Nightmare on Elm Street Reboot Gets The Greenlight

Andrew Form has confirmed to ShockTillYouDrop that Michael Bay’s genre production company Platinum Dunes’ A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot has been officially greenlit by Warner Bros, and will likely start shooting in Spring 2009 in suburban Chicago.

Cape Fear/Arachnophobia screenwriter Wesley Strick penned the script, which producer Bradley Fuller says that it will be a complete reboot taking inspiration from the entire original series, much like the new Friday the 13th film. Freddy Krueger will be recast, but Robert Englund will likely have a cameo. Fuller’s Nightmare pitch actually has me interested: “It’s not Freddy cracking jokes. We want to make a horrifying movie. The concept is so scary, don’t fall asleep or you’ll die.”

I enjoyed Platinum Dunes’ Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake, but have been extremely disappointed with their efforts since. I’m interested to see how Friday the 13th turns out.

  • not surprised at all.

It would be interesting to look at Freddy as a plague, see the damage that he does to the town. He is kinda like a disease after all. It would be nice to get a totally fresh perspective on the story.

    I AGREE MUFFIN!
  • STOP WITH THE 80s REMAKES ALREADY!

My goodness, can't people in Hollywood come up with anything original anymore? Let's get some more creativity in there and start something new instead of rehashing worn-out franchises.
  • They've been working on remaking some of the best 80's flicks. They might as well give the green light on a remake of Breakin'!!!
  • LOL.

I was actually hoping for a remake of Gleaming the Cube, and bring Christian Slater back to reprise his role.
  • What about a remake of Just One Of The Guys? Or Teen Witch!
  • Hey, while were at it, how about remaking all the John Hughes movies! - Sixteen Candles with Miley Cyrus
    - The Breakfast Club with Robert Pattinson as "the rebel"
    - or even Train, Planes, and Automobiles with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as the mis-matched traveling companions

    This is gonna be awesome!
  • Add Short Circuit to the list! Replace Number 5 with CGI, Ally Sheedy with Katheryn Heigel, Steve Guttenberg with Matthew Perry and Fisher Stevens with Kal Penn.
  • With Robert Pattinson it wouldn't be the "The Rebel" anymore...it would be "the BADASS"...
  • I'm waiting for dayglo pants to become fashionable again.
  • fuck the 1980s.
  • tekjock
NO ... Hollywood is out of orginal ideas ... WHEN WILL THERE BE A SHMOO MOVIE GAL DANGIT ... and im sure one of you kids are like WHO TF is Shmoo.
  • B. Larry
"It's not Freddy cracking jokes" Neither was the original. So they really mean this will be a superior sequel to Nightmare on Elm Street IV, I guess.
  • one, two Freddy's coming for you.
  • Looks like fun for sure!
  • josh-freaking-purvis
so remakes are a bad thing? what about batman begins? thats one of the greatest movies of all time (opinion of course) which lead up to the greatest movie of all time (again, opinion) the dark knight.
i understand its not fun for people to see their favorate movie to be remade, but you have to give it a chance cuz there is alot of great remakes. and there IS ALOT of amazing origionol movies coming out. am i the only person that watches movies anymore? aparently
  • Another headline that you just can't believe you're reading, although this one is probably very expected. So long as they keep making money (and they DO make money) Hollywood will keep pissing out these pointless remakes. For the record, I'd just like to say "fuck you, Michael Bay".
  • somebody needs to dick punch that man.
  • Another day, another remake. I'm worried that, especially after TDTESS, nothing is sacred in Hollywood anymore. I can understand this, but I fear a remake of a something like Alien or Back to the Future is coming.
  • oh yeah, believe it, it's gonna happen
  • I had an awesome night last night, and a great weekend planned out. And its all ruined. I'm going to be plagued with this news for days to come. We all knew it was coming, but there was a hope and prayer that the light would never be made green. Not that its acceptible, but, remakes of Ft13 and even Halloween we visually doable because your antagonist wore a mask... Robert Englund's looks and manurisms totally made Krueger what he was. Its one of those roles that can't be replaced.

    - but -

There was an article on Movie-Moron.com stating the following (and makes a decent point)...
"...but is he [Krueger] still scary? Not really. Create a new Freddy, with a new actor and new make up effects and hold back on the reveal, and you could have the first truly terrifying Nightmare in a long time."

Only time will tell, I guess.
I've been an Elm St. fan since the beginning, and will more than likely still check this out upon release. I don't think I'll lose any sleep before that, though. (yes, pun inteneded)
  • i never thought it was that scary, but just entertaining. I dont see the need for a remake. I'd rather see a NEW horror movie franchise.
  • Although I also enjoyed the TCM remake, and anticipate Friday the 13th, those leads are practically mute, faceless villains (no pun intended). It's hard to imagine a remake of this. Robert Englund WAS and IS Freddy... The only thing that really grabs me at this point is that they want to drop the jokes, but can't they just push Englund in the New Nightmare route? He can be intimidating when he wants to be- And that voice! The demon-Freddy in Freddy vs. Jason was awesome ("What's wrong Lori? Miss your wake up call?"). Whatever the case, I hope I can eat my words when this comes out.
  • Michael
    I'm ready for new franchises....
Our generation only gets reboots and unmeant sequels, it's a shame.
  • agreed
  • IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT TO COME UP WITH ORIGINAL IDEAS. NO NEED TO RE-PLAY OLD ONES.
  • DAMN REMAKES TO HELL!
  • Goro
Freddy is a property that they just cannot leave alone. Not surprising since he was and Elm St was such a "great" franchise. I really like the first 2 and then had fun with the next 2. The first were really entries into horror proper, but then they just became any other splatter movie with Freddy as this iconic lead.

Jason v Freddy sorta reboots it. Hell, REALLY, these horror mega-franchises with 10+ sequels are really morphing every time out anyway, so a "reboot"? Who cares. It's just another in the line. Remember the Elm St episode, er, i mean movie sequel, where it's all metafiction and it's about the filming of an Elm St movie?

Yeah, sure, bring it on, but just don't make it like the current crop of Horror Pron like SAW. If they do that, i might go see it.
  • what doesnt get a rebooot nowadays ammirite
  • I'm sick and f**king tired of reboots, but I have to say that Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween impressed me and I'm halfway excited for Friday the 13th...but, still, it's a broken record.
  • yay!!! ANOTHER REBOOT...what will Hollywood think of next???
  • E-$pine
this sounds good but cummon no more slasher remakes. These slasher directors need to concentrate on Freddy vs. Jason 2, its been like 5 years, and it still hasn't cum out, wats takin them so long
  • marz
i agree,,they're taking this reboot thing and running with it.reboot has killed originality...but,if they do go thru witha remake, and this IS a horror flick, maybe they should make it 3D.go the same route as the 'my bloody valentine' remake is going.imagine, you the audience gets to witness first hand what the victim experiences on screen.almost put into their shoes.now THAT might work.i dont know if its because im older or because,if you've seen one 'scary' movie you've seen em all,but i just dont find them scary no more.funny at best but thats it.the only ones i find even remotely scary are japanese to american cross-overs like the grudge and the ring...altho, i am waiting next month for the unborn.
  • STOP STOP STOP REMAKES, HOLLYWOOD!!!!

I would rather see new franchises... like SAW is completey new and invented in the 2000s.
  • classichorrorkid
Why are they remaking all these great classic horror films, why can't they just continue the series instead? it's only a matter of time before they remake Peter Benchley's thriller classic Jaws.

I am not too fond either about them recasting Freddy, Robert Englund is the real Freddy.
  • bob
All you People are dumb! This Movie will be awesome and although i think robert should be in it just shut up and give it a chance ok! I loved the Halloween remake and the Friday the 13th Remake and i know ill like this one
