The Dark Knight Breaks Blu-Ray Sales Record in One Day

If it wasn’t already expected, Nikki Finke is reporting that The Dark Knight has broken the record for the most Blu-rays sold in just one day of release.

The Dark Knight sold over 600,000 copies on Tuesday alone, while the previous record holder, Paramount’s Iron Man, sold 400,000 Blu-ray copies in one week.

And guess how many copies the film sold on old school DVD? Would you believe 3 million? 7 million copies are expect to be sold by weeks end, making it the best selling release of the year. If I were to guestimate, I would say that the release will have made over $175-$200 million by weeks end.

It took Shrek over four weeks to sell 5.5 million copies on DVD in 2001. The bestselling DVD of last year was Transformers, selling 13.74 million units over the span of two and a half months. Pixar’s Finding Nemo remains the best selling DVD of all time with over 60 million units sold as of last year.

Fuck blu ray. This shit is ridiculous, if Warner bros wanted to put the IMAX scenes in the main feature they could have. But no you gotta get that new blu ray shit. HHAHAHAHAh. This is a fucking scam sony and warner are running.
  • i watched this movie about 5 times already since getting it last saturday... living in hong kong does have an advantage that we get dvds/blu-rays slightly faster and our movies open on thursdays... but amazing... the opening bank heist is just amazing in HD

But Blu ray is just a fad there no difference they say!?!?!?!?

I'm getting a PS3, hopefully in the Spring time. Then from that point on, I'll buy Blu-rays for certain movies, and continue on buying DVD for movies that I know won't get a grand Blu-Ray treatment. (Obscure movies, etc)

I mean, a movie like Ferris Bueller's Day Off probably won't look any better on Blu-Ray, so I'll hold off from re-buying some of the movies that I've got on DVD.
  • speaking of stewie, i like how he says cool whip, you know with the added emphasis on the silent H. H for hilarious.

If you look at the Memento 2-disc or the Batman Begins 2 disc dvd you can see that Nolan has made a large special edition. The Dark Knight's special features are next to nothing. They are like watching commercials for the next release.
  • Point taken. I can't argue one way or the other really because I haven't watched my copy of it. I also was just thinking some behind-the-scenes stuff would have been cool to see. Not sure if there's any of that on the discs, feel free to fill me in..
  • So what you're saying is, Chris Nolan now wipes his ass with $100 bills. Gotcha.
  • Sold out at the first two stores I went to yesterday. I wanted to get it on Blu-ray because so much of the movie was shot in IMAX. You can really see the difference in the quality of the image when you see those IMAX shots on your HDTV.
  • I said "It took Shrek over four weeks to sell 5.5 million copies on DVD in 2001." I didn't gve the film's total tally. Pixar's Finding Nemo remains the best selling DVD of all time with over 60 million units sold as of last year.

I'm pretty sure Shrek 1 has sold over 50 million DVDs Worldwide - http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_2...

I assume you're giving the title of best selling DVD of all time for North American sales
  • Color me surprised. Not.

Couldn't have happened to a better movie. Keep breaking those records.
  • Ha record...Wait till Twilight comes out on Blu-Ray...THEN we will truly see history...
  • krs
if history you mean history in the form of worst idea for a movie ever the yes twilight will make history
  • I will happily and confidently wage 2 simoleans in favor of TDK. Twilight's got nothing in comparison. ;)
  • O shit, baller!!!
  • Thats what she said...

At the store I work at we sold all of our 25 copies in like 4 hours, that may not sound like many but for most movies we get like 3-4 copies on blu-ray and do not even sell all of those
  • I still don't have it!

Its that good! I bought the Dark Knight on Blu-ray and DVD yesterday! And I don't have a Blu-ray player! The movie is that good! Then again my first experience was at the midnight IMAX screening and life hasn't been the same since.

I feel bad for the fraction DVD buyers who also bought the 2 disc special edition to discover a really weak set of extras. Its pathetic! It would make batman cry! The features are total filler and teasing us for an inevitable double dip coming soon. If I wasn't for the digital copy and the cool exclusive circuit city or best buy version than I would have stuck with the single disc. Honest.

I'm glad The Dark Knight is making money on DVD, but seriously Warner brothers. Did you really have to make a bare bones special edition release?
  • I understand what you mean, but what extras could they have included? Nolan has said in the past that everything he filmed is in the movie, so there's no deleted scenes. And he's also said that he's against bloopers and things of that sort. I don't really see what else Warner Bros. could have included considering Nolan's stance on everything.

    Dang.
  • Nice time for me not to have a Bluray player :[

  • I bought my BluRay copy from BestBuy yesterday. This is only my second BluRay purchased after Sunshine. I watched it last night next to a raging fire and a snowy outdoors.. it was quite the relaxing experience.
  • its always been cool.

  • Speaking of always being cool, whenever someone says guestimate I am reminded of that Stewie line from Family Guy
  • As expected. Should be receiving my blu-ray copy soon fom Amazon.
  • all those records will be broken by the dark knight. im happy to say i was a part of history by buying my copy yesterday.
  • i have been reading slashfilm for over a year now and this is my first comment. hehe
i never bought bluray or any other movie before but this is the only bluray i am planning to buy
  • joker ftw.
  • that's cool.
