Update: The artist now claims that these concept photos are his own personal designs and were not created for James Cameron’s Avatar.

I’m Jonay Bacallado, the author of the images. They are part of my artwork, my personal artwork, and it has nothing to do with the actual concept art of the film. The interview will be removed from www.plansiete.com as well, I’ve spoken aboput his incident with responsibles of the program, becuase information it’s not accurate, and things can be misunderstood. Please, I have to ask you to remove this information, because the images shown are part of my own portfolio, no one has asked for authorisation, and of course, and most importantly, those designs have nothing to do with the real concepts and designs. I spoke during the interview about my experience, images were taken from my website, and they asume they are real concept art, but is not. The editing odf the video is quite confussing and may lead people to think it’s the real concept art done, but it’s not!!! Just to emphasise what I’m trying to explain mention that the design of characters have been done by another team, and we only get invlolved in costume, and as I said before, Avatar is far from this personal creation of mine included in my portfolio. This would get me into trouble, and without a reason, because this is NOT AVATAR CONCEPT ART. So please, people who follows Avatar news deserve to know that this concepts are FAKES, they are my creation, but have nothing to do with the work done in pre-production. Thank you, Jonay Bacallado.

Jonay Bacallado Martin
Illustrator/Concept Artist

MarketSaw got their hands on a bunch of concept art for the Na’vi in James Cameron’s upcoming 3D sci-fi epic Avatar. The designs above and below were created by concept artist Jonay Bacallado.

The film tells the story of a paraplegic war veteran named Jake, who is summoned to a planet in order to help exploit the planet’s resources. The planet is inhabited by a primitive alien race called the Na’vi (seen above). Humans are able to create Avatars, genetically engineered copies of the aliens, that they are able to control. Jake unexceptionally falls in love with one of the alien creatures. Written by Cameron eleven years ago as an 80-page treatment, Avatar will be released in Digital 3D on December 18th 2009.

Discuss: What do you think of the Na’vi design?

Looks a little like a mix of the Fifth Element blue opera singer and the skinnyness and body shape of the monster from [REC] IMO but still very cool! I'll be there opening night!
  • Uh, it's alright i guess. I'll wait to see it in motion on the big screen.
  • I'm there. This looks great. The whole concept is just fantastic.
  • Captain Awesome
These look great. I've seen other concept art of this female character and im starting to see the life put into her more and more. Especially the concept of them having light in their bodies.

I'm really excited to see all the details of her being realized in CG. The one leaked concept that came out a while back wasn't too far off.
  • Finally some info on this movie. The art looks great, can't wait to see it on the screen. Gotta give it to Cameron on keeping such a lid on this movie.
  • I totally would. That is what you are asking right?
  • IK!
    Uuhhhh.
  • vrap
I too find the lack of information refreshing. Will this be shown in regular theatres too?
  • hmmmm. i need a trailer to help me have an opinion on this movie
  • Han is Solo
    Not feeling it.
  • One of these days I'm going to hear some Avatar news and not be immediately reminded by the fact that this film is still over a year away. That day is not today.

  • A trailer WOULD help this looks better. Even a teaser of it would be good.
  • Wow, still over a year away? I guess that's comforting in a way, no reason for it not to be perfect. I tend not to get too excited over concept designs and wait til I see some footage. It is a film, afterall - not a comic book. Still good to see things like this trickle out, keeping 'fans' eager. For a whole. Year. Yet...
  • Meh...
  • Even if it's just pre-production, finally something quantifiable about this flick.`

i'm still not at all convinced that this film is going to be the industry changing project that so much of the hype lays it out to be. maybe the FX will kick ass, but for me it will always be story, story, story. i absolutely have faith in cameron's storytelling skills, but i guess since we haven't seen/heard much of the plot, my hesitance outweighs my excitement.

i just wish he had made more films over the past decade. i understand his reasons for the limited films, but i always think filmmakers like cameron are vital to the industry...they keep other filmmakers on their toes, always raising the bar. maybe after a trailer i'll become more excited.
  • Chromey
    That's what I was thinking.
  • Chromey
Uhm, the ENTIRE PLOT leaked YEARS ago. It may have changed some since then but the whole treatment is online.
  • Captain Awesome
It's going to be a mix of using real people to get a desired ultra-realistic 3d character in the film.
  • thats logical. i hope its friggin sweet.
  • Thanks for the heads up! Very keen information.
  • Thanks for keen information. :D
  • What gives you this feeling? Because its 3D?
  • Ryan
    meh...not wowed.
Can this movie live up to the ..."going to change everything" hype...probably not.
  • sounds sexy, in a weird gross alien way..
  • OMG, it's Tyra Banks!
  • Joe Newman
    OH. MY. GOD.

    Jamees Cameron really is alive
  • These aren't official and have been taken down from the Market Saw site. Too bad. I'm itching for info on this film too.
  • AlexB
"Na'vi," huh? Hey! Listen! Watch out!
  • egyptnation
wait a minute... i just realized that this movie has nothing to do with the anime avatar. this whole time i thought cameron was doing a cgi of an anime!
  • Kfizz
They look like zora's from The legend of zelda games.
  • nara
I like her better than Zelda's Navi :P
  • Captain Awesome
Hopefully those rumors of a teaser by Christmas come true.

I've been a good boy this year Santa, I swear! :D
  • For me it depends on what it looks like in action. I'm not sold by the concept art, but the trailer might change my mind.
  • Dr. Doc
i have a feeling that Avatar is going to have the same effect that the original Star Wars had back in 1978

its gonna be freaking huge. epic
  • guy
    Very old art.

    Not the final look.
  • Christopher M
as interesting as these are...I'm more interested in Pandora and what the plants and animals will look like...
  • I think it's beautiful. I love concept art.
  • Amazing concept art. Did they say who is doing the effects for the project since Cameron sold his own in house studio to Mr. Bay?
  • Prat
So are there gona be actual actresses who would play this part? or is it CGI?
  • IMDB lists Gentle Giant Studios, Giant Studios, Stan Winston Studio, and Weta Digital for VFX.
  • Mr B
Neat concept art. I just still haven't gotten excited over this film.
  • 790
    Dosnt do anything for me,,,
  • Check yo sources nurga!
  • Thandrale
Well they're still cool looking. Nice work Jonay. Have you ever done anything for Heavy Metal Magazine? It's the kind of stuff they like for cover art.
  • marz
@egyptnation..dont worry tho.there IS suppose to be a live action avatar movie being made.think they're going with the title:the last airbender tho because cameron already has the avatar name.forgot the director.some reason im thinkin m. knight shamalan was attached but im not sure.

    Slashfilm,

The artist broadcast this notice to all sites to remove his images, and yet you continue to display stolen copyright images that you clearly do not have permission to display?

You are attention whores and I have added your list of sponsors to my Do Not Buy List and have emailed three of them that one of their affiliates is blatantly displaying stolen copyright images. They can personally thank you for them being added to my blacklist.

    You disgust me.
