  • I was a kid when the first Battlestar Galcatica aired. I became engrossed immediately. I got the magazines, books and recordings that were offered because I wanted to know more about this interesting space epic that was so different from others offered at the time.

12 colonies of humans destroyed by a reptilian/cybernetic race of aliens. Though these enemies were strong they would not have succeeded in destroying the colonies without the aid of a human traitor named Baltar. A man who sought no less than absolute power over what he thought would be his reward, a surviving colony (his own) which he would rule over as he saw fit. Crazy though he may have been to believe that the Cylons would come through on their promise. He was for the most part sane, albeit psychotic.

What made this series so very interesting, what made it so very different from all sci fi stories that came before, is that Earth was a relative unknown to the survivors, a myth, yet nevertheless it was a myth that might be their best hope for survival.

Everyone watching was very curious to see what would happen when and if they ever found Earth. It was interesting to most viewers that our people, the people of Earth were the last hope of these shattered survivors.

Unfortunately, later on the network aired a separate (short lived) series which followed the descendants of Adama and crew whereby they finally find Earth, an Earth which was, at the time, present day Earth. Okay fair enough, but then they decided to make the Galacticans physically stronger ala the Superman effect as our gravity, sun density, differed substantially from that to which they were accustomed. So much of this ill-fated sequel seemed contrived and poorly written. Cancelation, the best thing for it.

My biggest beef with this new Battlestar Galactica is the cut and paste way in which they "borrowed" from other works, Bladerunner in particular, though aTerminator-like artificial intelligence is definitely at work as well, even James M. Barries, Peter Pan intro line makes an appearance as an explanation for the cyclical way in which events may or may not take place. The original series made a better effort of disengaging the lifestyle and manner of speech of the Galacticans from that of our own. It appears that in this version the one overwhelming difference between these people and us is the liberal use of the word "Frak" which peppers so much of the dialogue.

It seems that the writers, who somehow had the Battlestar Galactica legacy entrusted to them, have done it a grave disservice. It appears that they may have been so influenced by their interests in the plotlines of other movies that they have somehow bonded them together into a resulting Battlestar Galactica that not only doesn't resemble the original series which is fine, but one which has also lost that which made the original unique. It's quest for Earth which, has now culminated in an episode which can be best summed up by the words scrawled on the walls of the ship late in the premiere episode, "Frak Earth!"
Now, we are to believe that Earth has always been populated by Cyclons?? There appears to be a great deal of tortured logic behind this, as the Peter Pan line states "all this has happened before and all this will happen again". Please!  In one fell swoop the writers have taken away our own humanity as well as our sense of kinship with the beleaguered Galacticans.

The artistry and special effects are well done and help to create a convincing canvas on which the storyline can advance, but the special effects artistry alone cannot carry a story through without interesting writing, a fact which is often overlooked these days.

The actors cannot be blamed, though many of them look as though they would be more at ease modeling the latest clothing line in an abercrombie and fitch catalog.  This is not to say that some of them aren't excellent. Edward James Olmos as Adama was an excellent choice, as were many others, the president, Starbuck, Lee. Baltar was miscast though, I think they picked him to be the lovable, bad man that you love to hate.  Good-looking, English-accent, smart, self -interested but still has a heart.  The ambiguous corruptive nature of Baltar is another problem which fails to advance the story in an understandable way.  But this whole Cyclon human variant/replicant, we are our own worst enemy plot is one I hope the industry moves past.

Unfortunately this seems to mean that there will be no meeting of civilizations, theirs and ours. This would have been a tricky story to have written successfully. So by all means, lets just avoid it. lets just throw some hocus pocus, time convaluted nonsensical bull into the mix and let the viewers bewilderment carry them on to the next show, which will come to an end soon anyway. probably with more of whimper than a bang.

the whole meeting of civilizations wouldn't have been a tricky story, it would have been a cheesy story and completely out of touch with the rest of the series. And Baltar's character is probably one of the most interesting on the show. He's a much more human character than the one from the original, who seemed to be simply evil.
They've never stated in the series that this was our earth, only that the 13th tribe settled on a planet and called it earth.
The close resemblance in the culture of the colonies and our own adds to the realism and removes a bit of the absurd, cheesiness of most sci-fi that only results in distancing audiences from the characters.
I have seen the original and the new galactica seems to be an enormous improvement and actually attempts to use this fantastic story to comment on our own society, while the original was mostly just a tacky, weekly space adventure with bad writing and unrealistic characters that was simply trying to make a profit out of being a televised star wars knock-off.

BSC Is truly the best show on tv. I cannot believe it's over. Bummer.
  • scott
awesome, good tv is back but for too short a run.
  • Donkey Punch
    Terrible, terrible show.

I gave up after the first season. What drove me nuts was the show was about a futuristic military but it was painfully obvious that the writers have only seen 4 war movies in their whole lives. Every time anything to do with the military came up they stole from Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, Saving Private Ryan, and Apocalypse Now.

    Break out the cliches!

So many great moments with more to come!!
  • Jebus
Naw man. Pegasus stick Galactica Vs three or four Base Stars. The most balls out combat scene they have ever done.

    Pure win.
  • IMO the most epic scene was when the Galactica jumped into New Caprica's atmosphere.
  • Mr B
Totally psyched. I didn't see a lot of the epic space battles that put this series a step above Lost, but I cannot doubt that the ending will rival probably every scifi show to date.
  • Jebus
    Yes.

I saw the first 3-4 episodes of season 4 then stopped because I got bored/sidetracked. Will watching this spoil too much that I haven't seen yet?
  • StoicRomance
Oh my god. They are going to do it. They are going full balls out. No chintzing around, not pussyfooting. Just. Plain. Epic.

    I cannot wait.

    Also: I love you Starbuck!

BSG has without a doubt, been the greatest ride television has ever had to offer. I'm happy to see an end, yet sad to see it go. Everything about it, including it's various flaws (buncha haters) was amazing. But sometimes you have to roll a hard six.

    So say we all.
  • I just finished re-watching season 3 today. While I am really anxious to see how this ends, I really don't want it to. Other than Sarah Connor Chronicles, which will probably get canceled soon, there really aren't any other decent sci-fi shows.
  • Mikey M
Why are all these people posting here if they have never seen it or don't like it.
    Move on.
  • i never saw this, but it looks like it would satisfy my nerd urges. im going to start watching it now, because it looks pretty awesome.
  • you need to look up the word 'cliche' in the dictionary. thats like saying 'im sick of human beings acting in shows, what a cliche!" war has a certain look to it, what the hell do you expect?
  • Jzbell
    So say we all.
  • Can. Not. Wait. Period.
  • Daniel
finally caught up on the first half of season 4, can't wait for this
  • Close second is Saul's speach in the final Reveal on the last episode on Season Three.
  • What did you want? Lasers? How does "ripping" those off constitute to a terrible show?
  • After BSG, I think I'm going to die inside.
  • I never got into this show.
  • yeah with the Chronicles moving to Friday, it's dead for sure
  • Jon
Perhaps the four best movies to steal off of. Of course, they could have stolen off of Starship Troopers or something like that.
  • Jon
I'm going to have to agree with krackajap. That part is the most rewatched scene on the show for me.
  • I guess I should check this show out at some point in time.
