This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. The categories represent solely the author’s intentions towards the DVDs at hand, and are in no way meant to be a reflection on what he thinks other people should rent or buy. So if he ends up putting a movie you like in the “Skip it” section without having seen it, please keep in mind that the time you could spend leaving a spiteful but ultimately futile comment could instead be used for more pleasant things in life. Like buying DVDs.

STEP BROTHERS
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Unrated Edition)
Not a movie to be looked at as anything other than random hilarity, Step Brothers proves that Will Ferrell isn’t out of the game just yet. It also provides John C. Reilly another opportunity to show off what a terrific talent he is, despite repeatedly being rejected by audiences when it comes to box office earnings. If you’re in the mood to laugh and don’t feel like paying attention to pesky annoyances like “plot” and “character development,” then check this one out. Unlike most comedies, it only gets funnier on repeat viewings.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc includes extended scenes, a gag reel, a Line-O-Rama, a making of featurette, and a Boats ‘N Hoes music video. The 2-disc additionally includes Job Interviews, a Music of Step Brothers featurette, and more deleted and extended scenes.

WANTED
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Edition)
Wanted is great fun, but it’s not a film that needs to be watched more than once. It’s held together solely by the badass action sequences; once the thrill of those are lost, all you’re left with is an incredibly stupid screenplay and one goofy sequence after another. Rent it, enjoy it, forget it.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The 2-disc will include 8 featurettes (’Cast and Characters’, ‘Stunts on the L Train’, ‘Special Effects: The Art of the Impossible’, ‘Groundbreaking Visual Effects: From Imagination to Execution’, ‘The Origins of Wanted: Bringing the Graphic Novel to Life’, ‘Through the Eyes of Visionary Director Timur Bekmambetov’), a feature on the making of the video game, Wanted: Motion Comics, a “killer” extended scene, and a digital copy of the film.

THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN
(Available as single-disc and 3-Disc Collector’s Edition)
Is it just me, or has the amount of interest in this latest entry of the Narnia series been shockingly minimal, at least in the US? Other than the occasional comment about how surprisingly violent the film is for a PG family adventure, I can’t recall any real discussion regarding it from fellow film geeks since its release. I was one of the few that was severely disappointed by The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, which made me feel a little left out when everyone kept discussing how great it was. But maybe people have gotten their fill of Narnia, since the sequel grossed less than half the amount of the first one (while costing $20 million more). Regardless, I’m willing to give the series a second chance now that Caspian has hit DVD.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc includes a commentary with director Andrew Adamson and actors. The 3-disc includes that, along with deleted scenes, 7 featurettes, a blooper reel, deleted scenes, interactive games and a digital copy of the film.

THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE
(Available as single-disc and 3-Disc Ultimate X-Phile Edition)
What a stunningly godawful movie. With straight-to-cable production values, a surprisingly lackluster storyline and confusing character developments (Wait, why are Mulder and Scully sleeping in the same bed all of a sudden? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?), there is literally nothing worth praising here. I’m not an X-Files fan by any means, but I actually quite enjoyed the first film. Rest assured, I Want to Believe is a purely pedestrian affair in comparison. Not even recommended for diehard fans, unless they’re truly desperate for another helping of Mulder and Scully and don’t mind the film amounting to nothing more than a really weak episode of the show.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single-disc includes both the theatrical and Unrated Extended Cut of the film, an audio commentary by Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz, featurettes (’Body Parts: Special Make-up Effects’, ‘Chris Carter: Statements on Green Production’), deleted scenes and a gag reel. The 3-disc includes that, plus a feature-length documentary entitled ‘Trust No One: Can The X-Files Remain A Secret?’ and a digital copy of the film.

THE LONGSHOTS
This family-friendly sports comedy/drama is directed by Fred Durst, the lead singer of everyone’s favorite nu metal band Limp Bizkit. How anyone can hear that and think to themselves, “I should see that,” I have no idea. Even ignoring that aspect of the production though, the film looks terribly uninteresting, unoriginal and not the least bit funny. Pass.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Deleted scenes, featurettes (’Jamine Plummer: The Real Longshot’, ‘Making The Longshots’) and interviews with Ice Cube and director Fred Durst.

FLY ME TO THE MOON 3-D
When a CGI family film looks worse than Space Chimps, you know you’re in trouble. The 3-D is obviously the selling point here, but when you’re forced to contend with cheap and ugly animation, cringe-worthy jokes involving burps and farts, and painfully lame characters, something as gimmicky as 3-D is hardly enough to warrant a viewing.
Blu-ray? No.
Notable Extras: A Planetarium Game.

  • DetectiveBunk
Are you sure you don't want to "Bitch-Slap" Chris Carter or do you only like to threaten 64 year men like George Lucas with physical violence??
  • I'm buying Wanted. I'm interested in hearing how they decided to change the comic for the movie. Oh, and i'm a Narnia Apologists.
  • I'll buy Wanted. Easy to switch the brain off and just have that on when the mind is seeking some numb shit like that. Plus Angelina's ass.
  • Hickok
"Wait, why are Mulder and Scully sleeping in the same bed all of a sudden? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?"

They are a couple, why shouldn't they sleep together?
  • I didn't think X-Files was that bad.. Since you're not a fan, I guess that makes sense.. I do agree that the story was pretty anti-climactic, but it was nice seeing the two on a screen together again. And that grizzly adams beard was awesome!!
  • Brent L.
I really enjoyed Prince Caspian, more than I expected I would. And it's not PG-13.
  • Buy Step Brothers? huh rent it for me just getting sick of the same of stick from ferrell..
  • Bill
ignore what has been said about the x-files movie if you are a fan. yes, the story is kind of boring, but the real core of the movie is the mulder/scully dynamic. all the great episodes that weren't mythology were the character driven ones. given all the bad reviews of the movie, I walked out of the theaters pretty satisfied, even though it probably could have been a made for tv movie.
  • Wait a second! When the Longshots came out in theaters, slashfilm gave it great reviews and raved about Fred Durst's directing. I questioned it then. NOW slashfilm is giving it a "skip it".

"This movie might be flying low under the radars is a nice, quick piece of fluff, that knows what to do, when to do it, and when to pack it up. I enjoyed the feel good aspect of the film."

What happened from the time of its theatrical release to its video release?
  • I can't accurately describe how pitiful the adaptation of the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe was. C.S. Lewis is probably still rolling in his grave.

    @ Joe Pekula:
I remember that review, and I'm pretty sure Zach did no such "raving" about Fred Durst's direction.
  • Prince Caspian was actually fantastic, way better than The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. But then so is the book. I'm surprised it didn't catch on with audiences.
  • lpfanaddy
I thought Step Brothers was pretty terrible. Pretty unfunny.
So are there no special features on the single disc version of Wanted?
  • @ Kip_Mooney

    Direct Quote:
"When the screen went to black and only then, did you see the words “Directed by Fred Durst”. This was one of first quality projects to come from the former Nu Metal/Rapper since around 2004. And as much as I expected it to be in rough shape…This movie played like it had veteran direction."

"I haven’t seen Durst’s other work in film, but I am excited and wait with baited breath for what’s to come. He seems to have a good eye for the silver screen and I commend him."

"So I was impressed with the work of all and hope this film gets a little something something for its panache"
  • What happened is one person reviewed it on this site, and another gave his opinion on the DVD release. Two different people, two different opinions. Pretty normal for this site I think. Hunter and Peter give some different opinions on things, and definitely have a different writing style. So from Zach to Adam, you have a difference of opinion.

I agree with Adam on this one though. Anything with Fred Durst attached to it gets an automatic thumbs down from me. I don't care if he won an Oscar for his film, I despise everything about him as a person.
  • Lisa
exactly. if anyone had watched to the end of the series this wouldn't be wierd.
  • Mikey M
X-Files Skip it but Step brothers buy it? You lost your credibility right there.
    Nuff said.
  • ross
Ice Cube's one-sided smirk really annoys the poop out of me for some reason. he's a ghetto snob.
  • Really? Step Brothers is a buy? Sometimes I wonder about you guys. Will Ferell T-Bags and this is a buy?
  • Bull
    "Nuff said"

    You so bad homie.
  • Unfortunately alot of people need things spelled out for them.
  • Metalocalypse Season 2 for me!
  • /filmluvsmangos
"(Wait, why are Mulder and Scully sleeping in the same bed all of a sudden? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?)"

this means they slept with each other. like sex? y'know? mating?
  • Josh
I actually haven't seen the new X-Files movie yet but I greatly appreciate the spoiler warning so i didn't see that they are sleeping in the same bed.
  • Joe
I Want To Believe? More like I Wanted To Leave HYUCK HYUCK HYUCK

I enjoyed Step Brothers, missed Wanted, and might eventually see Caspian for Reepicheep.
  • i don't know about you guys but anything Ice Cube is in is a buy.

i mean XXX: State of the union? FIrst Sunday? Are we done yet?

    classics
  • FOX
LIke it has been said already in this talkback: Mulder and Scully sleeping together is NOT a spoiler! They were clearly a couple at the end of the show's run.
  • eeew gross
  • I'm in love with their genius-wrapped sarcasm. It's chocolate-y and round on the edges.
  • Josh
I wouldn't really call the vague ending to the series a guarantee that they were a couple. I really don't know where you got "clearly" from. Sorry for not using exclamation points and caps in my response.
  • 790
Also out today "Doctor Who" season 4,,,, (hella cool)

X-Files was great btw,,, for those that haven't seen it yet make sure you watch the final credits. There's a real cool scene at the end that true X-Files fans will appreciate.....
  • "their" should have been "your" :
  • ok. I feel comfortable with a full on BURN!
  • Wasn't a huge fan of Step Brothers.. had its moments but as a whole I thought the story was lacking. I do want to see X-Files and Wanted regardless of whether they're good or not.
  • It's been six years since X-Files was on the air. Is it too much to ask for a movie to not just assume the audience knows everything about the show? Especially since the movie introduces the characters as if they haven't been in contact for a very long time, and then suddenly, they're sleeping in the same bed. Am I the only one that felt confused by that?
  • Thanks for the correction. Fixed.
  • I apologize if that potentially spoiled something for you, but it's really not treated like a surprise in the movie at all. They're just randomly sharing the same bed in one scene.
  • Why waste time giving useless exposition? Show them in a bed and most people can put two and two together.
  • I am glad we have made it this far and our love will only grow stronger for it.
  • wrongturn
I have to agree with Adam on this one. Either rent or buy Step Brothers or rent or buy Wanted. I really liked Step Brothers and I would have even bought it, but I've decided to not spend any more cash until TDK comes out next week, but I will ask somebody to pick it up for me as a Christmas present. Also, Wanted was a good film imo, but unfortunately like Adam said it's really only effective that first time around and after that you won't really care about the action sequences that much eventhough they are really cool and badass. It's still worth checking out if you haven't seen it.

As for Narnia 2 and X-Files I saw Narnia 1 and thought it was okay, so I guess if your a Narnia fan check it out 2, but I haven't seen it. As for X - Files I really hated the flick and deffentially wouldn't recommend buying it. If you are a fan of the show (like me) and are even a bit curious at the most rent it first, but I wouldn't spend 20 bucks on it. Sad for me to write this especially since I was a fan of the show since I was 6.

    Peace Out !
  • Mikey M
Have you been living in a cave. Everyone knows from watching the series, unless you didnt that Mulder and Scully are a couple.
  • I think this has been said but yeah, Prince Caspian isn't PG-13. It's PG. I work at Hollywood Video and when I found that out, I was genuinely shocked. So many people get stabbed. And I am ninety percent sure someone gets decapitated. But I'm not positive seeing as I watched it slightly under the influence. Bottom line is: weird fucking rating.
  • burn?
  • Aladdin Sane
Sign me up in the group that likes Prince Caspian way better than The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe. It's a much more interesting film/story and executed much smoother than its predecessor. I'd even go so far as that if it was a decent price down the road, I'll pick it up on BD. Can't say I'll ever give LWW another chance.
  • Christopher M
I just put in the Step Brothers DVD and I was disappointed to hear Will, Adam & John singing the commentary which was awful and hurt my ears......I'm not kidding they sing throughout the whole commentary with the guy who scored the film providing music....It's not worth paying for the 2Disc version...go single disc the extras aren't worth the money..still a funny movie...they could have at least done a serious commentary so we're not forced to listen to tone deaf Will....
