Ben Stiller Working on Zoolander Sequel?

I thought that the chance for a Zoolander sequel died when the film failed to gross $46 million domestically. Sure, there is more to the story, the film was released just weeks after 9/11/2001. But that still doesn’t excuse the film’s low bottom line — $45 million isn’t a great take for a $30 million-budgeted PG-13 comedy. Well apparently either Ben Stiller is delusional or Paramount thinks that a sequel could perform better in an era where America turns out in droves for films like Four Christmases.

Ben Stiller tells WENN that he is currently looking at scripts and a deal for a sequel is finally close to being made. But the quote from Stiller included in the story doesn’t seem nearly as confident:

“I’ve been trying to get Zoolander 2 together and we’ve had a few scripts. I feel that is the sequel I really would like to do some day because I like the original and I would make sure it was something new and worthy of it first.”

So I’m not so sure that a sequel is “close to being made” as the story states. I remember being excited to see the 2001 film as it teamed Stiller, Will Farrell and Owen Wilson (who I had, at the time, just discovered in Wes Anderson’s debut film Bottle Rocket). But I don’t remember being terribly disappointed with Zoolander when I finally screened it at my local multiplex. And I’ve never felt that the film has gained a cult following on DVD like many the comedies my friends and I often quote. But maybe I’m wrong…

Discuss: So is there really an interest in a Zoolander sequel? Would you pay to see a Zoolander sequel?

Listen to your friend Billy Zane, he's a cool dude!

Massive following on this film, up there with Anchorman, In fact I'm going to watch this again tonight after reading this!
  • /filmheartscherries
zoolander is really popular. everyone is always shocked when someone is like "i haven't seen zoolander". so we make sure to watch it.
  • Neil
I agree with everyone here, Zoolander is the shit. Timeless piece of work. I know that me and all my friends would be in line to see a sequel. ESPECIALLY if they worked in Luke Wilson, god knows I love Owen but Luke in my mind is one of the most under-appreciated comedic talents in film.
  • Zoolander is a classic. I would gladly see a second one, especially if it has the same cast. I'd like to see Jon Voight and Vince Vaughn have larger parts. And Milla Jovavhich to not be in it at all. Sorry... stick to Resident Evil and Ultraviolet, Milla. Maybe another Andy Dick appearance too. He sucks but his character was so disturbing it was hilarious.

And, I know it is lame, but I say "It's like I'm on crazy pills or something!" at least once a week.
  • Zoolander was funny as shit...bring on the sequel...
  • Andrew Aiello
I recall owen wilson first dropping the bomb on zoolander 2 being in the works like 1.5-2 years ago. Mind you it was just owen but he said ben and will really wanted to do it.
  • I loved Zoolander, but I wouldn't want to see a sequel. No need to strangle the life out of a good joke.
  • admit it, we all quote Zoolander from time to time.
  • DoogleberryWinkler
One of the first massive groups on Facebook was "Derek Zoolander's group for really really ridiculously good looking people"
  • Goya
If this movie had been released within the last four years, when people are now used to idiotically funny comedies that you expect people to quote the hell out of, it would have done very well.

I think a sequel would attract a LOT of people who came to like the film for what it is by watching the DVD in their college dorm rooms repeatedly.
  • the hick
i personally, would most deffintly be going to see zoolander 2, i thought the first one was hilarious and i would imagine this one would gross higher than the first

Love Zoolander. There is definitely a DVD cult following and I think a sequel will easily outperform the original. The problem with the original's marketing was that it looked stupid. Which it was in a way, but is was cleverly stupid. Only that clever aspect never came through in the marketing, so most people, I believe, did not put much faith in the movie. I think too many people are familiar with the original now for that to happen again if a sequel gets made.
  • Futur3
Just because it didn't make much at the box office doesn't really make it a failing movie. I just wrote an entire essay on the power that cult movies have. Even Kevin Smith's movie don't blow the box office up, but he still gets green lit to make more movies due to his cult following and high dvd sales. Remember, Fight Club only made 1/2 what it cost to make domesticallly, but it's one of the most famous movies ever due to the dvd sales and cult following.
  • Hmmm... I would love a sequel but would it rtaint the cult status of the orginal? I would think very much so..
  • nodfromhell
this idea for a zoolander sequel should go up in flames like a gasoline fight. I think the time for a sequel has passed.
  • Credibility shot in

    3...2...1...

I actually enjoyed Zoolander a whole lot. I own it. It makes me laugh, so if we're getting the original cast back together, I'm there. I still think it's one of Ferrell's funnier cinematic moments.
  • clever name
zoolander is probably the best comedy ever
  • BRian
Zoolander Jr. featuring the Jonas Brothers!
  • Sooper
Kirk Lazarus must be in this.

I don't care if they're two seperate movies, Kirk Lazarus must make a cameo.
  • Mugatu
As a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, so must you become Derelicte!
  • robinsey
Note how Scirettta doesnt preface this headline with "Worst movie idea ever"
  • Joe Newman
Zoolander kicks ass bring on the sequel
  • brian
zoolander seems to get funnier every time i see it
  • of course! I think that Zoolander was more popular on dvd than you think Peter. I say this because almost everyone I know finds something in that movie to laugh about.
  • Derek Vinyard
Zoolander 2? Just watch Stiller's performance in Tropic Thunder, it's already been done. What was the last movie he made where he didn't do the Zoolander style mugging for the camera?

Peter didn't say it so I will, "Worst Movie Idea Ever".
  • ha true story
  • are you kidding me peter? Zoolander blew up on DVD. Certainly here in Australia. I work for quickflix (Australian netflix), and its still one of our biggest rentals. Have you met anyone that had never heard of zoolander?
  • I've yet to meet someone who has disliked this film, and frankly, I don't want to meet that person. I remember my brother took me to see it in theaters and I loved it to pieces.
  • I almost pissed myself laughing when I saw this at the movies. Mind you, my wife hated it and I was the only person laughing most of the time. Oh well, Stiller made it for me then.

I also thought Tropic Thunder was a masterpiece of satire...yeah I know....
  • oh, and I would see a zoolander sequel. sure, it wouldn't be The Godfather 4, but I think people need to give Stiller a break. Even if his acting roles have been weak of late (Heartbreak Kid, NATM); his directorial record is solid (Tropic Thunder, Reality Bites, Cable Guy etc)
  • I've yet to meet someone who has disliked this film, and frankly, I don't want to meet that person. I remember my brother took me to see it in theaters and I loved it to pieces.

    Yes, make a sequel.
  • ill probably wait til the sequel goes to TBS to watch it.
  • I LOVE zoolander and i've been waiting for a sequel! seriously one of the funniest movies.

Originally, I disliked Zoolander. I felt it was a moronic, childish, and just plain dumb waste of time.

And then I grew up a little and realized how clever and deeply goofy it was at certain points. It is now one of my favorite random entertainment flicks. An endless source of quotes it seems to power my irrational mind through sillyness alone while still making some well-thought pokes and prods at both the fashion industry, those following it, and the media.

I'd love a sequel, but it would somehow have to one-up David Duchovny's appearance.

"I'm a hand model, mama. A finger jockey. We think differently than the face and body boys... we're a different breed."
  • Joeda L
Definitely my most favorite comedy film. So because of that, I am hesitant to be excited for a sequel. If they can somehow pull it off and make it as good or better than the first, then I'm all for it!
  • Emm
i liked zoolander, not at first but grew on me after randomly seeing it on television over and over. Its just good no brainer entertainment.

i'm sure if the remake is as funny, it has a good chance of making more than the last opening for sure.
    *blue steel*
  • Zoolander was brilliant. I loved it the first time I saw it in the theater. Some of my friends didn't like it but all of them grew to love it after seeing it again. It's entire script is now part of our vernacular.

I'd pay top dollar to see Zoolander 2.
  • Waingro
man the scene with the midget orgy, top shelf comedy.
  • jerry seinfeld
cult hit, peter. get with it.
  • Patrick Ramser
This is probably the best idea ever. I'm not sure why this is even being questioned. Though, than I remember Jim Carrey and Mike Myers failing film careers and realize people, for some reason like to throw Ben Stiller in that bunch despite his huge success.

The day Ben Stiller makes a terrible movie is the day a generation of funny movies dies. I don't think that will ever happen though because Carrey and Myers are just now trying to do dumb, stupid ass, ridiculous movies while Stiller started on those and found success fast. Plus, he's good at them because he adds a bit of social commentary and intelligence, which Carrey and Myers don't realize you need.

Don't even get me started on Sandler.
  • William
I'm pleasantly shocked at how many people love this movie, I thought I was in the minority here.
  • Evan
I've felt like Zoolander has gained a cult following amongst people I know and schoolmates, which is why I was so surprised at the skepticism in this post. I had no idea the film grossed so little, I just assumed it did really well because of its perceived cult following. Anyways, it's a funny movie, so great memorable lines, some ridiculous, but I would appreciate to see a well done sequel. And seeing how Tropic Thunder turned out, I'd say Stiller might actually make a good sequel if given the chance.
  • pangloss
this movie has probably killed it on dvd, it defnitely has a cult following among people i know (20 something college students/graduates). and since when has hollywood sneezed at 15 mil in profit, not counting dvds?
  • Burt Nelson
    Duchovony rules Zoolander...

"I'm a hand model, mama. A finger-jockey. We don't think the same way the face and body boys do. We're a different breed."

    or......

"Lee Harvey Oswald wasn't a model." "But those two lookers on the grassy knoll sure as shit were!"

I haven't seen Zoolander in years and I could rattle off twenty more quotes. I'll take a Mystery Men sequel while he's at it. The first Austin Powers didn't do dick at the box office either.
  • Phil
THIS MOVIE WILL MAKE A SHITLOAD OF CASH IF DONE RIGHT
  • It's that damn Hansel! He's so hot right now!

Second only to Anchorman on my most spun discs list.
  • Derek
    Hell yeah!
Zoolander is one of those films with very solid cult status amongst its fans. I can easily see a well-structured sequel doing good things for the character and his fans!

Whether or not they can keep the humor edgy enough is what I'd be concerned with - its been a long time since the first film, and anyone who has seen the film enough times would probably grow very tired of the normal 'sequel' types of jokes where they're just expanding on jokes in the first film. If it were a completely fresh story with a new villain (could be funny if Zoolander and Mugatu had to team up in the sequel!) and a larger-scale production, I could see it being pretty awesome.
  • This movie will definitely make money. At this point, any studio idiot could see how popular this movie is among 18-30 year olds. Just look it up on Youtube or go to any cable television station that plays movies occasionally. You will see it everywhere in popular culture.
  • Sues
My friends and I certainly quote the movie a lot, and it gets played the hell out of on Comedy Central. I think a Zoolander sequel has more hope than a lot of other sequels that are definitely being made.

And you simply can't beat David Bowie's cameo.
  • Sorry
You're Talking Loco Ese! Zoolander rules!
