McG is Developing Terminator 5

It has already been reported that Terminator Salvation is the first film in a planned trilogy and that Halcyon has a thrill picture option on star Christian Bale to reprise the role of John Connor in the two sequels. Variety reports that development on a Terminator 5 has already begun with direct McG heavily involved in the process (although It wasn’t made completely clear if he has officially signed on for the fifth film just yet).

Halcyon had originally planned to wait until the release of Terminator Salvation before moving on to the next film, but the early reaction from moviegoers, the studio and press has resulted them to greenlight the development early. The current plan is to have Terminator 5 (working title) in theaters for 2011 (presumably Summer). The announcement was made at the Dubai International Film Festival, and while no locations have been picked for the next film, the Middle East was mentioned as a possibility.

  • I'm sorry to say but I've got some bad feelings about Salvation. I don't liked the trailer at all. No large scale war scenes and I don't like the new sunny future. What I do like is the cast with Christian Bale and Anton Yelchin. Those two are what still keeps me interested in the project.
  • Goro
I remember this big budget movie with John Travolta that was to be a mega-franchise and the week before it premiered, the studio (Warner?) greenlit the sequel. Then, after BATTLEFIELD EARTH came out and the reviews and boxoffice came in, that green light turned red awfully fast.
  • The new movie will make a killing. So will the sequels.
  • judging from the trailers and images ive seen this is good news. i hope part 4 leaves us wanting more for a sequel to be granted.
  • judging from the trailers and images ive seen this is good news. i hope part 4 leaves us wanting more for a sequel.
  • Cool this means that T4 won't suck, l can't wait for Salvation...
  • Oh it can still suck! Watch the studio rip the umbilical cord as soon as T4 bombs. It's not greenlit yet, its just in development.
  • I reckon it looks pretty cool!
  • OH no doubt Salvation does LOOK the part. But so did indy4. Catch my drift? My drift being: It can look good and still blow tremendously huge chunks as a film.
  • lol
  • Dr. Acula
Better watch out for scheduling conflicts with Bale and TDK 2... if that happens.
  • Dubai film fest? Dang, they are more progressive than I thought. Wait, anyone can have a film fest these days.
  • I knew I smelt something, and I was worried cause I was sure I got the that piece of crap terminator four trailer off my shoe... Gah is this guy ever going to stop ?
  • Lets hope it gets a better audience than the Terminator show.
  • terminator 4 is my most anticipated movie of 2009 and im glad t5 is already going into production. yay !
  • we haven't even seen Terminator 4 yet!
  • For information on what could possibly go wrong in this equation, see The Golden Compass.
  • I doubt Terminator will put Warner Bros out of business if it fails. That said, I doubt it will fail. Look at Indiana Jones 4 for that equation.
  • marz
actually filming in dubai would be nice. if there ever was a place i wanted to visit before i die, dubai would be second and of course..rio would be first.it's almost like a futuristic world..i mean hell they have their own man made islands! you just dont see dubai in ANY movies so if u had a movie set in the future you could easily use that place and save on having to build a set.i like the terminator franchise so much that i'd prolly see this one even if 4 tanks...but i have faith in it.
  • I think these are very good news, not only for the upcoming Terminator Salvation but also for the whole "new" trilogy coming up. This means that Hollywood will not just use the Terminator franchise to make some money with its name but also with the movie itself. The new trailer shows, that they made up a lot of new ideas and act with more action and brutality. And that is the source of this war, like it was in the first part Terminator 1. I really can't wait till the new Terminator Salvation comes up and hopefully it will be as fascinating as Batman - The Dark Knight. Yeah!!
  • Weyland_Yutani
In the words of the all knowing, Mike Damone - (rule 3)
"...act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great? ....
That's the idea, Rat. That's the attitude.

    Mark Ratner: The attitude?

Mike Damone: Yeah! The attitude dictates that you don't care whether she comes, stays, lays, or prays. I mean whatever happens, your toes are still tappin'. Now when you got that, then you have the attitude.
  • Christian Bale is going all kinds of Hugo Weaving on us with all these trilogies!
  • edc
    lisping raspy voiced optimus?
  • filmkid
nothing wrong with Christian Bale doing all these trilogies he must look these characters plus Hugh Jackman loves Wolverine he will keep on doing it for along time
  • [A]
Summer of 2011, huh? So.. no TDK sequel in 2011--2012 maybe?
  • mark
you make a point, the future should be horrifying !!! Raditation poisoning, starvation
people be hunted and killed. Should be "saving private Ryan with machines " And heres my problem ,what are the machines going to do with Earth , if they terminated us ?!!!
  • Future_man
    T4 looks damn futuristic .. i wonder what will be T5 ..
  • silent echoe
They will make spaceships and conquer the galaxy after using up the earth. I know I'm sounding sarcastic but if you think about it, its all they can do if they conquer earth.
  • carl
the movie suck the only part about that movie is arnold thats the best part
  • Train
Carl, you are a duche. Salvation rocked, and 5 and 6 can only get better.
  • t - 2000
john is alive at the end of the film . marcus tells everyone want to transplant his heart to connor.

In t3 the t - 800 tells kate that john dies in 2032 not in 2018.
  • john
ball shht . its a story that they try to move too long away.its all about money .beacause the story may be modyfied .
  • No more back in time please..
no one wants to see anymore of that.
we want to see more new robots and john connr fighting them or something else.
  • samwise7
It will never happen prob, but I would like to see John Connors sit down and figure out a boss of a plan, then carry it out to perfection. One thing could do is time travel, yeah we've seen enough of that, but time travel back to two days before the time bubble was created. Blow the time bubble off the face of the earth along with the driving force that created the time bubble. Time travel back to the place where they completely defeated skynet, then destroy that last time placement machine. No more Time Travel. The machines can't send Terminator back, and the original John Connors has done what they said in T1, led the resistance to total victory! Let T5 be the great war between machines and mem, and T6 John Connors great plan! T3, the Terminator said he Killed John in the future. T1 John was not killed but he lived. All that time travel to the past changed the future. We need a great plan, one well thought out by none other than John himself. One executed by the resistance to destroy all Terminator machines, and a good ending! Don't leave us hanging!
  • Chris B.
No I didn't see the SCCS, what is the SCCS anyway? We're running out of room to reply, anyway forget about the paradox, your not getting it. If the terminator hadn't gone through they still would have had to send Kyle, no matter what he has to go, he's the father. I will admit in TS I have no idea why they were after Kyle, they shouldn't have been. Skynet should not know or at least has no way of knowing he's John father and yes again, they had Kyle for I don't know how long and why didn't they kill him. It looked like they were trying to put him on a table and then kill him but thats stupid. So yes I agree, they shouldn't have been after kyle and even if they were why be after John, your right thats makes no sense. Just kill Kyle and problem solved for Skynet. Maybe in the next movie they will explain.
So anyway just forget about the paradox just know they have to time travel, it has to be done or John can't be. I know I will never get it through to you that Kyle has to go back and that there is no other father for John. So we'll agree to disagree.
Anyway I hope there is more of the T800 series in the next one and they keep it in the future.
  • Chris B.
I agree, I hope there is no more time traveling in the next movie. We've seen enough of that in the first three. Salvation didn't do so good because it wasn't advertised enough. What we would like to see is the future war like we got a taste of in the first three movies. We want to see lots of terminators fighting lots of humans. Salvation had I think five terminators in it, a handful of HK's (hunters killers) and the rest was drama-oh and the harvister, that was pretty cool. We want to see the war and don't worry if there's allot of cgi-thats good. Look at Transformers-lots of plot holes, tons of cgi and the thing made over 300 mil.-thats got to tell you something. Cgi is not the problem its the plot, now that we've been introduced to the future start destroying and blowing allot of things up. Add tons of quorky humor, drama that keeps your attention and did I mention more terminators? Try not to explain too much, the more you try to explain the lies you have to cover up. Lets be honest there's plenty of room for plot holes in the terminator movies and when you travel in time it changes things, IT DOESN'T STAY THE SAME! And if you try to explain too much you end up with even more plot holes. And for the love of God can some one please explain to me why John in Salvation kept listening to a recording of his mother? Yes she had encountered two terminators but if you watch the movies John ended seeing more Terminators than she did-SHE WASN'T EVEN IN THE 3rd MOVIE PEOPLE! So of course he knows more about them than she does.
I love the Terminator movies including the last one but I seriously hope they don't travel back in time-we want to see the future war, we've already seen the past. The next film should be Skynet's counter attack for the destruction of their base in San Francisco. They should hit the humans hard and introduce the infiltration units (Arnolds Terminator). They should come close to wiping out the human race so in the third movie the humans can come back from the brink and take the victory.
  • robinator
He was listening to the recordings for clues to the future and for any mention of a Terminator with human organs such as Marcus Wright. He sent Kyle Reese back in time, in his future (which he hasnt done yet) so he obviously prepped him as to what to say, warnings and such......there is nothing about this type of machine on the tapes, hence "this isnt the future my mother warned me about". Does this help?
  • Chris B.
True but lets not forget that John Conner has been around more Terminators than his mother-T3. She wasn't even in it and another Terminator came back to protect him. Perhaps he wanted information on Terminators only his mother knew about but then why wouldn't she have told him about it before she passed away. Don't forget they had allot of time after T2 to discuss the Terminators. Point is he knew more about them than she ever did. And no it wasn't the future his mother warned him about but that doesn't mean he should go through old tapes as if he didn't know as much about them as she did. Its going to be interesting to see what John does with Kyle now. He can't just send him on random missions that he doesn't know will succeed cause if he dies then there goes John. Point I'm trying to make is the movie should be more based on the battle, the all out war between man and machines. I've been playing the Terminator Salvation game and to be honest its almost better than the movie. Don't get me wrong I liked the movie, I just think it could have been written better. I'm not sure if there going to make another one now and if they send John back in time there going to lose allot of there fans. Does this clarify?
  • samwise7
What we have to realize is something that John C or his mother either have woke up to the fact of, and that is, in this present story of the Terminator, we are running in an alternate timeline. The old timeline is history and set in stone. The original John C let the Resistance to total victory even to the dis-semblement of Skynet. The Original John C had a different father than the present day John does. You see if there were not an original John C with another dad other than K.R. then he could not have sent K.R. back to 1984. Thus we are running an alternate timeline. Thus in T2 the T1000. In T1 there was no mention of the T1000. That came about after the alternate timeline was started by the T101 and joined by K.R. and Sarah, and ultimantly by John C himself as son of S.C. and K.R. Now when they Time jump from here to there, once again they are starting alternate timelines and anything could happen. The possibilities here are really unlimited. So make all the twists you want, all the timelines you want, but don't leave holes that leave us hanging on the story!
  • Chris B.
Ok, for starters Kyle Reese is the one and only father of John Conner, there was never another father. The terminator movies exist in what is know as a paradox, when the future alters the past. In the first movie John C. was actually captured by the machines and put into the extermination camps and there he met Kyle Reese, who he was probably looking for all along. Kyle was always his father. In T1 there wasn't a T1000 because it hadn't been invented yet and they blew up the lab that sent Kyle and the terminator back in time so the machines had to start all over again and come up with a different plan. Sarah may have known about the terminators from T1 but John didn't. The doctors told him she was nuts and he believed them-this was all explained in T2. In T2 was the first time he was actually exposed personally to a terminator so he had to believe and now the twists in how he meets his father begin. The terminator told John and Sarah to get away from the city and hide. This is why he never got captured-he knew first hand about it. And by the way after he rescues her from the mental ward she could have told him everything he needed to know, he didn't need the tape recorder.
Kyle R. had always been his father and every time a terminator came back yes it changed the way they met but not the fact that he was his father. The possibilities are endless because it's called Hoolywood. Terminator Salvation didn't do good at the box office probably because of lack of advertising or something but if they send John into the past I'm afraid it will be another flop.
Yes make a couple of twists and maybe a turn or two but if you travel in time too many times you will leave holes, then you make the mistake of trying to explain them incorrectly and poeple who know the terminator movies-which ever way you want to twist it- will find the holes.
What would be nice to see in the next one is Skynet striking back hark with the t800 (Arnolds terminator). She how affective it is and show a hard core war between machines and humans. And in case your worried about needing Arnold for that try to remember they made other versions (the terminator that shot at Kyle -Johns only father-in a flash back in T1). Show these terminators doing a number on the resistance. In the last movie we make the come back.
  • samwise7
No you are wrong! Think about it! John Connors did have another father originally! If there was no John Connors, he could not have sent Kile R back. If Kile R did not come back he and Sarah could not have had the present day John! Therefore you cannot get away from the fact that John sent Kile back and therefore in the original, John who was born when? 1985? or so! Before there was a Kile R, and he sent Kile back. Kile was not his father the first time he sent Kile back so Yes! John had another father then!
  • Chris B.
Look up the word paradox and you will find that it has to do with the future changing the past. This only happens with time travel and this is exactly what we are talking about. If Kyle went back through time and had a child with Sarah instead of another man then the events would have changed and John would be a totally different person. John only existed because of Kyle, if he had a different father then why would he be so concerned with the survival of Kyle-BECAUSE THATS HIS ONLY FATHER! To change either of the biological parents is to change the child, you can't have different father same child-think about it! The only reason John even exists is because the machines sent a terminator back in time, in a way creating there own downfall. Hence Kyle goes back in time and creates John.
  • samwise7
I understand and fully appreciate what you folks are saying, and that is so true of the present Timeline. Yet in the original Timeline it's History and set in stone. In the present Timeline, yes John is worried about Kile because of what his mother told him, if you don't send him back you can never be, but that is wrong. If he sends him back there will be a new Timeline with this one going full circle. Now if you think of it, John C. was born before Kile R. was even thought of or born. For John to be born first means he had to have a father and a mother, and they were his original father and Sarah Connors. And as strange as it may seem, with a Paradox setting, there still had to be another father for John C. Or start in T1 and back up. Starting in 1984, where did Kile R come from? Answer is John Connors sent him from 2029. So before Kile R had Sex with Sarah C. and thus John C was conceived, or the present day John C of this timeline. But before Kile came to 1984, John C was! Therefore he had an original father and you can't get away from that. I mean if John C sent him back, there had to be a John C and yeah, he had a different father. Let me Go a little farther here. I am not sure if it was said what age Kile R was when he was sent back, but he left 2029. If he had lived two years after reaching the alternate 1984, it would not have been 1986 for him, it would have been 2031 for him, even though he was spending that time in another time. If he was 22 when he was sent back to 1984, and he lived there 2 years, he would still be24 years old and even though he would be in the time frame of 1986 it would still be 2031 for him. Now the question arises, how many times has it come full circle? or will it come full circle? Unknown by us is my guess.
  • Chris B.
Ok, lets try this again. apparently you have no idea how a paradox really works and I guess the writers of the original terminator didn't know what they were talking about when they wrote the part where Sarah speaks into the tape recorder and says you have to send Kyle back or you'll never be or even the part where, in terminator salvation John Conner himself said kill Kyle Reese, no John Conner, reset the future. You should write them and tell them not to worry about Kyle in the next movie cause it doesn't matter even though they go on about it in every terminator movie.
Now you are right that Kyle was sent back in 2029, ok fine. He goes back to 1984, ok fine. When you go through the time machine it never said you begin to age backwards. Time marches on. Kyle was in his late twenties when he met and helped create John C. It was 1984 and Kyle was 28 lets say. He doesn't change his age because he went through time.
When Kyle traveled in time back to 1984 he traveled back to a time before he was born. If we traveled back to 1890 we would be living in a time before we were born. I know this is kinda rocket scientist stuff but try to keep up.
  • samwise7
Yeah he went to either 1984 before he was born which then became an alternate 1984, or he time jumped to an don't shoot me for saying this but an alternate 2029 with 1984 setting of events. don't scream, we'll go the 1984 lol. Yet when he went, he went from a timeline of 2029 that had already passed a 1984. In that 1984 there were no machines, and none came from the future because they were not invented yet. I say machines but mean Terminators. That was the orginal timeline. That was history. Set in stone. so also in that timeline 2029 was history, or at least the part of it Kile Lived through before being sent back. Now in T.S. where the machines were trying to kill K.R so he couldnt' be sent back in the future, yet that was already history. He had already been sent back or he could not be John's father which we all agree he was John's father of this timeline. Sure Sarah said if you don't send him back you can never be, but was she right? No! The events leading up to T4 had already happened. The T101 had been sent back. K.R. had been sent back. He and Sarah had met, and John had been born to them. All this is history. If John sends Kile back again, This timeline comes full circle, and a new timeline begins. One more comment let me make then I'll wait your comments. a parabox is someone, or something from the future traveling back to the past to change history. For there to be change, there has to be a history that can be changed. That history, which you contend has been changed is what I call the original timeline. It was there! And in that timeline, John Connors had a father who was not Kile R. Of that you cannot disagree, or there was no parabox. :) your turn.
  • Chris B.
Of course I can disagree, thats what our whole argument is about. Look obviously your not getting what I'm saying so try this. Ask five people, friends relatives whatever and see what they say. I'm hoping you ask someone who at least watches movies though and they will tell you what I'm telling you.
The dangers with a paradox is if John doesn't send Kyle back he can never be. Let me say that again, he can never be because Kyle is his father. And no of course Sarah wasn't wrong, they wouldn't have put it in the movie and kept going on about in almost all the movies if she wasn't right.
  • samwise7
Nope, You can't disagree with that part. If there is nothing to change, there is no parabox. Coming from the future to change the past can't be done unless there is a past! Now with that you cannot disagree or else your parabox doesn't exist!
Yes I am getting what you are saying, but I will still ask five people or more.
Now if John doesn't send Kile back, but he has already sent Kile back! That is history! It has already happened!
Parabox = two lines running parellel in a box. Each timeline is simular to the other yet changed to make it a parabox. The only way the machines can survive is in the box. If it goes out of the box they lose. I was because of that pending loss that they started the parabox. So they could survive.
So we (the resistance) have to get it out of the box. To do that, we have to move beyond the send back point.
Yes the movies point in the direction that Kile must be sent back, but that keeps the box alive. It brings it full circle.
Now let's go to your box. I'll play here for a while. So we come to 2029, John Connors gets to the point where the machines sent Arnie back, and we find he was sent to lets say 1962 to kill Sarah shortly after her birth. Yeah the machines show progress by T2 we find a T1000. The events of the past that was changed has changed the future also! Thus we have this is not the future my mother.... So with the machines learning and improving they send him back to 1962 with the mission to kill Sarah back then. What does John do? Ok your turn.
  • Chris B.
Your not getting. This circle thing has got you all wound up the wrong way so lets just try this, ask the five people, or as many as you can find. Do yourself a favor, go to the video store and ask one of the geeks who knows all the movies by heart. Or just any of the guys who knows something about movies, but so yourself a favor and don't ask too loud, then tell me who they thought was Johns father and maybe why, try that ok?
  • samwise7
OK, so you deny that in this story, The Terminator, someone or something from the future came to the past to change history?
  • samwise7
Ok I tried to edit my last post but it wouldn't let me so... Ok friend I asked several people both male and female, but mostly male with several different answers given. One was I don't know. Two said as you that John would just fade out of site, but one of those said Sarah would have a son by a different fellow and name him John so there would be a different John Connors. One said John would disappear but there would be a someone else to lead the resistance to victory. Another answer was he would revert to the original John Connors. I guess you are just going to think the way you do and I shall also think the way I do. So let me be amusive.
    1. Who sent Kile R from the 2029 to 1984? A: ether a Human named John Connors, or a machine called John Connors. If a Human named John Connors sent him back, this human had a mother (Sarah Connors) and a father (unknown) If a machine called John Connors, then the real John Connors had been killed by the machines, and this machine killed the real John Conners and took his place to became the John Connors that sent Kile R back.
That may sound confusing but remember in T4 the machines put out the signal as a decoy. This whole John Connors thing maybe a decoy by the machines. Why would they do that? to keep it in the box so they can survive. If it goes out of the box, they perish. WE will see as this all unravels. Ether way, There was a John Connors who in one timeline led the resistance to total victory over the machines. That spells disastor for the machines. So the machines started the parabox. Out of the parabox, the machines perish. in the parabox, the machines survive.
