Tron 2 Renamed? Possible Plot Information Revealed!

I’m not sure how reliable this intel is right now. We’ve passed along information from the subscription trade magazine Production Weekly in the past is reporting that Disney’s Tron sequel has been renamed from the horrible Tr2n to the even worse TRZ. I have an idea, why don’t you call it… Tron 2? or Tron 2.0 Wow. I’m sure the brand and name probably still has value with today’s movie-going public. I’m pretty sure the little kids aren’t going to think it’s cool because its written in “cool” online abbreviations. Plus, when will companies like Disney realize that when they try to copy a “cool trend”, it always rubs the X-generation as “Dad is trying to talk like his kids in gChat.” There is really no reason for the change, but I digress.

Production Weekly also has a short plot synopsis: “After being transported into the surreal landscape of a mainframe computer to destroy an intruder, a programmer finds himself allied with the leader of a rebellion against a corrupt cyber-entity.” The early test footage/trailer shown at comic con featured Jeff Bridges, reprising his role as a programmer named Flynn from the first film, but possibly with a turn to the dark side. If the new plot synopsis is true, this would mean that Flynn is teaming with a new programmer to defend the system from his former friend Tron.

What do you think? And speaking of that test footage/trailer — when is Disney going to officially release it and name a release date?

  • I dont get it.. What is TRZ?
  • I don't remember the original

They should stick with TR2N. Trz makes me think of tmz. It makes no freakin sense to call the movie that.
  • g2g dud i brb l8ter, going to see TRZ with mai bff, ttyl, dat jeff bridges is soooo dreamy

"Dad’s trying to talk like his kids in gChat" would make for a brilliant slogan.
  • I still can't help myself from thinking....Do we really need a sequel? And will they use modern technology? Why not just name it 7r0n 2 FTW!
  • Andyrooskie
What's the Z mean? I guess it's fine that the title now bears no resemblance to the word "Tron"?

    Makes me think of LXG.
  • The name is part of the marketing and I've heard that the movie plot is not very interesting so far.
  • I don't get TRZ either. And, with the plot, It sounds like it might fall into the territory of Lawnmover Man 2. All effects and no story.

Is this title really any different from the title Tron, in intent though?

Think about it. Back in the early 80's, what would you have thought if you'd heard that Disney were making a new movie about a guy going into a computer, and called it "Tron".

You'd think that “Dad is trying to talk like his kids in gChat.(or the 80's equivilent)”. Tron was nothing more than a "hip, cool buzz word" that evokes a feeling of "elecTRONics" and "computers" and "hacking" and all that crap that was basically cutting edge in the 80's when no one really knew much about computers.

Equate that to now and we have a similarly ridiculous title with similar intent that's trying to be on the cutting edge, but failing simply because it's a film about computers in a world where computers are more common place than anyone could have imagined in the 80's.

I'm not really defending TRZ, a word you can't even pronounce (Turz...tirz...tears...), I'm just giving some perspective here on a film that had a name, I would suggest is almost as bad as TRZ, and yet got such a cult status, along with a sequel 25+ years later.
  • Exactly, who the hell would even think that TRZ would mean Tron. Tr2n at least made some sense.

As for the plot, sounds ok, I just need to go rewatch the original. Last time I saw it I was about 5 and thats like 13 yrs after it already came out.
  • TRZ? Eh? Here they go, bending our childhood memories over the table again. Brace.
  • No No No... We dont need this or infact want it!!!
  • Chromey
The difference is TRON sounds cool. It's got a nice ring to it. TRZ is just gibberish.
  • Goro
They should call it newTron, so that when it bombs....

    heh
  • joshi38
Yes, now that it's almost a household name it does sound cool (and it helps that we can pronounce it).

I'm simply saying, back when people first heard it, a good number of them probably thought it was simply Disney trying to be cool by making a movie with a cool sounding name and literally has no meaning.

TRZ is gibberish though, I'm not too sure what the hell is going on there...

I fretting what I'm going to say when I try to buy my ticket at the cinema "One for Trrrz please".
  • Something tells me this movie is going to have a few production problems.
  • bob
Wouldn't "Tron 2.0" kind of make more sense?
  • Guys, I have to admit, I've never seen the original Tron. (Mostly due to the fact that it came out before I was born). So should I get it from Netflix? The name change sounds kinda lame, even from a non-fan's perspective. I'd prefer "Tron 2" or "Tron 2.0"-- both sound better to me.
  • joshi38
The only plot details we have on the movie is the four lines given to us above, you can't really judge a movie just on that.
  • I do not like the way this movie is being promoted. The marketing most definitively is not very good and the movie seems to be on the same page.
  • DigiDave
Tron was far ahead of it's time. It is worth renting for the sake of it all. I bought the Limited Edition a while ago, simply because it's one of those movies I grew up on. It sort of drags on at the end. But the effects were groundbreaking, and the story still somewhat fresh.
  • DigiDave
I'm guessing TRZ is shortening Tr2N. The Z represents a sideways N, as well as a sort of 2 at the same time. However, it is lame.
I agree with most. Leave this be. No need to do a sequel. It'll bomb like all other 20yr later sequels. It would be like trying to make a fourth Indiana Jones. Oh wait.
  • theuglyspirit
I think it's supposed to be said as "Tronz" but it's just abbreviated as TRZ.

    Still lame though.
  • wtf that is gay
  • The Tick
There was a video game only a few years ago using the name Tron 2.0 it was actually very good but went largely unnoticed, no reason they cant re-use the name unless something changed in the law since then with naming rights.

  • TR2N was absolutely ok with me. Also TRON 2.0 or so would be great. But TRZ? I don't even try to speak this word out... TRZ? OMG
  • Eric
I actually think DigiDave is on to something here. It's a shame that it takes several posts of conjecture to realize how "clever" the title was. Thanks for explaining what was going on in the marketer's minds. It doesn't console me, but at least I'm not quite as mystified.
  • I have a couple of friends in Disney. Sorry for the misunderstanding, I was not basing my comment on what Peter wrote.
  • danno
"Nu-Tron: Da Bomb (Feat. Hot Sauce)."

    Better.
  • joshi38
    Fair enough.
  • sound was good .

Considering the movie isn't even out of pre-production yet, I'd say it's a little early to be judging the quality of the marketing or even the movie itself.
  • ognitinoc
Might be legal problems with the pc game that was called Tron 2.0?
  • goro
    Add a "D":
    TRDZ... yeah, more apropos.
  • I really hope they're paying attention. After reading the comments here and at several other movie sites, I haven't seen one person who thought trz was a good name.

    Tron 2.0 / Tr2n / Tron 2 are all a little divided though.
