Early Reviews of Valkyrie Label Tom Cruise As Laughable

Despite a solid pedigree, with Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie taking up directing and writing duties respectively, Valkyrie has taken a drubbing on the PR front, mostly because of people’s poisonous initial reactions to Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. A recent article at the NYTimes laid out what a high-stakes bet Valkyrie is for MGM Studios:

Valkyrie has turned into a test not only of Mr. Cruise’s career durability, but of MGM’s determination — with new ownership, and under the chairmanship of Harry E. Sloan since 2005 — to be taken seriously as a producer and distributor of the kind of risky event films that define a major studio.

If Valkyrie succeeds, even moderately, MGM wins a modicum of credibility in image-is-everything Hollywood. A failure brings fresh sniping that the studio does not know what it is doing, making the job of attracting top-notch talent even harder. Financially speaking, the stakes are considerable. With a stated production budget of $75 million — competitors insist it is closer to $90 million — Valkyrie is the most expensive film made for distribution by MGM under  Sloan’s watch. The studio will now spend about $60 million to market the movie — if nothing else, to make the point that it can play in the big leagues.

Unfortunately, we’re now hearing some pretty bad buzz about Valkyrie from MSNBC’S The Scoop (via Get The Big Picture), citing unnamed sources who have seen the movie and call Cruise’s performance laugh-inducing. In particular, a scene where Cruise was forced to give the “Heil Hitler” salute:

It’s an unsettling scene but you almost start to laugh…His character is resisting it but you never forget it’s Tom Cruise saying “Heil Hitler.” It’s funny and shocking at the same time.

Sources also say that the film isn’t very thrilling at all:

It’s a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms. It’s too bad. And Tom doesn’t speak with a German accent — though they did add a voiceover of him speaking German to the beginning of the film. Still, it’s as if he could say ‘I complete you’ at any time. This is not his Oscar moment.

Head over to The Scoop for some more details. While these unnamed sources may or may not be an appropriate gauge of what general audiences will think, I’m still holding out hope that Singer can deliver a thriller on par with The Usual Suspects (although more and more I begin to doubt). After all, the last Valkyrie trailer wasn’t half bad. Right?

Update: /Film commenter Cerisier points out that one should probably take the above anonymous sources with a pound of salt. I would wholeheartedly agree.

/Film commenter Emily directs us to The Independent, which has reports from screenings that took place on Saturday and Sunday. According to the article, the screening eliminated fears that Cruise would attempt a German accent and also garnered  “shockingly positive” reviews. According to Steve Gaydos, executive editor of Variety:

All the buzz is that it’s pretty good…Von Stauffenberg is not a typical role for Cruise, but in the event, he is a terrific actor who has surrounded himself with some of the most talented people around.

In other words, Valkyrie certainly still has the potential to be a big hit. More reports from screenings as they roll in.

For me, the historically-inaccurate scene was when he danced around in nothing but his tighty-whities and that eye patch.
  • phoenixgenesis
Unfortunately, the film has many historically accurate moments, most notably the ending. I think this film was pretentious and boring and that Tom Cruise was not the right person for the role.
  • you had me at 'HEIL!!'
  • Being a fan of all things cinema, I will probably see it. Honestly though my interest in it doesn't exist.
  • People seemed intent on hating this film from the outset, so it's not shocking. That and they all love making Tom Cruise jokes.
  • I guess comedy is the way forward for Cruise.
  • AJ
Is this the same situation as Marie-Antionette? From the outset we knew there would be no accents in that film for artistic reasons, and it worked. This almost seems as though Cruise couldn't do the german accent so he just didn't.
  • N_P
I don't understand the fuss about not having accents. Ok, its a film about Germany, set in Germany with German characters, but honestly what's the point of having them speak ENGLISH lines in a German accent? Either go the whole hog and have them write the entire script in the German language, then add subtitles for english-speaking audiences, or don't bother and focus on what the film's about. Or better yet, have German (or German-speaking) actors?
  • His work in Tropic Thunder was enough for me to grant him one more chance and this movie is that chance for me. He was brilliant in Tropic Thunder and single handedly saved that movie. This has potential to be great, just gotta see how well it was written in my opinion.
  • Derek
I find it laughable that these so called reviewers cant over look the actor and just focus on the performance. If their heads are to clouded then they shouldnt have a say as to how good the film is or isnt.

I still think it looks great, and Ill be seeing it.
  • theuglyspirit
This is to bad, because I first heard of this film before all the bad buzz and was generally excited to see what Singer would do after X-Men and Superman. Now, I just don't care about seeing this movie, and it's not the buzz that's killing it, it's the trailers. The trailers don't prove that this could be a great movie.
  • andrewritt
I seriously doubt that these reviewers have actually seen the film. Even if they have, a reviewer should remove the actor's personal life and past career in judging the performance in the film.

The trailers look great, and Singer hasnt failed to deliver yet.
  • The great bun
Like I said before, this is cable tv or whatever at best. I don't care to see Tom Cruise's face towering above me in a theater...
  • another reason why i hate celeb blogs like Perez Hilton. I want to take actors' work seriously but it's hard when we see their faces on gossip blogs everyday
  • i like Marie Antoinette, i thought it was well done
  • agreed
  • i'll go see it.
  • Cerisier Du Japon
I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan and I probably won't even catch this on dvd but MSNBC The Scoop is an offshoot of the tabloid In Touch Weekly. The Scoop's "sources" are the same "sources" as the weekly trash paper which means it's a lot of made up junk. Walk by any supermarket check out stand and it's clear In Touch is not a fan of Tom Cruise. They hate him. Again this movie could totally suck but take anything said by the Scoop with a pound of salt.
  • the reviewer doesn't know shit. How can you judge a film based solely on the fact that Tom Cruise looks like Tom Cruise. And the trailers for this movie are fucking fantastic. I mean they're suspensful and thrilling which is what the movie is. I personally cannot wait for another Bryan Singer movie.
  • ChamberDoc
Actually, Tom Cruise does resemble Colonel Count Claus von Stauffenberg.
  • The trailers look ok I suppose. I say I will see it, but it may not be at the theater.
  • I'll wait for more reviews to pour in and see the film before I place judgment. I'm going for Singer though, not Cruise.
  • Matthew McConaughey saved it too. As much as I hate to say it. His character had the best resolution.
  • they need to shut the fuck up
  • another reason why i hate most film critics.
  • I don't know about all this. Sure Mr. Cruise has been crazy these past few years, but he's a great actor.

Look at his performance in the Last Samurai. I had no intentions of seeing that movie, ever, but I did and it blew me away. I have the same feeling about this movie. Give it a chance.
  • Emily
Yeah sorry David Chen, but made up sources in a gossip blog do not equal reviews. This film sucks because “It’s a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms?" Um, weren't all Nazi's white? If you want some real info from the screening of this film head over to here:

    http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/f...

There are actual quotes from real, named people including the executive editor of Variety.
  • The lack of German accents really kills the gravitas of what is supposed to be a very moody atmosphere.. I've read the script, and McQuarrie certainly did his part, but with all the Nazis speaking in faux-Euro-British accents and the 'flashy' Singer style... I just can't see this succeeding up to critical/commercial standards.
  • "It’s a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms." Well, what did you expect? A bunch of black dudes in Nazi uniforms? Now that Obama won the election, do we have to bring a black person along for everything?
  • I don't have a problem that they're not using German accents, but I do have a problem that the rest of the cast has British accents and then Cruise comes on the scene with his American accent. It killed the mood of the trailer for me and I giggled. From the trailer I have not been able to take him seriously, so it lessens my interest in the movie as a whole. I probably won't see it till it's on DVD or comes on cable.
  • Jeff Whitley
    Cruise hummm
Not that this really matters but since his Scientology interview, I've noticed a downward spiral. Not to mention the fact that he does not fit the roll, to some degree he is typecast. His 8mos study getting ready for the role obviously didn't payoff.
  • thats kind of a shame, i was looking forward to this film alot.
  • The huge problem I have always had with Tom Cruise in any movie is that he always is "Tom Cruise trying to be ....." Every movie I see him in (even the ones I like) are still just him playing someone else. He never seems to be able to become the character. Plus, if you play a german, at least have a german accent.
  • I think with Marie-Antionette the no accents work because it was more from her perspective. With her being a more teenage mentality, there was no reason for accents. A film about assassinating Hitler has to follow a different train of thought.
  • "It’s a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms."

Yeah, it really should have been a bunch of black guys in Nazi uniforms... that wouldn't have been weird.

My view on all this... I'm going to see it first. I'm more than willing to look past Cruise's religions affiliations and look to his performance and I'm capable of seeing a performance of his as more than just "Tom Cruise plays...".

I support the idea of them not having accents, I think a German accent would detract more than it's absence, we're here to see a performance, not an imitation.
  • Oi Vey
After read "It's a bunch of white guys in Nazi uniforms", i question the intelligence of the 'secret reviewers', who may haven been the same people who were rooting for another Nutty Professor.
  • Oi Vey
True be told, he's not a good character actor, like Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp, or whomever.
  • I labeled Tom Cruise as laughable long before the early reviews of Valkyrie...
  • I'm still going to see this movie regardless. To me this movie has the perfect plot , which is based on true events, and the right people to play the parts. ......I hate early "reviews".
  • Cerisier Du Japon
Unfortunately word of the negative "reviews" will spread fast through cyberspace and will stick too. They'll even be picked up by some of the entertainment shows and will be given validity because they have MSNBC attached to them. If you do a google news check on "Tom Cruise" the first news item to pop up is from a French site and reads "Tom Cruise laughable in Valkyrie". The US gossip blogs are already making fun of him and the movie. Again I'm not a fan of Tom, although I think he's a good actor, but I hate when this type of witch hunt (maybe too strong?) happens to anyone.
  • ilves
Why would they have an accent? They're speaking German. Germans don't have accents speaking German. It's ridiculous.
  • AntoBlueberry
I agree. Either they shoot the movie with German actors or it's stupid for them to use a fake German accent. It's a convention that you hear them speak English. In italy Tom Cruise speaks with an Italian voice, we know it's not real but no one was so stupid to try to dub him using Italian with an American accent.
And a journalist from Italian newspaper la Repubblica saw the movie too and wrote good things about the flick and Cruise's performance.
  • people are really, really dumb....
  • if they spoke in authentic German accents, most Americans wouldn't be able to understand them.

They didn't speak with fake accents in MARIE ANTOINETTE, either. I prefer it if Americans use proper accents (or at least, faux British) accents in movies about non-Americans, non-Britons.
  • yeah, that's Tom Cruise. i see his face everyday in the media and it's hard to see beyond his fame. As a kid, I used to see him as a movie star.... now all i can think is 'TOM CRUISE, THE SCIENTOLOGIST CRAZY"
  • i know. you said it well. if people are bothered by Cruise's American accent in this movie, then are they saying the movie should be done in German with German actors? How silly
  • I agree, wearing a fat suit and dancing to hip hop is much more effective than shouting "Heil Hitler" for him. I pray for the day he can finally regain his dramatic reputation and give us another Magnolia performance.
  • Nothing about Robert Downey Jr. here???

Personally I found something to laugh about in every Tropic Thunder character.
  • Do you think any Jewish people will go to see the movie? :P (OR MAYBE THE REVIEWERS WERE JEWISH!!!)
  • You will not learn anything in this life if you read reviews from critics. They ar eno talent, spiteful and wrong all the time. Be your own critic. Slash- I expect more from you to print crp like this that destroys films before they make it to the bloody theatre.
