Update: Apparently Dark Horizon’s scooper was inaccurate. George Miller is still officially attached to a Justice League movie (which doesn’t necessarily mean that Warner Bros is going to make one any time soon) and did not appear on a Sydney morning show earlier this week.

While making an appearance on a Sydney morning show, director George Miller has confirmed that he is no longer involved with Warner Bros’ Justice League movie in any capacity. If you remember, Warners had been trying to retool the concept with Miller still at the helm. Well, not anymore. According to Dark Horizons, the Aussie filmmaker said that the studio wants “bigger stars in their superhero movies now.”

Yeah, and I’m sure the online backlash to their Justice League 90210 concept had nothing to do with this big realization? Or maybe it was the success of Marvel’s recent films? Either way, I’m kinda glad that Miller is no longer involved. He’s a great director but I never saw him as the right guy to tackle superhero material.

Discuss: Who should direct a big screen Justice League movie?

  • All have to say is:GITG.

    GITG: Give it to Gilliam.
  • /filmheartsfruit
good. his casting was awful. this movie would cost a bazillion dollars and wouldn't work i think.
  • As far as I'm concerned.. no director has been able to create a truly good superhero movie. Nolan obviously did but he dabbles in 'real' superheros and not ones with powers. Same goes for Favreau. I personally didn't think X2 was the greatest thing but others apparently do which may mean Singer is the most qualified person... but of course he made Superman which I thought was less than great.

So I guess my answer is.. audiences expectations plus most directors inability to understand what the hell to do equals no one yet is qualified.
  • Ok. Then lets give it to David Lynch.
  • Rob
Although I love Miller's movies, I am not lamenting the loss of the Gossip Girls/90210 version of the Justice League. I think if they are going to do it, you need to go with more established actors and go with a more heavier serious theme. You don't want to make a superhero film with the marquee players in the DC Comics' stable and then gear it to 13 year old girls.

The only way I see this movie working is if you have at least Batman and Superman older and their tension between each other already in place. They need the cynical, slightly paranoid Batman to rub against the tightly wound do gooder who you can see could explode at any time Superman. Otherwise, why bother especially if they are going to keep at least element of the rumored script with Batman keeping secret files on all the other Leaguers and a fight between Superman and Batman.
  • Why are they even bothering making these movies? Go TV....Stick with the monthly comic format....Why not do it properly as a "show time/HBO serial?"
  • You're crazy! Putting Gilliam at the helm of a JL movie would guarantee one of two things - it won't get made, or it won't make enough money!
  • For me the problem was never Miller, it was the cast and the story. The studio is trying to save face by letting Miller go and making it seem like JL 90210 was his idea, but I think it was the studio's idea, they hired the writer, and Miller got stuck with the story and WB's casting "suggestions".
  • ScorinLikeaKennedy
    Gilliam? Lynch? What, no Woody?
  • Just wondering, but hasn't WB being planning the freaking JL movie for more than 10 years now?
  • Travis McGee
DC and WB need to focus more attention on individual characters before they jump into a team film...
With that being said, just use the same cast to make a Teen Titans film...
  • Not a Gilliam fan eh?
  • I agree, it would probably be a lot more successful this way - but only in America. They want the rest of the world to cash in on this as well, so cinema screens is the safest bet... usually.
  • By the time they get around to putting this out, the little superhero fad we are currently experiencing will have faded and the film will flop bigger than it is already expected to. It all just sounds like a bad idea.

Don't you wish you could be a studio head for a day?

I agree George Miller probably isn't the guy for this film. If only someone could convince Kevin Smith, get him to cut back on some filthy dialogue, move the camera a little more and hire a sfx adviser... hey, at least he would honor the material accordingly.
  • Justin
    uwe boll lol
  • I don't know if this will ever get made.
  • Eric
Nobody. Nobody should direct a Justice League movie. It is a terrible idea and should be shelved for a good thirty years
  • Hey Capy!

Zack and Miri had some tasty camera work (even though the last shot was basically Clerks II's exact angle and movement). This film should never, ever be made.

I'm a fan of DC, but making a JLA film? at least establish some more characters on celluloid first and not just Supes and The Bat.

I'd rather see a origin Superman story any day than a lame ass team up movie.
  • Kenton Sam
How about not doing a JLA movie clearly WB is not going to ruin the run they have now with Batman, and whats Miller talking about? Big stars in Superhero movies? The world knew very litlle of the existence of Christian Bale before Begins, now he's well known but that doesn't mean he's a big star., Robert Downy? It just seemed obvious that he play a guy with an alcohol problem
  • Just Scrape it Althogether...
  • Just Scrap it Althogether...
  • Well said...
  • YESSS!!! I agree 100% fuck the JL movie...I mean, why the fuck does Superman need a group of OTHER superheroes for help??? He is superman dammit...
  • I actually AM a Gilliam fan :) "Fear and Loathing" rules! But let's face facts, his productions are plagued with curses (*cough*Don Quixote*cough*)and his movies aren't exactly B.O. winners. Plus his style is too quirky for a proper JL movie.

Now a Gilliam-helmed Dr. Strange... THERE's something that has a chance!
  • Sad thing is I do...
  • Chromey
You people are crazy. Miller is perfect for a "super hero" movie. But I guess all those outlandish movies he made that take place in action packed fantasy universes made you think otherwise huh?
  • prophecy_projectz
    Our nightmare continues
  • thefan
"Miller is perfect for a super hero movie" ? You must be intoxicated my friend, he worked on Happy Feet for god sakes. And please don't use Mad Max as a rebuttle, different era, different theme, different time.
  • peter, inaccurate is an understatement. the scooper says miller was on a sydney morning show and confirmed he wasnt attached to the film, but somehow that wasn't right and he was never on the show? so how do you confuse miller being on the show with him not being on the show? and not only that, but if he wasn't on the show, then where does the part about him making that confirmation come from? did the scooper scoop it out of his/her ass or something? thats like me saying that i saw you at a restaurant and you touched me inappropriately, but in the end, that was inaccurate and you were never even there....... but you know you were
  • Scrape this whole thing noone wants this and noone really cares IMO..
  • 790
This Justice League project is turning into the superhero film (Blue Ball) event of a lifetime.....

Hey Miller get a project and fuck off already....
  • Mikey M
If they can make a decent episode on Smallville of JLA, surely they can translate this to the big screen. Get Tom Welling to head up the team. About time he get the Superman title anyway.
  • Who should direct? Brad Fucking Bird that's who.
  • dlb
Brad Bird knows this isn't his kind of style thankfully. I agree, this movie needs to be cooked to perfection or it will fall on its ass.
  • Mikey
    Stop this movie already!
  • This fucking dude has as many heads as a Hydra. JLA needs to bake for a while before being made.

Meaning the characters involved in the original line-up need to have their own films before creating this epic team into one unit. And no to Brad Bird doing this. I don't want this turning into a hokey superhero film. This film needs a set of balls.

Miller just needs to go away.
  • kanezona
I still believe Megan Gale should portray Wonder Woman in both the JLA film as well as the solo film. The same goes for Christian Bale as well as whomever gets recast as Superman. There needs to be continuity between the movies. As for casting big names, not too sure about that. Unknowns like Bale, Carter, Reeves, made the characters more real. People want to see their live-action superheroes not actors portraying their favorite superheroes.
