Last week we told you that Chris Weitz was in talks to helm the Twilight sequel New Moon, and that the female director who launched the film series, Catherine Hardwicke had basically been let go by Summit Entertainment.

Well Weitz has since officially signed on to the project, and now Twilight author Stephanie Meyer has posted a message on her official website addressing Hardwicke’s departure and the hire of Weitz:

Like you, I’m sad that Catherine is not continuing on with us for New Moon. I’m going to miss her, not just as a brilliant director, but also as a friend. She has such a distinct, authentic voice that did amazing things for Twilight. I’m looking forward to every movie she does in the future. And she didn’t leave us empty handed. We still get the benefits of her amazing casting and the beautiful visual world she created. This foundation puts us in a good place for New Moon.”

“Summit Films is moving forward with a new director for New Moon. They’ve asked Chris Weitz, director of American Pie, About a Boy, and The Golden Compass, to join us, and I am very pleased to announce that he’s agreed to be a part of our Twilight world. I’ve had the chance to talk to Chris, and I can tell you that he is excited by the story and eager to keep the movie as close to the book as possible. He is also very aware of you, the fans, and wants to keep you all extremely happy. (Torches and pitchforks are not going to be necessary.) I’m excited to work with Chris and I think he brings a lot to the table, not the least of which for me is that he wrote the screenplay for and directed one of my favorite movies of all time, About a Boy. I’m really looking forward to seeing his vision for New Moon.”

Sounds like a bit of fan pr if you ask me. And to top this off, Chris Weitz himself has written a message to the Twilighters. You can read that message after the jump.

  • Dont' care.
  • wow, this website is full of mysogynistic, woman-hating assholes.

you know what? I might just go see Twilight in order to spur many of you assholes. Fucking losers.
  • Maybe you should try getting a sense of humour, eh?
  • Sorry Peter, I didnt read the article. Only got to that picture and goddam Christine Hardwick is ugly!
  • you are such a fucking idiot. Who the fuck cares what Catherine Hardwick looks like? She's a filmmaker, not a model. Fuck off.
  • She is rather handsome thank you very much.
  • Hahaha that's pure gold!
  • miller
That's why her books are just a fantasy life she never had.
  • I didn't read it either but not because of the picture. More because of the title involving the word "Twilight". I stopped there.
  • God, that letter just sounded like pure fellatio to the Twatlight fandom. And not in a respectable sense either- like he just laid himself down on a giant, rusty knife and said "Okay, I'm done."

It's one thing to know your audience, but usually the good film/television storytellers don't set out to just do exactly what the fans want them to. And they end up better off for it.
  • Peter Chen thinks Kristen Stewart is cute but the other ladies are fugly.
  • blah, blah. blah, blah....wow, could they patronize the twitards any more? I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.
New Moon has potential to be a pretty decent flick, but I don't have much hope because I read Summit wants a Nov 09 release. Wow, let's not rush that production schedule too much.
  • Ok, now I read the article and took another daring look at the picture and now I know how Summit made a mistake. They let a twelve year old direct their film.
  • With the new director, the next Twilight movie will end right after they introduce the characters.
  • Wow, I've gotta agree with the whole fan fellatio thing. Summit seems to be very aware of the fact that the success of the film was due almost entirely to the preexisting (and crazy) fanbase. I've never heard of this much fan suck up before.

A proper adaptation should not be a word for word translation of the book. Many things will have to change in order for it become a well made, non crappy movie. I mean, if they were to loose the cheestastic dialogue I might actually go see the sequel. Mass appeal is necessary for the franchise to be succesful. However it's starting to look like they're just going to piggy back the success of the novels rather then commit to actually making a quality movie experience.
  • MRB
    duca,

    I totally agree with you.
  • blomar
god i hope they pick uwe boll for the next film. he's the only one who can do a mormon hot-topic abstinence tale any justice.
  • Looking at Stephanie Meyer only reaffirms my original thought on the twilight series:
Its the unpopular girl's Mary Sue story/wet dream that she wrote on the back of her school folder that had a picture of a horse or something on it.

Also, she's of a faith that says you have to wear special under-roos and that caffeine will get you into hell, I don't want my young impressionable albeit hypothetical teenager daughter to believe her domestic violence, women are ragdolls to be used and put in place, garbage is the way a healthy relationship is.

    /rant.
  • she can fuck off to Hell for all i care
  • Aliya
Wow, judging much? I was beyond popular in high school yet I still thought this movie was sexy in its own right (under-roos and all). True, it's not much of a brain workout, but it still makes for an attractive fantasy world.

Who cares what her faith is? SM could have been a Martian Moon Goddess & it would not have bothered me. Her story is an excellent one and she doesn't push her religion in the books at all. No sense judging what you do not know.

Save your hate speak folks who deserve it. Intolerance is stupid.

SM is being far too nice to the woman who destroyed the Twilight movie. Siyanara harwicke. You suck. At least SM will be seeing all your movies, but I won't .
