Nicole Kidman May Retire From Acting

At a press conference to promote her new film, Australia, Nicole Kidman revealed that she is thinking about retiring from acting:

In terms of my future as an actor and stuff, I don’t know. I am in a place in my life where … I’ve had some great opportunities and I may just choose to have some more children. I’ve no idea what is in my future but I am very at peace with where I want to be…There are many things I want to do besides act.

I’ve always thought Kidman has gotten a raw deal from the press, and I’d honestly be sad to see her go. Between her former marriage with Tom Cruise and her recent string of box office flops, Kidman has not been very successful at maintaining her stardom. Forbes magazine recently ranked her as one of the most overpaid celebrities in Hollywood, her movies earning only $8 for every $1 she got paid (Kidman earned $15 million for The Golden Compass alone). I think that some bad decisions and bad luck have resulted in a terrible reputation for an otherwise fine actress. Deep down, I want Australia to be her redemption, and (if she retires) a spectacular swan song. But her recent films and the reports of a troubled Australia production aren’t doing much to inspire my confidence. What do you guys think?

I think this would be a HUGE tradegy if Kidman retired. She is one of the most versitile actresses on screen today, and even though she may have made some bad choices with films such as Bewitched, Stepford Wives etc, i have never found her performances to be the problem. take The Golden Compass for example, she is perfect as Mrs Coulter. Cold, evil, beautiful and sympathetic. The films utterly souless adaptation of the original text was the problem. And the crappy changes to the script. And that awful little girl. Anyway, In regards to her salary, perhaps she is overpaid, but the fact she can pull of big blockbuster performances with a huge payout and still return to smaller, relatively unknown performances (Fur for example), i doubt she recieved anywhere near those astronomical fees for these smaller rolls.

Anyway, what im saying is i think it is unfair to say that Kidman has a 'terrible reputation' as an actress. Sure there are some doosies, but you look at most of her other performances and they are, without question, outstanding - The Hours, Dogville, Birth, Fur: A Portrait of Diane Arbus, Margot At The Wedding, Cold Mountain, Eyes Wide Shut. All incredible performances.

For me, this would be a gigantic, enormous, colossal, stupendous, immense and whopping tradegy for her to quit acting.

I'm a bit of a fan in case you can't tell.
  • She is getting to be like Tom Cruise. Everytime I see her in a movie I'm like "Hey it's Nicole Kidman trying to be somebody."
  • Angelina said she's gonna retire too.
  • you guys are such fucking idiots. Nicole is renowned for her acting, not her looks. Otherwise you morons would give MEGAN FOX an Oscar.
  • she used to be pretty hot, but now shes a bit scary. i think its the tom cruise taint. anyone who has been with him long enough to have kids most likely knows about all of his dark secrets and dealings with evil aliens. if she retires, i dont think i will miss her, since i havent cared about any movie she has been in for a long time. she is cool and all, but i think her decision wont really affect anything either way.
  • i really like and respect Nicole Kidman. Her career has gotten better in 99 since Cruise divorced her and she started acting in good movies. I like FUR, EYES WIDE SHUT, MOULIN ROUGE!, THE GOLDEN COMPASS, TO DIE FOR, and too many others to list.

I'm gonna miss her if she quit.
  • hear, hear

she's a good actress. golden compass sucked, but she's pretty good in most films she's in

I don't think she was the problem with these "flops". I think how shitty the films where, was the problem.
  • Candelario Krohn
First Joaquin, then Kidman. Next it's Casey Affleck.

    Gus Van Sant kills actors!
  • I absolutely adore her in some movies like Moulin Rouge (although I was paying more attention to Ewan McGregor) and I love Fur too (although I was paying more attention to Robert Downey Jr.) and then I hate her in other movies like Batman Forever (I pretty much didn't like that movie all together). I don't think I'll miss her that much.
  • I'm probably on my own here, but I just absolutely love seeing her on screen, she belongs there. Sure some of the films aren't the greatest but she's ...as said in the article a "fine actress". I've seen anything and everything I can with her in it and if she leaves, well it would suck plain and simple.
Please don't go Mrs. Kidman, please don't go :(
  • that's a real shame. First Jaoquen Phoenix now her. Well lets hope she isn't leaving for a musical career
  • I liked her in Batman Forever!! She was so sexy in that movie.....
    Mmmmmmm Nicole
  • I never thought she was much of an actress until I saw Eyes Wide Shut, which gave me enormous respect for her. I'll be sad to see her go, but I hope she does what she feels is best.
  • Mick J
She was fiiine as hell in Batman Forever.

Sounds like a bummer to me. I always think of Nicole Kidman as adding a sort of respectability and maturity to whatever film she's attached to. It's just plain weird to not consider her appearing in future movies. Her name has a vast aura around it I guess, like if Tom Hanks left or Julia Roberts just suddenly retired (regardless of how you would rate or scale these three's acting ability).

I suppose I would just take it for granted that a big star like Nicole Kidman who has always been there would keep on acting into old age. It's making me feel old now.

I'm a fan, but really don't care about actors and actresses jumping ship. There are plenty more out there ready to fill that little void.

How about giving more "A" roles to Kelli Garner ? I'd be just fine with that.
  • "Deep down, I want Australia to be her redemption, and (if she retires) a spectacular swan song."

    What? Why?
  • Damn, she looks so good in every movie she is in....(sigh)...you will be missed Ms. Kidman....The Others was awesome....
  • yeah shes pretty easy on the eyes
  • gah
Kidman is box office poison. I guess a small few people may take notice.
  • I actually like Nicole Kidman even if she does have that frigid vibe too her.
  • ultimatefilmfanatic
Your posted picture says it all, To Die For is and will always be her best movie, she is amazing in that, her acting is the best that I have ever seen from her.

You know, I used to think she was the sexiest actress in hollywood - since she has had a lot of work done, it almost distracts from her performances, she looks so odd - almost plastic. I was totally distracted in the golden compass, and not just by the bad CGI. While I would have liked to see a solid performance from her, ala Far and away or to die for - Im guessing those are far behind her now - this doesn't really pose as big an impact as she would have liked, me thinks.
  • Wouldn't miss her that much to be honest. She's always been good, but rarely great.

But I was just having a conversation with a friend/work colleague about this: What's happened to her kids with Tom Cruise? Will she spend more time with them?
  • I don't think I will miss her all that much. I do consider Moulin Rouge! to be one of my favorite films, but honestly I won't be wondering where she went.
  • marz
the others was a good movie and it had a good story plot and script which most of the other movies lacked.she did make sum bad choices(like bewitched and that body snatchers remake)but overall she's a good actor.you cant really blame an actor if the scripts no good.look at al pachino.great actor but 88 minutes was a flop.
  • Captain Awesome
I would miss her if she was making memorable work. Which she hasn't in a long time already.
  • Good looking doesn't mean good acting. That's the problem with men when they look on the screen....Why else would people like Jessica Alba be so famous?
  • Al Pacino USED to be an amazing actor. Now he just yells. I don't think I would be all too disappointed even he retired, and he used to be one of my favorite actors. I don't think Nicole Kidman did much for The Others either, although she screamed exceptionally well in the beginning....try movies like Moulin Rouge and Eyes Wide Shut. She delivered something to those.

she always bings a nice quality to the films shes in. she has a sensitivity that she treats her characters with that i find very entertaining. i think theres a lot of great more roles for her in the world of cinema, if only she tok them (wtf golden cumpus, stepford wives, bewitched...) She's a plain old great actress who should try and stick to the inte3nsity of her craft. i look very forward to seeing her in Australia. get some of that hot passionate acting she's got. don't go!
  • She's definitely a talented actress with some recent bad luck. Perhaps she should just take a break? It would be sad to see her go. I always thought of her being one of those long-timers who would be appearing in films until the day she died.
  • Oi Vey
in the early 2000s, we was on a roll. But I think she has aged in recent years (she's still pretty but notiably older). It would be shame to lose her.
  • TtotheC
who cares.. we can all watch BMX Bandits on DVD :P
  • always bings a different quality
