YouTube Goes Widescreen

YouTube has announced their transition from a 4:3 aspect ratio video player to a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio player. I knew it was inevitable, but I didn’t expect it to happen this soon. HD programing is becoming the norm, and HD camcorders means that HD user content will also be on the upswing. Here is a clipping from the announcement:

“We’re expanding the width of the page to 960 pixels to better reflect the quality of the videos you create and the screens that you use to watch them. This new, wider player is in a widescreen aspect ratio which we hope will provide you with a cleaner, more powerful viewing experience. And don’t worry, your 4:3 aspect ratio videos will play just fine in this new player.”

4:3 aspect ratio videos will have black bars on the left and the right of the video player.

  • good its an excellent news it is .its great .
want to be great uploaded your video music and picture and get femous quickly
  • This is a great improvement.
  • They support, "High Quality." If Youtube were to support HD like Vimeo, the interent as we know it would crash (exaggeration). Vimeo's community isn't as huge or expansive's as YouTube, and Google probably doesn't have either the man power, or the server power yet to support that. This is just one step closer to achieving that goal though.
  • I think Hulu probably had some leeway into Youtube's sudden change. But it was something they were probably going to do anyway as 16:9 is the new standard.
  • Congrats Youtube. Welcome to 2003!
  • Overdue but glad it's finally here.
  • now if i feel like seeing a bear take a shit, or a zebra sneeze, or a redneck fall off of something, i can see it in all the glory that widescreen can provide.
  • I skipped over to YouTube and watched some Monty Python clips though they're not formatted for the widescreen the quality was good.
  • Finally I can watch Lawrence of Arabia the way it was meant to be seen. In 10 minute , stream quality clips IN WIDESCREEN!
  • Or you could watch it on Hulu :) Do you think Hulu's widescreen player had anything to do with this sudden move? I think it does.
  • YouTube has supported widescreen for almost a year now. As long as you upload your videos wit square pixels, you can just resize the player's embed code to fit whatever aspect ration you shot in. I wrote an article about this for TucsonFilmmaker.com's 'cinemaTECH' section in like January.
  • We're not talking about supporting widescreen, we're talking about the aspect ratio of the video player on youtube.com. It is now 16:9
  • Now I get to see all the stupid little girls attempting to sing/dance/cam whore in high def!
  • Emm
excellent news, i always thought that format was way too small. Less squinting is always a good thing. Hulu is frustrating b/c its only available for the states. so ace for youtube!
  • YAY!
Im not sure if I read it here, I dont think I did, but is youtube going to stream movies like hulu?
I know Ive read it here: http://news.cnet.com/feature-films-coming-to-yout...
And do you know if this is just US, or Australia and others as well?
If this is true, Widescreen, HD and Films!
Youtube is going to waste soo much of my time. =]
  • Yeah, the new size is great. Long overdue as the predecessor was far too small. Found myself actually squinting the odd time.
  • This can only help with the mainstream acceptance of widescreen.

    Thank god.
  • This is crap. What YouTube needs to do is have their video player auto-adjust based on the native aspect ratio of the uploaded video.

Plus... what good is 16:9 aspect ratio when they're still not supporting streaming HD like Vimeo?

Just another reason to not go to YouTube. Not only are the videos terrible quality already, but this just further pushes them to the bottom of the quality charts. When will people learn.
  • ControlMaster
Hulu - You need to think about people outside US.
Hulu dosent stream a single pixel if you (or your IP address) is outside US
