Wes Anderson Directs Brad Pitt

Wes Anderson recently directed Brad Pitt in a 30-second television advertisement for Japanese cellphone company Softbank Mobile’s winter 2008 collection. Inspired by Jacques Tati’s 1953 French film “Les Vacances de Monseieur Hulot”, the commercial was shot in a seaside town in France in September.

Pitt has done a bunch of advertising work in Japan, and this isn’t Anderson’s first stint with commercials, as he directed and starred in a wonderful American Express “My Card” ad and did a series of commercials for AT&T in 2007. Like Anderson’s other commercial work, the new advertisement is filmed in one continuous take (or at least filmed to look like one continuous take) and features a bunch of swish pans.

    odd...

Give yourself another thumbs up. Ya gotta level up in this MMO.
  • I love this guy
  • what is the name of the song and artitst?!
  • I usually include that information, but I was unable to figure it out. Maybe someone else will be able to figure it out and post here.
  • The Playlist says it is France Gall - Poupée de cire poupée de son
  • Christopher M
She is the artist who originally sang "Chick Habbit" which Tarantino used in Death Proof....very popular French pop singer
  • Tarantino used the April March version.
  • I am in a study session right now but I cannot WAIT to watch this...
  • He looks ridiculous in that outfit. Put him back in the Inglorious Bastards costume and I'll be happier.

    quirky-

something that is strange/not normal but cool
Wearing long stripy socks that are odd...
  • Wes Anderson's movies cost a lot of money to make, and some of them aren't really that profitable. Why do you think he got Disney to make Life Aqautic, but the Darjaling got like zero distribution. Also Brad Pitt likes to do a lot of his own stuff like all the work with bears that most producers don't give a shit about. Trust me, they can use the money.

he seemed to be trying to hard.
  • i don't like Wes Anderson's work. Somethign about it doesn't connect with me. I've seen almost all his major releases and none of them were very fun movies to me.
  • Enjoyable, short, obvious statement.
  • what a nice little commercial. its crazy that brad pitt is willing to do commercials now since he's an A list actor.
  • Japan has all the cool commercials...All we have is beer and burger virginity commericals...
  • Don't forget Walmart Commericals.
  • Wes has a set style. I'm eagerly awaiting for his new animated flick.
  • Brad Pitt in canary yellow, selling mobile telephones in a foreign country. Outstanding. I don't have a problem with this, those involved get to keep their skills sharp while making some pocket money on the side, and the telecom company gets quality work to promote their product.

By the way, it was 4 shots total. The pan to the left after Pitt notices the hole in the fruit is a wipe to a new shot pushing the car. From then on, it is all one take until the c/u of the camera, then a fourth and final shot for a c/u of the dog toy. The same toys are in the opening shot on the table being sold...

    How is this an event?
  • It always interests me to see celebrities and directors who don't have to do commercials, do them. Pitt and Anderson are big enough names that they can do what they want. It is kind of humanizing.
  • I honestly like Pitts goofier side i.e. Burn After Reading.
  • He does have excellent timing, a great mime of thought, and his sense of vaudeville like caricature, overstatement is fresh and tailored well to fit the pace and manner of this particular shoot. What a performer.
  • I thought I'd like it, but after BAR and this ad it just doesn't seem to... fit him. He was right at home in Se7en and esp. Fight Club. Clooney's in the same boat. I think they'd play great arrogant, rich guys. ;) Anderson seems to be parodying himself more than anything. Still quite enjoyable, better than 97.4% of U.S. commercials.
  • that's such a cool commercial. Wes Anderson is quirky, good, and cool.. I just hope he doesn't turn into a cliche like Tim Burton, though.
  • ben
Maybe if Wes does enough commercials, he'll remember how
    to make good movies.
