Warner Bros has publicly begun its push with this Variety advertisement for Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight for a Best Supporting Actor nomination. Academy Award ballots are mailed on December 26th, polls close on January 12th, and the nominations are announced on January 22nd.

Discuss: Should Heath Ledger be nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Academy Award?

He will have to contend with Michael Shannon in Revolutionary Road, Philip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt, John Malkovich in Changeling, Ralph Fiennes in Duchess, John Malkovich and Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading and Robert Downey, Jr. in Tropic Thunder. Will the Academy recognize an outstanding performance in a “comic book movie”?

Personally i think ledger should have been nominated Best Actor no doubt
  • lamont
who cares? there are more important things in the world to worry about. plus he wouldnt pick up the award anyway
  • Here's a list of some nominees that might get....well.....nominated

I definitely think Ledger should be nominated. He delivered one of the most memorable performances of the decade let alone this year.
  • Solid
Maybe he'll win it because he's gone but even if he didn't die, I'd say he earned it.
  • That's pretty interesting. Has there been any other time an actor that has passed away been nominated? I'm trying to think as I usually keep up with the Oscars. Either way considering the lineup there he wouldn't be outmatched. Hoffman was pretty good in Doubt. What a tense flick.
  • Nah, probably not. Good performance, sure, but based on the Academy's precedent of what and who they nominate... putting Heath up there would just be an obvious "he died, let's give it to him".
  • Prat
    agreed.
I hate all these people saying "oh its just because he died".
  • Sean
It would suck to be the actor who beats out Heath Ledger if he gets nominated.

I believe Henry Fonda won a posthumous oscar, ghost. Could be wrong though.
  • uh yea, it would be obvious to say he won it because he died. If he wins, i believe he totally deserves it, whether he was alive or not. At the least he should be nominated.
  • I understand where you are coming from with this, which is why I'm not going to say you're an idiot, because for the most part you are right. A lot of people who went to see The Dark Knight thought it was so awesome because Heath was dead, and all of the reasons created by that. I just saw it recently with a bunch of girls at my college who are obsessing over Twilight, because of Robert P. They're saying it's the best movie ever made, and when I ask them why, all they can say is that he is so hot, so cute, etc. So I understand your reason for saying Ledger's death was the reason TDK did so well.

Now, as far as myself, I remember seeing the Trailer for the movie a few months before Ledger's death, and when I saw the Joker, I couldn't believe that it was Ledger. If you had not known that the Joker was being played by Ledger before hand, would you have figured it out while watching the movie? I cannot be 100% certain that I would, which to me is what makes an actor a great actor. When he can use a change in image, voice, manner, poise, so effectively. That is what makes Ledger's performance so great. I was hyped about this movie from the second I saw the first trailer. Not because of Ledger's death.
  • HahahaHAHahhah
I'm surprised he's not up for best actor, but he'd better at least be nominated. There's no way they'd nominate Robert Downey Jr for Tropic Thunder, nor do I think Brad Pitt deserves it for Burn After Reading (a fun, but not oscar worthy flick).
  • I haven't seen any of the other flicks yet as they have not been released in my area, but I'm backing Heath Ledger on this one. He does at least deserve and attempt to be nominated, since it was a really amazing performance, dead or not.
  • dave rogers
    james dean, twice
  • andrew
yes. he will be nominated. i can feel it.
  • Peter Finch is the only actor to have won an Academy Award after passing away for his role in Network. Wikipedia has a big list of posthumous winners and nominees in all categories: http://tinyurl.com/56zvla
  • Jen
definitely, I think the only competition there is Robert Downey Jr. When have we seen a comic-book movie or a comedy this high up on the list in the academy awards? I think people need to realize that the dark knight was more than just a comic-book movie, it really was like a hardcore drama, a la Heat, but with the superhero element.
  • andrew
heath created an equally over the top jaw dropping cinematic tour de force of a character in the dark knight. it's the same circumstance. if peter finch won one so too can heath ledger. same ballpark.
  • Peter Finch for Network and he won: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002075/ (Great movie btw) I can't remember the other but I know there is at least one more
  • Drat, I posted before seeing this ;)
  • Every one of those competing actors either gave a forgettable performance or were in a forgettable film. The only thing they have going for them that Heath Ledger doesnt is not starring in a comic book movie.
  • Heath Ledger's performance was incredible. He was so in touch with his character that I had to remind myself that it was Ledger on the screen. He was completely The Joker. I don't feel that he will have much competition if he gets the nomination.
  • Matt
I think they should recognize him. TDK is anything but your normal "comic book movie."
  • adrianba
lamont, why do you try to put yourself above everyone? Of course thre're more important things in the world, but you still put a comment, so you're not doing something about it, are you? and that comment was also cruel. If he wins, it's going to be a recogniton for his talent and every actor/actress who deserves it should get recogniton for his/her skills, and ledger showed everyone what a fantastic actor he came to be
  • Pete
That picture they used of Ledger in the ad looks so fitting.
He is taking off the mask and bowing as if he is saying "farewell" to an audience during the curtain call of his final performance.
  • Eric_B
There is still Brad Pitt for Benjamin Button and Robert Downey for next years Soloist.
  • Mark
He will be nominated and he will win and his death will be no less tragic for it.
  • If RDJ and Pitt and Mal can be in the running, I don't see why Heath shouldn't be. Dead or alive he brought at least as good of a performance as them. Whether he deserves the win I can not say. I really don't think he should be cut any slack just because he has passed though.
  • How is Robert competition? If you mean for The Soloist, that's next year. I'm thinking about maybe Leo in Revolutionary Road (I saw it at a test screening. Believe me, it's great acting) and Mickey Rourke for Wrestler.
  • GregoryV
Should this even be a question? Of course Ledger should be nominated!
  • MY nominations

    1. Heath Ledger
    2. Mickey Rourke
    3. Brad Pitt (Bejamin Button)
    4. Leo (Revolutionary Road)
    5. Benico Del Toro (Che)
    OR
    5. Sean Penn (Milk)
    OR
5.Josh Brolin (W. or Milk as supporting actor)

I've only seen like 2 of the 7 i picked. The other 5 haven't come out yet. ANYWAY I just think these should be NOMINATED
  • Heathfan
Heath should absolutely be nominated. He made that movie. He was absolutely phenomonel as the Joker. It is just sad he wasn't here to see how much people loved his portrayal. RIP Heath
  • 100% Heath should be nominated, it was a stellar performance. Let's all not forget that there was a HUGE Heath backlash when it was announced he would be the Joker. People everywhere were so pissed and couldn't believe it. I on the other hand believed in him after seeing his performance in Lords of Dogtown (2005) and I had no idea it was him as the manager the whole film!

I think Dark Knight is doing Supporting Actor to ease the pressure FTW.

But I also think the Which Doctor in Australia should be nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
  • I definitely think he should be given a nomination, and not because he died. He gave an amazing performance and completely changed the joker and put such a high bar on playing it that it probably won't be tested for at least 20 years. I really hope they don't nominate him because it was JUST a superhero movie. Artistic movie or not, Ledger still gave one of the most memorable performances of the summer.
  • There's been a few wins posthumously and a few more nominations...
  • He honestly should be up for Best Actor. The Dark Knight was more about The Joker than it was about The Batman.
  • I hope he wins, he was EXCELLENT.
But I'd rather have Robert Downey Jr. win, because its just so stupid.
A guy being racist, by being the 'Dude playing the dude that’s disguised as another dude!'
Cuz i mean COME ON! HE WAS FANTASTIC!
  • Yeah, that'd be for Best Actor though, not supporting
  • freemachine
It's apparent that people STILL can't handle the truth: Heath Ledger committed suicide. Why you guys find that endearing I just don't understand. A bigger tragedy would be if Hollywood nominates for an Oscar just because he's dead. TDK was great, but not the best. The same can be said for Ledger's performance: great, but not the best.

Oh, and what's with people making their nomination lists and including performances that they haven't even seen yet (i.e. Pitt, Rourke)? Apparently people just jump on board what ever popularity contest is the most trendy, which is exactly why Ledger will probably get the Oscar.
  • Joe
It's crazy to think he won't, at least, be nominated.

Now, winning is a different question.
  • Zach
I know that I am going to get a ton of hate for this, and before I say it let me just say... that I did truly enjoy this movie, and thought that Heath Ledger was very good as the Joker...not OMG BEST ACTOR EVER, but he gave a solid performance...That being said, the only reason all of these people on the internet are suggesting Heath Ledger for best supporting actor, or even just best actor, and the only reason that the movie did so well, and had as much buzz as it did...is because the man died. That the ONLY reason...we he still alive there would be ZERO talk of Oscars...and while the movie would have still been a strong success (on it's sheer greatness alone) all of this sracy hype and buzz would not STILL be lurking around it.
  • I know what you are getting at, and to a point I agree. There is and was mucho hype because of his death. On a performance basis alone though, he recreated a character, and gave a truly great performance. If I thought it was bad or lacking, I would say so dead or alive. His performance was in the league of those being nominated, so its only fair that he get thrown in. Whether he should win or not is something completely different. On a side note, with or without Heath, TDK was going to great at the box office and on dvd for the sheer fact that Begins was pretty good.....and its Batman. So to make it seem like everyone is "LIKE OGM!" because he is dead is just bollocks.
  • Thrillhouse77
There was talk of Oscar noms BEFORE he died. I agree with you, sir, that the hype of his death amplified the effect.

But there WERE Oscar talks. I would say that saying there would be ZERO chance before his death would be unfair.
  • brian
umm no. he began getting all the publicity and rave after the trailer and opening scene came out in front of I Am Legend. and to be fair even his voice in the teaser was getting much positive attention. saying his death promoted the level publicity...fine...but the rave reviews, absolutely not.
  • Zera
Why are so many of you confusing lead actor with supporting actor? Brad Pitt would be the lead for Benjamin Button. Mickey would be the lead for The Wrestler. I haven't seen Doubt yet, but PSH gave me the impression that he would be a lead in the trailer I saw, though it was a while ago and I don't remember it much.
  • He better get nominate...I don't think TDK woulda went over 500million without him....
  • Thrillhouse77
Thank you! Leo and Mickey are NOT Ledger's competition. Ledger doesn't have much competition at all. He should rightfully walk away with this award.
  • Thrillhouse77
Wow. And I obviously meant "walk away" as a figure of speech. Yikes. Insert foot in mouth.
  • Travis
Ledger's portrayal of The Joker is in a league who's only other member is Anthony Hopkins's Hannibal Lecter. It is not only the most performance of this year, but one of the greatest of all time. For him not to would will be an upset, for him not to be nominated would be a disgrace.
  • As much as I liked Ledger's performance I believe RDJ deserves it. Robert put his career on the line, remember what happened to the guy in Soul Man? Ledger did a great job with the Joker no doubt but at the end of the Day RDJ was better imo.

TDK for Best Picture though, I'd support that all the way.
