compared to $50-ish million for the first. Each subsequent entry has made no less than $50 million. The main reason Summit is rushing this into production is that their actors are getting older. And unlike Harry Potter, the franchise doesn't take place over as long a period as the school years at Hogwarts.
  • It is all about the moola. Studios think that they can create a buzz for the movies that are currently released, while also creating feelings of anticipation for the future releases. I am glad that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale want to create a quality film instead of hurrying up and creating another sequel to make a ton of money.
I did enjoy Transformers though. It is just kind of ridiculous to see that there are already rumors of a release date for a third film without having completed the second one...
  • I agree, I think there are too few Christopher Nolan's working in the industry today. Transformers was really enjoyable, but I don't think Michael Bay worries about content.
  • Michael Bay's too worried about the next freeway chase scene.
  • That and America, or being able to blow Michael Bay. That's what his commentary tracks are.
  • Sorry but I have never heard a commentary by Michael Bay, could you be more specific? What does he say?
  • It's a bit funny how full of himself he is on his commentary tracks. I've only heard his Armageddon and Transformers commentary, but each time he talks about how great he is. In Armageddon he talks about the writer and how shitty of a writer he was, how he only agreed to shoot the movie because he felt for him. In both commentary tracks he talks about making the army look really great and how in reality it's run down and lame looking. Give it a listen if you care to hear him stroke his own ego. Though a better story of him can be found on the commentary track to Spaced. Bill Hader talks about meeting Bay and how he was sort of a douche, but that Hader got him good. It's too good for me to short change.
  • I guess I'll have to check that out sometime. Michael Bay does seem like he thinks of himself as a genius. I remember when he didn't want to do the first Transformers movie but Spielberg talked him into it.

oh god... Micheal BAy and more transformers... what is this world coming to?
  • Straightforward assumption on the release date of TF3, given the comparative TF and TF2 release dates two years prior. Sadly New Moon will clearly win the box office race but it will be a mediocre film and begin the downward spiral of the rushed franchise. The final chapter will go straight-to-DVD because know one will give a fuck anymore. That's me hoping, anyway :o)
  • Exactly, in half a year something new will be the "big thing" for the fake angsty teens to sink their over-marketed teeth into.
  • Mark
"Sadly New Moon will clearly win the box office race..."

Now that's very unlikely. Twilight is a big franchise, but not as big as you think, because the targeted demographic is too narrow. Twilight will make about 175 Mio.$ which is huge considering its budget, but it won't win any box office race, especially not against Transformers. I didn't even liked Transformers that much, but the first movie made a staggering 319 Mio.$ (that's more than Pirates of the Caribbean 3!) and everbody expects the sequel to make even more and probably it'll end up as the highest grossing film 2009. Twilight is nowhere near those numbers.
  • mmmm I doubt the 3rd story in the Twilight series will go straight to dvd... sorry CaptainHowdy, you probably have to deal with us a bit longer. The reason I doubt it... I was INCREDIBLY excited for Twilight to be adapted onto the big screen. I followed all of the news, saw all the pictures from the set, etc. Then the movie came out... and it was incredibly dissappointing. Having said that, I am almost jittery with excitement to see how the new director does with New Moon... And I know I'm not the only Twilight fan that feels that way. We will always maintain hope that someone will get one of them right... And can you imagine the kind of money Twilight would have made if they had actually made a GOOD movie??!?!
  • I said 'last chapter' of the film... not the last adaptation of the book. You really think they'll stop when the book does? They'll divvy up the last text into three films, to milk every cent. Then there will be there own prequel. And another sequel... then a reboot.
  • haha
  • Fuck Transformers 3, I wanna see Badboys 3...
  • Hell yeah me too. I wonder if it will ever get made?
  • I'd lurve to see another Bad Boys Bad Boys, whatchya gonna do...?
  • Whatchya gonna do when they come for you?

Sorry about the musical everyone, but Michael Bay needs to stop playing with toys and call Big Willie Style up and make another movie with Gina's man.
  • EddyMovies
What the...they just assigned a director to New Moon. The poor guy has less than a year to make it all happen.
  • Yes what a terrible problem to have. With all due respect, sir. What would you do under such circumstances. Walk away? ...or get a paycheck to hit a bottom line minimum threshold? I don't think the twilight people much care about anything other than gross. But hey these things are like license plates now. You just switch a few key things around and then stamp it out. What?
  • You just said SAW suffered and the pun escaped you. But then again, your not Agee.
  • When you say "franchise" what do you understand it to mean?
  • Simply a series of films. There doesn't have to be consistent quality, talent or money involved, just a series.
  • Joe
Holy God, that's a 363 day turnaround for the entire production of New Moon. It was greenlit November 22nd, I believe. It's going to be an abomination, I promise you that. No good movie can be made, especially one involving werewolves and vampires, in less than a year from start of production to bowing in theaters.

I guess Summit realized that they have a timebomb of a franchise.
  • Nanii
Totally agree there. There's gonna be heaps of CG stuff, what with the morphing and the Volturi's castle and having to make Volterra... Man, to be honest, I wanna see New Moon just to see how crappy it's gonna turn out to be.
  • It's way to early for a Transformers 3 release date. I would understand a little if we saw some footage from part 2 but we've got nothing.
  • Lets not forget what rushing did to the Narnia Franchise as it tried to capitalize off of LOTR. Wait you don't care about the Narnia films? Exactly, the Narnia content was executed poorly. We could be having the same discussion about Transformers 3 in 2 years. That is, if we're still talking at all by then. I don't see it going well between you and I.
  • Yeah I guess you're right, but who actually watched the Narnia films and liked them? I still think its a good idea to bring movies out every year like the matrix franchise and the Pirates franchise. It worked so well for whoever does that.

All I'm saying is we have nothing of part 2 to go on and now they're talking about part 3. If they wanted to release these movies back to back they should have planned ahead for it.

and whats all this about me and you not talking?
  • Err, I agree. I meant New Moon would win its weekend opening against Sherlock, Planet 51 and The 3 Stooges, is all.
  • zlady
oh no!!!! i really hope they don't wreck new moon, but from the sounds of it..it looks lk they will...im so gonna cry..no sarcasm, i wish they'd push the release date to atleast a year n a half...trust me! twilight fans will stilll be TWILIGHT crazy!!!
  • I agree... no need to rush. We are not going to go anywhere... I still get all excited to go see Harry Potter movies and those books came out long before the movies
  • ANOTHER TRANSFORMERS?!?!? When will I kill myself over Shia Labeouf? I see him too damn much and people love him. Grr. (Nothing wrong with Ms. Fox though. She's still gorgeous.)
  • im so excited to watch the twiloght sequel new moon ...
i hope november 20 is really the true release date ...
  • takumi281
damn!!! waiting for the upcoming twilight sequel seems to be a pain in the heart... when will it show up already? my heart's gonna explode now... XD
  • Breelynn
I really hope they do a good job with the Twilight series. I didn't read the book before I watched the movie unfortunately, but I thought the movie was pretty good so I am reading Twilight now. I suppose those who think the movie was a disappointment must have read the book first.
Anyway, at least I will read before watching New Moon so I will have a better idea of whether or not they did a good job converting it to the big screen.
Btw, I'm not a teenager, I'm a 38 yr old mom so I was reluctant to read a young adult novel thinking it would be too 'young' for me to enjoy, but I have to admit, I am really liking it so far and now i have to read all of them. :)
Congrats to Stephenie Meyer on her tremendous success.

I think Dakota Fanning was a wrong choice for the role of Jane....she still looks like a kid. She has a few roles that she just looks out of place. No matter how you dress her up, it doesn't work. She's Disney material.
