Summit Developing Three Twilight Sequels

Twilight doesn’t hit theaters until next Friday, and Summit Entertainment has already aquired the rights to the next three novels in Stephenie Meyer’s vampire romance series. According to THR, Twilight scribe Melissa Rosenberg has signed on to pen the next two screenplays, based on the books New Moon (you can read the first chapter here) and Eclipse. A writer has not been hired to adapt the fourth book, Breaking Dawn.

The films themselves have yet to be officially greenlit, but I’m sure after the first film does monster business next week, it will only be a matter of time. Word is that Summit would like to shoot the next two films back to back, as they did with The Matrix sequels and Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Smart way to build the hype.

Can anyone explain to me what all the buzz on Twilight is about? I have not read the novel so I cannot yet compare it to other franchise adaptations. However, judging from pictures and footage that I have seen for this film, I have a feeling this movie is not going to live up to all of that hype...

I know how joeda feels. I haven't read the book, but I've been informed by the literary experts at the University of Wikipedia of what happens. I know its just a fad, but if they are developing sequels then it will be a fad that stays with us for a while. TRhe annoying thisng is that there will be so much hype to a film that doesn't seem to have any real substance. Thats just judging from the trailers and Dr. Wikipedia's explanation of what this Twilight business is all about. I could be wrong, it could be fantastic, however, as this has been aimed at teenage girls and hormonal mums, I doubt it.

Back-to-back is a good idea since Vampires don't age.
  • @ joeda & Nish
    - no we can't really explain it, you kind of have to read the books to understand =) and Nish...if you're looking for substance in a trailer then perhaps you're looking in the wrong place.

I read the whole series over the past month and they're a pretty easy read with a lot of very cool and original ideas littered throughout. It's hard not to get taken by the kinds of characters Meyers has created, the Cullen vamp family primarily. I can attest that it's not a fad...sure young women have been the primary audience for the novel but I'm a 24 year old male college grad and I loved them, even if they were slightly lacking in the action category.

That being said, I'm woefully concerned about the films and am almost dreading seeing it in theaters next week. I'd love for it to be as great as it should be but I have a feeling that the same style that makes characters pop in the book won't be carried over to the screen.

    We can only hope.

Didn't they shoot all three Lord of the Rings films at the same time?

I'm only interested in New Moon: The Movie for the beginning and the end, the middle has some poor pacing and gets tiresome. Eclipse is the book I want to see made into a movie. I don't think Breaking Dawn will make a good movie when I think of the novel in movie form a lot of it doesn't work, but you know they'll do it anyway because they want to tell the completely story of Edward and Bella.

hey okay so i think making the books into movies is a GREAT idea i dont think i would be as excited if i did not already know that stephanie meyer [the writer] had SO MUCH INPUT AND SAY IN THE MOVIE! so i think it will be great because she is so excited about it also i think when the movie will come out i think parents will see it and understand why there kids went so crazy over the "vampire human love" it also gives the kids who cant read as well or who cant get into the book but still feel the love and emotion and passion that the people who do and continue and who have read the books a chance to fully experince as we did while reading the books and since they started the series as movies it would only be fair to the fans both book and movie fans to be able live and witness the magic for themselves in action so the whole series needs to be a movie so it can be brought to life for everyone to experince and love and for the book readers as well when ever just reading the book is not enough they can pull out there dvd and watch and get the butterflies they felt over and over again the more and more the read the books the same way while watching the movies!!!!

I don't think Breaking Dawn would make a good movie... no action at all, just a lot of intense build up. Great to read, would not be great to watch on screen.

I'm excited to see New Moon just mostly for the development of Jacob's character... but someone else was correct when they said that book was lacking in action too. There's more than there was in Breaking Dawn, but not much more. However I think there's a lot of suggestion of action happening behind the scenes of Bella's knowlege that Cahterine can add in to keep the audience happy.

After Twilight I think Eclipse would make the best movie, just based on the way it's written.

And for everyone so concerned that the movie won't add up to the book... Don't be so sure!!! From everyone who's seen it, it seems the reaction is quite positive. Of course it won't be the same experience as reading a book is... in that way, no movie is as good as the novel they are based on because we all have certain images in our minds when we read, and a movie can never duplicate that. Novels are always better than the films made out of them: Look at the Harry Potter movies. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy the Harry Potter movies and see every one of them, though.

Then there's that rare occassion when the movie is actually better than the book, like with The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks or Fight Club (well at least in my opinion).

Why don't all the fans of the novel just go see before they judge it??

If you have not read the books you are surely missing out. i read all four in a week and loved every second of it. its more than just a teenage vampire love story, although my 15 year old sister in laws love it lol. i highly recommend you read the book first. If you see the movie first it clouds your imagination. Your not free to envision the characters and scenery & in my opinion that is part of the experience you get from reading. It's also a heck of a lot easier to compare the movie to the book. I would think that you would want to skip a lot in the book if you have seen the movie. but yeah, go read. its amazing!!!!!

i have read all the books i was a fan of the books before there was ever gonna be a movie i was one of the people who had to wait for the next books to come out for a YEAR!!! longest year of my life....i have my own view of the characters there voices wats going on .... but i think the movie will bring out stephanies point for me. i want the movies i think they will be good and well deserved. so dont tell me to read i have already read it 3 times all the books my mom may get a lil mad if she sees me with twilight OR ANY OF THE BOOKS in my hands anymore.

i think breaking dawn would be fine there would be action like you said catherine can spice it up a lil but to were the book lovers would still love it.
i like your comment not to much i can disagree with.
except.....i was reading in entertainment weekly that catherine guesstimates a $150 million dollar gross profit before new moon can get a green light for production even though the screenwriter as been signed for 3 more movies and "edward and bella" have agreed to do 3 more movies does not mean that there will be twilight has to be a hit first which im confident it will be.
then we will have to see how the movies turn out i think twilight will be to everyones likeing and so will new moon , eclipse, and breaking dawn...[weather it lacks in aciton or not] they are still edward and bella and for me it will NEVER change my perception or my imagination of the characters i still get the butterflies i first got the first time i read the book 3 times afterwards and the movie wont change that because they are two differnat things indeed.
  • marissa
agreed...mandy are you excited for the twilight movie?

oh well....you can go screw yourself.....maybe you should read the damn book before start saying that crap and not just look at the pictures!

I think the books are great, It's a great story even if the writing isn't exactly excellent. However, Stephanie Meyer has said before that she is a story teller, not writer. I think that we are all lucky she decided to make her dream a reality. Without the books, there would be no movie, or worse, no Edward Cullen. Ever since reading Twilight when it was first published, I have been disappointed in guys since none seem to compare to Edward. So if the books or movies lack action is a moot point, the books are based on a romance between a human and a vampire, which is exactly what the movie portrays.

though it is true that breaking dawn lacks the intense action that both twilight and eclipse portray. the end of the series should get its chance on the big screen. though the action scenes are minimal it is better writing and has a more steady storyline than both new moon and eclipse. all of the books were excellent reads but if any of the books should not be made to movies it is most certainly new moon. it lacks action and it has quite a dull storyline. unless they go through the middle two hundred pages of the book in seconds many of the fans will be put off. though the book was a decent read the movie new moon will be a bust. thats why they need to make eclipse and breaking dawn to make up for new moon. i loved all the books and like they read the books many fans will feel obligated to see new moon, the same way the felt with reading it...like they had to but they weren't quite sure about it and many didn't like the book new moon. will the movie be different??

I am a 30yr old mom of 4. My oldest is 12 and she was really wanting to see the movie, and she was wanting the books for Christmas. I had heard the books were good, but that if you had read the books, then the movie did not live up to par.

My daughter and I went and watched the movie after Christmas, and I have to say, I ABSOLUTLY LOVED the movie!!! I am so hooked now, lol, and I will be reading all of the Twilight books now that my daughter got for Christmas. I so hope they are making movies to go along to the other books.

I was really take by surpise, had no idea the movie would be THAT GREAT!
I did not want it to end.

    New Twilight Fan,
    Mandy
