Gattaca on Hulu

You can now watch the 1997 science fiction film Gattaca for free on Hulu.com. Critically acclaimed, but a box office dud, you might want to revisit the film on this lazy Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

A smart stylish thriller laced with high-wire suspense. In Gattaca only the strong succeed and the strong are genetically pre-selected at birth. But when one man dares to defy the system he gets caught in a web of lies corruption and murder. The film stars Ethan Hawke, Alan Arkin, Uma Thurman and Jude Law.

Here are a few cool trivia tidbits from IMDb:

  • The Marin County Civic Center was used as the filming location of the Gattaca Corporation. The location was also used in George Lucas’s THX 1138.  The Civic Center was designed by American star architect Frank Lloyd Wright in 1957, and remains the largest Wright design ever constructed.
  • When Gattaca was first released, as part of a marketing campaign there were adverts for people to call up and have their children genetically engineered. Thousands of people called, wanting to have their offspring genetically engineered.
  • The first draft of the screenplay had no title. The film was shot under the working title “The Eighth Day”, a reference to the Biblical creation story, which states that the earth was created in six days and on the seventh day, God rested. The film was originally going to be released with this title but it ended up being contested by a Belgian film, Huitième jour, Le which had already been released in the US as “The Eight Day”.
  • I would watch it right now if I could. Damn teasing me with these Hulu posts!

You realise that each new mention of something released on Hulu is a big F*CK YOU to your international readers, right?
  • Kyle
Just watched it, it was a very good film
  • You realize that 93% of my readers are from the U.S.? So you're saying that I shouldn't point all those readers towards awesome free content so that it won't hurt your feelings? Really?

One of the best movies ever made IMO. I bought this on Blu-ray and it's stunning. Love this film.
  • yes, this movie is highly underrated
  • I frickin' LOVE this movie! One of the most underrated sci-fi films of all time. Jude Law and Ethan Hawke are fantastic. I just picked up the Blu-Ray a few months back - and it's worth it because this looks great in high-def, too. Such a phenomenal film - I hope more people have come to appreciate it - since it was 11 years ago that it first was released.
  • ehwhoknows
I rarely ever comment, but I also wanted to say how awesome this movie, hopefully more people get to watch this now through hulu.
  • For being made 11 years ago, this film still looks absolutely stunning. This is by far one of the favorite DVDs I own. I still don't quite agree with it being marketed as a thriller though.
  • WHAT'S YOUR NUMBA! WHAT'S YOUR NUMBA!!!!!
  • 1 out of a 100. This is how the world has changed.

I've seen this movie a couple time already (before Hulu, of course), and it's always a good watch.
  • The UK needs something like this... Televison channels all have good coverage of they Shows online but we have nothing that you can stream movies thro Legally, that i Know off..
  • Rhys
i love that i found something to for rouhly two hours thanks to slashfilm.
i enjoyed this one a lot and look forward to more hulu releases.
  • What's Your Numba cib3k! WHAT'S YOUR NUMBA!!!
  • This should be required viewing for just about everyone. This movie, like Children of Men, gets everything right. What a bleak future it's going to be. Oh, and by the way, in case you didn't know, genetic engineering is already taking place.
  • I'm very critical in terms of anything that crawls into the "sci-fi" seat. And this film did it beautifully. It was a great change of pace in watching a sci-fi movie that didn't rely on what's been done before. It's odd but I always find this film soothing to watch. Like Dark City.

I love turning people to this film. It almost always comes out positive for whoever watches it for their first time.
  • Great to see quality films streaming/free WITH "permission". Film has lots of praise from /Filmers, that's for sure! Gotta finally watch it now.
  • I think the point is Gattaca, a highly acclaimed film, is streaming -for free- legally. I'm amazed at least. So grab it and watch by any means possible, Hulu or not.
  • While I am not a fan of Hulu, I appreciate when Pete posts about it. Its good to know how far we've come online to be able to watch full movies. Gattaca will always bring a smile to my face of good times of not having to do book work in 7th grade science
  • This is a great movie.

I honestly cannot thank you enough for posting this movie. I remember catching about a 1/2 hour of this on HBO when I was 12. I happened to turn it on during the scene when Jude law was telling off the police officer but once the sex scene came on I changed the channel because my dad walked in haha.

But honestly ever since then I always think about this movie and wondered what the name of it was. I've always wanted to see the entire thing but I never knew the name. I just finished watching it and it was awesome. Thanks so much!
  • great to see this movie, I love this

I love this movie...."Just a tip --- right handed men don't hold it with their left."
  • Whoa, steady on! I'll admit, seeing Hulu posts is a tremendous prick-tease for international viewers (such as myself, in Australia), but you can't blame Peter for posting them! If anything, the big f*ck-you is coming from Hulu itself direct to you... no?
  • I have a hard time getting my friends to watch this movie. Most of the time they read that people say it's boring and are turned off. This Hulu stream has made it a lot easier to get them to watch it. Why hasn't Serenity been put up yet?
  • I'm in Oz and I can watch Hulu....ahhhh Mac's DO rule :)

Peter's posts aren't to blame, the international laws governing copyright protection and broadcast rights are to blame if anything.

Free trade agreements don't mean dick unless the governments involved are willing to give a little here and there.

If you live outside the states and want to watch Hulu, digg a little and you will find the solution to every problem.

Google is your friend. (It's not that great of a film..it rates a meh)

I work for Hulu and I apologize that we cannot stream abroad. It has to do with the agreements we have with the studios.
