First Look: Sandy Collora’s Hunter Prey

You might not recognize Sandy Collora’s name, but you’ve probably seen his films. Special effects artist and creature designer turned filmmaker, Collora is probably best known as the director of one of the most famous fan films of all time Batman: Dead End. If you haven’t seen it, check it out now. The film is most memorable for it’s Hollywood-level production values and a shocking climax that involves Batman battling Alien and Predator. Collora’s 2004 follow-up, World’s Finest, which involved the team-up of Batman and Superman, was not as well received.

Four years later, Collora has returned with his first original feature film, Hunter Prey. Shot with the RED camera system, and shot in Mexico over the course of 18 days on a shoestring budget. IO9 has an interview with Collora, along with a bunch of production photos (a couple which we have included in this post). Collora explains the premise of the film below:

“The film centers around a crew of special forces commandos who must recapture an alien prisoner that has escaped after the military transport ship carrying it crashes on a desolate and hostile planet. There are subtle political and environmental overtones that I certainly don’t hit anyone over the head with at all, but that will hopefully make you think about things like war, politics and current events, by presenting them in situations cinematically from a uniquely different perspective. That’s one of the great things about Science Fiction; You can tell the audience something in a very unique way by using the guise of a futuristic world or society that can reflect our own. The film, very much like the approach Jim Cameron took with “The Terminator”, is a very small piece of a much larger picture. It concentrates on how the bigger situation (which in this case, is interplanetary war) is affecting the two main characters, who are now separated from it, and how they relate and react to their situation and each other as a result of it. As the story unfolds and more things are revealed about the characters and what their relationship is, we had to create in a sense, what we could not show. This was a very interesting challenge not only for co-writer Nick Damon and myself, but for the actors as well because through their performances and the dialogue, they had to build in the audience’s imagination, what we couldn’t afford to actually build on screen.”

Hunter Prey is now in Post Production. You can read the whole interview on io9.com.

  • i really like the Moon-Desert photo.... it's so GORGEOUS goddamnit!!

does collora not have an original bone in his body? first he tries to make a name for himself by using copyrighted characters (anyone can tell you what a bonehead move that is) and then he rips off star wars for his next flick. stormtroopers, sandpeople and tatooine... it's one thing to take inspiration it's another to pretty much copy directly. jeez.

Of all the comments in this thread that I'd love to retort, yours stands out to me as the most necessary.
First off, you criticize him for trying "to make a name for himself by using copyrighted characters" and claim that it is a bonehead move. You do realize that you're posting this comment in a thread about a Feature-Length Film that has since been produced by the same guy that long ago borrowed those copyrighted characters? Obviously, if the guy has the time and money to make such a film somebody is funding him, and therefore, it did work.
Secondly, all those who keep beating the SW horse. Get off it. Helmets and armor have been around way longer than Lucas. Sci-fi and alien stories also pre-date Lucas. Additionally, Lucas borrowed ideas from countless sources to assemble his masterpiece. (Hey Lucas, don't you think you ease up on the ripping of Japanese culture for your tale? Kimonos? Samurai - I mean Jedi? )
Don't get me wrong, SW is great, but stop discounting newer works just because they remind you of something you've seen before. (I first noticed how the shape of the helmets are rather Roman in style, not how there may be a resemblance to a Lucas character.)
And third, to criticize any sci-fi film for the authentic-looking depiction of an other-worldly setting (IMO), is ridiculous. Look up in the night sky. Do you realize how near-infinitely many planets and moons and stars are really out there. Is Lucas the only one allowed to depict a desert planet? Or multiple viewable objects from the planets surface?
  • This definitely looks like Star Wars. But I always wanted George Lucas to do a miniseries about StormTroopers.
  • Jerry butler
He did, watch the clone wars.
  • holy shit that rips off star wars hard
  • it does look like its from the same universe as star wars. just a few color changes. the only thing that can really distinguish it would be if it had gratuitous violence and sex.
  • Pics look awesome
  • NINJARTIST
Although I assume that few reading this have not seen Batman: Dead End, wouldn't it be in their benefit to watch without knowing how it ends? I was completely surprised and pleased when I first witnessed it... Just a suggestion.
  • Dr. Lizardo
two brand new awesome looking sci-fi movies in the same day?! This is sweet! I'm excited. Digging the new comments section, by the way
  • Those pictures really caught my interest. I can't tell if they are cgi or real, which can be a good thing, I guess.
  • Jerry
"George Lucas is gonna sue somebody!"
  • Stormtroopers???
  • At first glance I thought this was a Star Wars related news story. Those uniforms are a little too similiar. Then again a lot of stuff out there resembles each other all the time. If it's half way decent I'd be willing to give it a shot.
  • Jerry B
I really like the double moon over a desert shot. Nothing like SW, cuz SW has a double SUN.

Also....................... the Arc trooper in the top pic isn't a total rip-off.

*This post brought to you by the fine makers of Sarcasmo!*
  • Solid
Star Wars? I was thinking Halo. Microsoft will be watching you.
  • Count me interested.
  • Did I really just waste five minutes of my life watching Batman fight PREDATOR?! Geez.
  • Brian
i don't know about hollywood level production for Dead End. Bad lighting and set/location. the costumes were very nice though.
  • WHEN IS HOLLYWOOD GOING TO DO A FILM VERSION OF "THIS MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS"???????????

come on come on I'm waiting
  • But it still looks awesome!
  • Harry Lime
The blue creature in the second pane looks shockingly similar to an extremely grizzled version of Abe from Hellboy.
  • Wall•EPlaysPong
I see Boba Fett, maybe Sebulba, and Tatooine with the two moons in these pics.
  • World's Finest wasn't SCREENED at the same festival his debut Batman: Dead End because of a new rule prohibiting Fan Fiction at the Comic-Con film festival. It wasn't because it wasn't well received, it just wasn't received in general.
  • I never said it was screened at Comic Con. When the short came online, it didn't get nearly as much buzz and acclaim as his first short
  • To my understanding it was well received when it debuted on the internet but due to the fact most people were unaware of it's existence, it wasn't a huge turn out. It was originally for executives at big studios to watch in hopes that Collora might score a contracted deal.
  • Captain Awesome
haha that looks so fucking corny.
  • J.Kerr
It looks like Lord of the Rings in the star wars universe, I like.
  • gb
Those are totally the same helmet from the rocketeer! haha
  • Have you ever seen LoTR?
  • Whatever it's similar to those costumes are awesome.
  • Albert Brodsky
Sorry but this dude's work is always corny. It takes itself too seriously and never works. Bunch of crap that Batman movie was, even for a fanboy.
  • dan griffn
Holy crap...That is a really cool clone trooper. i've always liked the clone troopers.
  • Wait, did George Lucas secretly shoot Episode VII? Oh no...
  • JoCuteoh
Wow! Look at all the negativity and nasty comments. Ouch! You complain that nothing anyone does is ever as good as the original Star Wars, then when somebody DOES actually go and make something 70's, groovy cool like this, you slam it. Alas, the greasy haired, pimple faced, fanboys will never be appeased. Sigh...
