Astro Boy Teaser Trailer

Summit Entertainment has released the first teaser trailer for Astro Boy. It looks like it could be cool, but then again, so did IMAGI’s TMNT, and that film ended up being a focused more towards young audiences than everyone was expecting. Check out the trailer after the jump. Leave your thoughts in the comments below!

Official Plot Synopsis: Astro Boy was created by the “god of manga”, Japan’s Osamu Tezuka, in the early 1950s. The iconic character has since found wide popularity around the world as the hero of three acclaimed animated television series spanning over four decades, besides being one of the top licensed properties for merchandising. Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist. Our hero embarks on a journey in search of adventure in a netherworld of robot gladiators before he returns to save Metro City.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on moviefone. Astro Boy hits theaters on October 23rd 2009.

  • It looks fine, for a teaser, but I think the movie will likely be geared towards kids.
  • You can rip into Astro Boy all you like but I'll be damned if I'm going to stand here and let you say something bad about TMNT.
  • Why does Astro boy have breasts in that pic?
  • Pill
As opposed to middle aged man-children who would complain about the movie "raping their childhood"?

    Who'd have thought...
  • Btw, anyone here ever gone to one of those comic/manga shows. The Japanese are hardcore child pervs. A movie about a little robot boy.................... = chills.
  • Btw, anyone here ever gone to one of those comic/manga shows? Browse through the books. The Japanese are hardcore child pervs. A movie about a little robot boy.................... = chills.
  • Well Astro Boy can't be compared to TMNT in the sense that the original TMNT are more for mature audiences whereas Astro is for the younger generation. And I'm fine with that really. I can't wait to see it.
  • Pill
Yes, because North America doesn't have its fair chunk of child-robots amongst its pop culture.

    Those Japanese perverts!
  • Small Wonder was completely innocent.
  • ....and it already looks like it'll be stupid based on the teaser. Sorry I have like...0 interest in this. I just don't see how it could possibly make a good film.
  • I thought we were well past that phase where the studios needed to name off every famous person doing a voice in their animated movies?
  • You think putting the name "Nicholas Cage" next to this movie is going to do it any favors?
  • yeah this is definitely for the kids.
  • Who does Bill Nighy think he is doing all this kiddie crap...Bill Nye?
  • Joe
Summit Entertainment is quickly becoming synonymous with cheap, poor-quality movies. Sex Drive, Molly Hartley, Twilight, Nothing Like The Holidays, and now this, which looks cheap and nowhere up to modern animation standards.
  • It is just me, or does that animation look kind of stiff and not well rendered? Maybe it's just the low-res internet video, but I was a little disappointed. It looked like they were using the outdated technology Pixar threw out after the 1st Toy Story.
  • LoL! It seems most everything is raping someone's childhood memory these days.
  • LoL, I haven't seen a Small Wonder reference in ages....
  • You forgot Never Back Down.... though I did find that movie entertaining, not good, but entertaining.

ouch. they did not need to redeisgn anything, yet they did. why call it astro boy? this is the classic blunder of hollywood - take something already set in style and change it because they think it needs to be "updated". its going to flop, absolutely nothing interesting about it.
  • Chris
Looks like it would be a good kid film. I don't think anyone should expect real depth from something like Astro Boy. I am however, impressed with how well the animation keeps the feel of the old character designs and style.
  • I love Imagi's animation. They got that down pact and set an image for themselves. It's their stories that need development, so while I'll see it, I'll keep my guard up. I hope they pull through though.

Why not turn some focus on animated flicks too Mr. Sciretta, or is there not much news there?
  • This comment raped my childhood.
  • High five and plus 1 for Small Wonder!
  • And so it begins...
  • dude, i was gonna say that... the japanese love gender bending too. so its no surprise they would put breasts on the little robot boy.
  • i wish you would rape my childhood, meli.. wink wink
  • luckily my childhood will remane Un-raped for a little longer

never been huge on astro boy
  • YESSS!!!! ASTRO BOY!!!!!
  • definitely after seeing his oscar worthy performance in Ghost Rider everyone wanted to see more...
  • sex drive was a solid comedy
  • I like TMNT as well.
  • oh big daddy.... it's hard to flirt with the words "rape" and "childhood" in the sentence. lol
  • Captain Awesome
    lol
  • Captain Awesome
How many "holes" does Wall-E technically have?
  • the clone wars. what?
  • mcgruff
um did anyone else not think the animation looks horrific? Sure the movie may be a year from release, but why release a trailer where the pieces of debris astroboy creates look like they came from Missile Command?
  • mynameisearl
ummmmmm.... Astro Boy has been geared towards children for the last 60 years. I'm not quite sure what all the complaining is about considering they've preserved Tezuka's style well. It's just so weird seeing people who think all things from Japan are geared towards the 18-24 demographic.

Small Wonder... WOW! I was but a wee little lad when that was on TV!
When is the big screen adaptation coming from THAT?
  • Couldn't agree more! Trailer wont play for me, though 'AOL is currently unavailable'... drag!
  • Oi Vey
Looks like it came from the same studio who did "Barn Yard"...
  • Puberty?
  • not for me..
  • sleepinginflame
i don't understand why some people think that this being a kids movie is a bad thing. most of my favorite movies are kids movies.
  • This looks bad. First of all, horrible CGI compared to every other big company for it, and two, the character design of the humans looks bad...I also hated TMNT...
  • indeed!
  • I liked the character design in TMNT, but I agree, this one looks pretty rough.
  • it looks exactly like the anime/manga!
    what's not to like?
  • Oi Vey
i understand that, but it still looks generic. I've seent he anime btw, so I have an idea how it should look like.
  • Well, how could they make it not generic and still be true to the original if it is an exact copy?
