Big Directors Small Films: George Lucas’ 1:42:08

I forgot to post a Big Directors Small Films column over the weekend due to the Thanksgiving distraction, so here is the make-up edition.

Brandon and the Frog found George Lucas‘ University of Southern California thesis film. 1:42:08: A Man and His Car is short film about a race car driver testing his car. Filmed at California’s Willow Springs Raceway in 1966 with a 14-person student film crew, the short film stars Pete Brock and his yellow Lotus 23 race car, which Jalopnik points out, looks kinda like a XP-34 Landspeeder. Wikipedia claims that the film “is a visual tone poem depicting the graphic beauty of a car going at full speed, and the only sound in it is the roar of the car’s engine.” One thing is for sure, the film features some nice cinematography, especially for a student film from that era.

  • It's really good because Lucas didn't write any dialogue for it.

Kausty that is absolutely Peter Brock the BRE Peter Brock that is. He looks much the same today just older. That guy Lucas made a pretty good film he has a future in this industry

i think Lucas is a great director. and i have no ill will to him cause he gave me Indiana Jones(and star wars).
  • Very interesting. I got the concept of it and it kept me interested all the way to the end.
  • Ed P.
    Nice!

Take into the account that he didn't even direct Empire or Jedi, or any of the Indiana Jones films, then you really have an overrated director. American Graffiti and THX were both enjoyable, but his constant rehashing of the same ideas, characters(Star Wars and Indiana), worlds(Star Wars and Indiana) is painfully boring, especially, when each one continues it's shit-balling downhill.

I grew up on Star Wars and Indiana Jones as much as the next young pup, but it doesn't excuse Mr. Lucas for becoming such a hack. Fuck a Uwe Boll petition, give me a, 'Make George Lucas create something new' and I'll be the first one in line to sign that.

That sure doesn't look like Peter Brock...
  • George before he turned to the dark side.
  • Paul Rittle
Pretty nice. Amazing how simular it is in tone and camera work to Saul Bass' title and race sequences for the 1966 release of the film GRAN PRIX.

I know that Saul was Georges Student advisor at USC.

    HMMMmmmm
  • Kausty

It's true that George Lucas has become a hack, but I can't really stand all of the Lucas bashing. I mean he aggravates me as well, but he has done so much for film, American Graffiti set the precedent for great teen movies , star wars, enough said, he wrote Indiana jones. The man is a genius, no matter how much milk hes squeezed out of them.
  • Dan SOLO!
those opening 10 seconds have more atmosphere than the whole prequel trilogy.
