Scott Frank’s Planet of the Apes Prequel

So what’s going on with the proposed Planet of the Apes sequel/prequel? 20th Century Fox has hired writer/director Scott Frank (The Lookout) to develop a new film based on the Planet of the Apes film property. At first it was rumored that the film would be a remake of Conquest of the Apes or a new film called Genesis: Apes, but according to Chud that is not the case.

The project is going under the working title “Caesar”. Fox’s Tom Rothman says that it is “a kind of prequel story before the first story, with a return to the social thematics that mark the first one, but with an entirely contemporary setting - Earth 2009.” The film won’t have talking monkeys and will not end with chimps taking over Earth. Instead the film will be a hard science fiction film about humans that use science to create hyper-intelligent chimpanzees.

I’m still not convinced that we need another Planet of the Apes reboot at this point. The general public is going to need more time to forget Tim Burton’s remake. And the original films still work. And lets face it, what’s the last good film project developed at Fox? But if you are going to reboot the Apes franchise at this point, Frank’s Caesar sounds like the best possible concept.

  • "a kind of prequel story before the first story"? Fail.

I won't pay to watch this basura-fest but at least it sounds better than the last ideas kicked around.
  • those eyes scare me.
  • As long as this is a stand alone movie exloring interesting ideas, I can see it working. The fact that it can fit into the Planet of the Apes story would be icing on the cake. I kind of like the approach they're taking with this.
  • just please, keep Tim Burton away.

here's an idea..............dont remake, premake, sequel, prequel, triquel, re imagine, over imagine, re think, reboot, preboot, seboot, reshuffle, deshuffle, preshuffle and more aoe films............

and just bury Tim Burton's film and just enjoy the 5 previous Ape films................

Take your stinking paws off me, you damned dirty ape!
  • I'd be interested in seeing it.
  • Oi Vey
I have a theory why Fox and Rothman has such a hard-on for 'Apes': It's the only remaining franchises that Fox still has.

While Fox has X-Men, it's a partnership with Marvel. And George Lucas completely owns Star Wars, so what does Fox have left? Eragon bombed, along with the other family fantasy films that Fox failed to market well.

Rothman has NOTHING, at this point, besides Apes, in which he tried to MILK already with the Burton version. This is a desperate studio looking for a big hit.

Why would anyone want to create hyper-intelligent chimpanzees..? Unless they need butlers..
  • Agreed! Lump this in the ever-growing stupid f*cking ideas basket.
  • This sound like a film that kind of be assumed to be a prequel to Planet. However,
  • This sounds like it could be a Planet prequel. But if there are no talking monkeys at the end of this than it is no Planets film.

The idea of a company such as Fox going for a "hard sci fi" film is very funny. As if.

In any case, perhaps film studios should try leaving things alone and investing in new ideas for a change. The reboot/remake/rehash/flog-to-death "culture" is way out of hand, and frankly depressing. The irony is no entertainment corporation today would go near a POTA, Star Wars, Blade Runner, Indiana Jones, Back to The Future, Terminator, Alien, etc, etc ,etc... if the idea was presented to them.
  • manamana
They're just jealous cause War Monkeys are gonna kick their ass!
  • they should just do a sequel to the last one, picking up where they left off. the world is a mirror world where all humans are replaced by apes. the guy gets all freaked out and the ape fbi takes him in and starts doing experiments, and then they let him go and call him a hairless ape.. all this in the first 15 minutes. followed by an hour and a half of the guy establishing himself in the ape society, complete with funny fat ape friend, sexy female ape for sexual tension, and sweet pretty ape for love interest plot. end with marriage to sweet pretty ape and hybrid offspring, and you've got a great family movie with room for another sequel.
  • Fuck...damn...its like a bad tag line 'Just when you thought it was saf to back into the cinema...' Fox: please greenlight something fucking original goddamnit..leave reboots to studios that can handle it
  • Couldnt agree more...
  • No talking monkeys??? SO WHY CALL IT PLANET OF THE APES??? WTF??? Fuck you bad hollywood remakes...even though I kinda enjoyed Burton's "Planet of the Apes"...
  • The Monkey has beautiful Eyes!

So basically this is not a Planet of the Apes movie. Even less of one than the Burton excrement. If they can't do it right, don't do it at all!
  • K-Bomb
I'd give it a chance. Scott Frank is a brilliant screenwriter. If anyone can make this into a masterpiece, he can.
  • Karizma
I second that, K-bomb. The Lookout is one of my favorite films and a brilliantly written script at that! Oh, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's acting was also brilliant. And this comment I just left is brilliant as well!
  • I like the idea. We've seen so many prequels in the last years.
some of them good, some of them, well ...

but the story of POTA is a perfect basis for a prequel. I am looking forward to the movie.
