I hate to even report this stuff, but the flurry of emails have already begun and the rumor is in flight. E! Online claims that despite what he has said in rumors, Christopher Nolan will “for sure be back” for the third film, and that Rachel Weisz is being considered for the role of Catwoman.

I’m sorry to burst everyone’s bubbles, but I have it on good authority that Nolan has yet to sign on for the third film, nevermind begin developing a story. And without a story, there are no casting talks at Warner Bros. This rumor is bunk.

That said, I think Weisz would be an excellent choice for Catwoman. She’s an actress that has the beauty but also has the acting chops to play in the Nolanverse. And at the same time, she isn’t your typical “Angelina Jolie”-like choice.

Discuss: What would you think of Rachel Weisz as Catwoman?

  • The Cher as Catwoman rumour is still the best.
  • That's the worst. Isn't Cher pushing 60?
  • Agree'd.
  • Ok. As much as I like her... NO CATWOMAN! Just like people going straight to Penguin and The Riddler for the next film. Go with a lesser villain, one with a great story. It worked so well with Scarecrow and Ra'as. The Joker is one of the most famous villains of all time, I'll give you that, but that role would have been nothing without Ledger. Go with a lesser known villain and a B-list actor (like they did with the first film with Cillian Murphy and Liam Neeson)
  • Mark
Liam Neeson is a lesser known actor? Ok, he is not Will Smith but come on. He is pretty well known, has several high-profile awards including an oscar nomination. He was even one of the leads in this movie called Star Wars.
  • he was talking about Cillian being the lesser known actor. we all know Liam's great.
  • Nish
Brian Azzerello's versions of the penguin and riddler in his Joker comic would fit right into the Nolanverse. Although I would really like to see the Killer Croc in the final film. But I guess the main issue with the villan is how will it fit into the story of Batman being hounded by the police.
  • J.D.
I still think Ledger will be back. It was all a ploy to increase ticket sales.
  • Ron
I'm also one of the few who would like to see Croc. Doesn't seem like theres much support for it at all but it could work if done right. Can't go with the Jim Lee version, full on crocodile, but just more of the Croc from his first few appearences back in like 1983-ish.

The whole Batman being hunted by the police I could see Black Mask, Dr.Hugo Strange, Deadshot and yes even Catwoman fitting very nicely into that story. Also remember if Nolan comes back it will more than likely be done right with whomever they choose to use.
  • Goro
Set up BANE. Yeah, Bane was in B&R but as a minor thug role that hardly did justice to him. They have some really excellent territory to go with a Bane storyline.
  • Ron
Hmmm, I always hate it when they say lesser known villians and include Ra's in there. He might not be known to the "regular" movie going public but along with The Joker and Two-Face he is Batman greatest enemy and very VERY well known in comics circles. Of course Scarecrow is as well. Now if they were to use someone Dr.Hugo Strange almost no one except for comics readers would know who the heck is, but I actually think he'd be an inspired pick for the next movie and would fit in very to Nolans Batman world.
  • Dr. Strange is good, but i think he would be better as a supporting actor. They should have introduced him in the first and the second film. That way he could have left that creepy feeling with the audience. " The doctor who works with the Police". Then later have him as a major villain
  • flyboy51
why dont they try the Black Mask?
  • This is a great rumor that Nolan should really consider. Weisz is a great actor.
  • ...great
  • Vick
I think Rachel Weisz would be a great choice for Cat Woman. She's a great actress and she would be a great foil for Christian Bale's Batman.
  • I just have trouble picturing Catwoman in Nolan's Batman world.

But if they're going to do it, using a really good actress would be key.
  • I read on slashfilm.com that Angelina Jolie is possibly in the running! You guys said it not me.

I think Weisz is an OK choice, but honestly I would rather see a character that hasn't been done. I still would watch Depp and Hoffman as the Penguin and Riddler though.
  • im tired of depp and jolie, let someone else have a go
  • jason B
i'm with justin: i can see selina kyle, but not catwoman at all in this take on the bat. i don't know why so many people are clamoring for her, when there are many other people who - themeatically - would fit better. but for the record IF it must be, then yes, weisz would be spectacular. for a white girl, there is something very exotic about her.
  • matthew
While I don't think the plot for the third Nolan movie should revolve around Catwoman, I really think a lot of the tone and themes surrounding the character would be a good fit given how TDK ended. Much how Harvey was the White Knight, and Batman the Dark Knight, Catwoman more or less is the Grey Knight. Her motives always seemed to be a bit unclear, walking that fine line between good and bad. No matter what, a Catwoman in the Nolanverse will be interesting.
  • Ron
Yes Catwoman has always rode that line, one minute you think she one of the goodguys then the next she seems as bad as the next villian. Great foil to Batman when done right
  • Mary
Rachel Weisz is a fantastic actress and a great pick for the role, let's hope there is some truth to the rumor.
  • Travis Faulds
I hear ya, Peter...it's a lose lose situation. You hate to NOT report on it, because even if it's grasping to straws, it's still technically film new. Then it sucks to report it, because it's almost certainly not true whatsoever.

    I feel ya man...you rock.
  • Travis Faulds
    Hahaha, seriously.
  • Jeff W.
God, am I the only one who finds Catwoman to be the least interesting character out of all the Batman villains? Who is clamoring for this?
  • No one is clamoring for this, it's just a rumor. Peter's tired of all the e-mails so he decided to post it to shut everyone up. It's a great choice if it was real. I have to say that they're far more villains in Batman's rogues gallery that are least interesting.
  • although i think catwoman would be the ideal protagonist of the third film i dont see Rachel playing the part, and i especially cant see Jolie playing the part. That being said i couldn't see Ledger as the joker and we all know how that worked out.
  • kentonsam
she's Very hot, and very talented, they should put her in the movie, whether not as catwoman or a new DA, but my pick for the next villain is still Hush and my vote for playing him is still Zachary Quinto.
  • You would have to have so much back story to have Hush be the next villain. You certainly couldn't fit it into a 2 and half hour showing.
  • Ron
Your right, Hush just wouldn't work in a movie. I don't think Bane would either.
  • I think Bane could work plus he really needs some redemption after what Batman & Robin did to him. If anything, he could be a hired hand, a last ditch effort to try to destroy Batman once in for all and almost succeeds breaking Bruce's back in the process. Gotham could start to be more corrupt again and Batman would have to get healthy enough to defeat him and save the city once more. He would be more of a secondary character though.
  • Ron
I just don't feel Bane would work at all unless he was used as a thug, not as much of a mindless one as in B&R but a thug nontheless. Bane wouldn't work as a main villian unless they set up the whole broken bat story line which just wouldn't work in a movie, remember they only have about two and a half hours to tell their story. Deadshot or maybe even Deathstroke works better for what your saying, almost as a hired assasian
  • she'd be good, definitely. don't see what's wrong with the 'typical angelina jolie-type choice' though...
  • Probably the best choice if they decide to go the catwoman route.
  • Actually, Peter, Christopher Nolan recently told the L.A. Times that he's jotted down notes and done some outlining for another Batman movie, but he hasn't come up with anything to base a sequel on.

To borrow a line from The Dark Knight, I think Nolan is keeping his cards close to his chest.
  • Believe me, I've talked to people at Warner Bros, and they are not 100% convinced he is going to return. I'm not saying he isn't. But thats the point we are in the process. There would not be any casting ideas at this point, that is certain
  • thats really crazy they dont even know if he's gonna return.
  • Well, despite your chagrin, why not let the Dark Knight fanatics have their glorified version of Fantasy Baseball by allowing them to spread these rumors? Who knows-- they might actually shape things out for the better.

And by Nolan's admission: obviously, he has another Batman movie on his mind, and he doesn't seem completely against the idea. It just seems like he won't proceed until he has a theme and a story that really excites him.

Overall, I think Nolan is being coy so that he can think on it without any excessive pressure from the studio or fans. He's just playing it smart, just like he should be.
  • Dan P
I find it pretty hilarious that any posting about TDK immediately draws like 100 responses no matter how trivial it is. haha
  • J.D.
I dunno. I spoke with some people at Warner Bros, and they said Tyra Banks was in the running for Catwoman.
  • Ron
I've read that same thing about his comments and while it's not much it's still better than nothing. I love the casting rumors because it's just way to early for that. I doubt we hear any "real" rumors till May or June of 09 at the earliest. Wasn't Ledger signed sometime like July-August of 06, about a year after Batman Begins? Or was that just when the rumors started? Can't really remember.

There's plenty to go around in the next Batman film. So Batman is blamed for the Two-Face killings, and Coleman Reese is still alive which he might again want to blackmail Bruce Wayne. I still don't think Dent is dead and the idea of Catwoman can be played also. The Joker isn't dead, but I'd rather let that character rest with Ledger. Bruce Wayne might have to leave Gotham again.

There's a lot Nolan can play with. Although it won't be as good as "The Dark Knight". If Batman copycats can run around in the Nolan universe so can Catwoman. She could be a character that's effected by Dent's killings? I don't know. Chris, Jon, and David are the masterminds. I can definitely see possibilities. I hope Nolan and company can ground their ideas like "The Dark Knight" and not introduce a silly "drain water supply" idea.
  • brett
Dent is dead. In the script it says something along the lines of "Dent lies on the ground, neck broken."

I highly doubt any of these rumors are true. I also would hate to see Depp as the riddler or Hoffman as penguin. These choices are so typical, it was like after There Will Be Blood everyone wanted to cast Daniel Day Lewis in everything, its the obvious choice. And if theres anything about Nolan, is that he doesn't choose the Obvious Choices.
  • /ambient
I read the script too. I still am unconvinced by the way Nolan and his editor decided to cut and show the scene. Its too ambiguous which is why I think Nolan had a second thoughts about Dent. Only if you read the script will you know Dent broke his neck.
  • Ron
Dent was dead in the script, doesn't mean he's actually dead. The Joker was going to more than likely be back for third movie, at least in some small role at least. So they may use Dent to bridge that gap from movie to movie. It would be awesome because Aaron did an amazing job and would be a shame to waste Two-Face (one of Batmans) greatest villians without using him that much.
  • INS
Jessica Biel, if Catwoman is in the movie

if we're talking preference for the villain in the sequel, give me Mr. Freeze. Can no doubt continue the story line from the Dark Knight and easily re-do the trash can armored Arnold one from Batman & Robin.
  • jessica biel as catwoman is a joke
  • Cat-Lover
I agree. Rachel is exotic and beautiful. I don't understand why people don't like the Catwoman character. She's sexy, and mysterious for Batman. I think Nolan could put a really great spin on her though as he did with Joker, and I thought there was no way that Heath Ledger could pull off the Joker, and he was brilliant. I agree that she is not a powerful villan, because she isn't really a "villian", she's a rogue that goes to the beat of her own drum, but come on, Catwoman is a classic, and I think that Nolan could make the story very very interesting. I trust the writing, those movies were phenomenal.
  • I really hope there is no Catwoman, Penguin or Riddler in the next Batman. We'll see. Not banking on any of these stupid rumors.
