Great Scott! Universal Home Entertainment has announced that they will be re-releasing the Back to the Future films on DVD in February. All three films have been digitally restored and mastered in High Definition, but that was expected. The big news is that the original film, Back to the Future, will be released as a two-disc special edition.

The new bonus disc will include all the footage from Back to the Future… The Ride, including the lobby que loop, the pre-show, and the entire ride itself. The new collectors edition will also feature the infamous Back to the Future Part II preview special hosted by Leslie Nielsen which orginally aired November 17, 1989 on NBC, and a new documentary called Looking Back to the Future. The two sequels have no new extras. All three discs have a MSRP of $19.98 and will hit in stores on February 10th, 2009.

  • Agreed - I'll sit here in this post and say I know they're screwing me, but the next place I'm going is to order it.
  • Where's the Eric Stoltz as Marty Mcfly footage?? They shot half the movie with him before they brought in MJF!! I wanna see that footage!!
  • AllyndDudnikov
    Eric Stoltz footage please!
  • Hopefully they can release these new DVDs without any framing issues.

    This is heavy.
  • I doubt i will be rebuying this just for the ride.
  • I believe it's "infamous" because in it director Robert Zemeckis claims that hover boards are real. Thus sending milliions of little children scurrying about their local toy stores for their very own hover board.
  • I agree with Ally- Id love to see the Eric Stoltz footage. WIth all the remakes and sequels its amazing that this franchise has not been re-explored!

  • i love Back to the Future... man I miss the 80s.

Question: Does ANYONYE -- Peter, maybe? -- know whether there is any truth to the story about the first release of the BTTF DVDs being faulty and recalled? Supposedly they were framing problems and even fake letterbox black bars in certain scenes (i.e. they superimposed black bars top and bottom to a regular full-screen shot), and they also did not do a quality digital transfer. Rumor has it that if you send your DVDs to a certain address, they will send you replacement disks. Here's a site that explains it: http://www.angelfire.com/film/bttf2/

yes, the first release of the widescreen edition of back to the future part 2 and 3 were recalled due to faulty framing issues. I sent my discs in probably a week after they issued the recall. if you have the full frame set you should have no problem with framing issues since the movies were shot in 1:33 and then later reframed into widescreen.
  • i have yet to buy a back to the future DVD so this sounds like a good deal.

    christmas list here i come
  • You have no idea how long I've been waiting for this. I love the first film and have wanted to buy it independent of its two atrocious sequels for quite a long time.
  • I wouldn't consider it my all time favorite, but it is high up there on my list. This is one of the only movies I feel the need to re-see at midnight showings when they pop up. I can't justify the purchase though, since I already have the three disc set.
    It looks cool though.
  • They aren't real?
  • dammit....gonna have to double dip this one.....
  • J.D.
Peter, just because a comment has a link doesn't mean it's spam. I had a legitimate question regarding whether the claim that the original DVDs had been recalled. I provided a link to explain further. Do you know anything about this?
  • No doubt. This is the footage that I want to see from Universal. This is the defining moment where Stoltz' career stopped existing!
  • Good thing cocaine still exists or where would we be?
  • Mikey M
They want me to buy a new Special Edition but the Special Features suck.
Why would I want to see the ride on DVD?
How about a commentary with MJF or something?
  • Def going into the collection...
  • You want to see the ride on DVD because retarded Universal closed it down at the parks.

I'm kinda pissed that they're releasing this seperate from the Blu-Ray release, but I'm going to buy it just because the artwork is better than the 3-disc set. Also, BTTF is the best movie of all time so I'd probably buy anything BTTF-related that they put-out.
  • Wow, so weird! I literally just got done watching Back to the Future. Still as good as the first time I saw it, so I think $20 is pretty fair.
  • I bought the trilogy box set a while back (when DVD was all sparkly and new), and it has become tattered and over used. This is perfect timing!
  • Back to The Future is my favorite film of all time, so without a doubt, I will buy this. But I'm guessing this is somewhat a double dip before the inevitable Blu-ray super duper trilogy set is released next year.
  • Prat
what was so infamous about that preview special? anyone fill me in?
  • I hate it when they say the movie was "mastered in High Definition" but they don't release a Blu-Ray. It basicly means "when we first released the movie to DVD we didn't give a fuck about giving you a proper transfer but now we do so were gonna give you what you should have gotten in the first place(for $20 of course) and a year and a half from now where gonna release the Blu-Ray(which we could release today) for another $35"

Because I'm a Back to The Future fanboy I will of course purchase both but that doesn't mean I don't know I'm getting raped.
  • Griffin
I hate that they come out with a box set of movies, and then they re-release them years later with a couple more special features. Why cant they just put it all out ONCE? I already have them on special edition, but now i want to but them again. Universal just wants my money.
  • s.davis
Damn it. Not listed. I've been wanting to see that forever. I heard it wasn't on the last dvd set because Stoltz threatened to sue.
  • thomas040
This is one of the gold cows they can milk forever. But damn it's good milk.
  • Wow,
Enjoy creating new styles and upload it to www.uploaded.tv
  • artyom
