Crossing Over Movie Trailer

The Weinstein Co has released a movie trailer for Crossing Over, a “multi-character drama about immigrants of different nationalities struggling to achieve legal status in Los Angeles. The film addresses the issue from the point of view of the immigrants, as well as the immigration authorities tasked with enforcing the nation’s immigration laws.”

Looks a bit too preachy heavy handed or obvious, even for me. A bit like Paul Haggis’ Crash on crack. Harrison Ford is looking a bit old, and is it just me or is Ford starting to sound like Clint Eastwood? The film also stars Ashley Judd, Sean Penn, and Ray Liotta. It’s also worth mentioning that the film is directed by South African filmmaker Wayne Kramer (The Cooler), who also happens to be a naturalized US citizen. Watch the trailer below and tell me your thoughts in the comments.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Yahoo. Crossing Over hits theaters in 2009.

  • decent cast, bad trailer

Preachy? I couldn't see anything apart from the politically motivation. I'm all for immigrants coming to America, they just have to do it legally. Breaking the law isn't cool, kids.
  • And Preachy is exactly the word I would use also
  • Steelo
well, everyone got on his case for the Crystal Skull and now he's doing this type of movie. I figure he and clint are doing this to make a statement because they're older now.

As far as preachy is concerned, man so was Kung Fu Panda, people just liked the kung fu.

I agree, this just looks like a Lifetime movie. I predict a bomb. Come on Harrison, more Indy less Indie.
  • theuglyspirit
May not be as terrible as Crash, but I won't be taking that risk.

i think it's nice to see Harrison doing a serious role again. it's like back in the 80's where he does small serious roles in between Indy flicks. also you can see how good a job with lighting they did to make him look not so old in Indy IV (and the slicked back hair in this one never looks good on him).

also, harrison angry face= still the best thing ever

Kramer also directed Runnig Scared (2006) and that movie very good, better than the cooler.

I myself find this movie very very strong in a way, I guess you have to live something like that to even begin to understand how powerful and how it can touch a nerver with people. I came to the US when i was 10 years old ILEGALLY, and work my way up to a citizen. That was a hard thing to do not know what can happen or if you are going to be separated from your parents at any time. Now that am older i went through the same thing when i got marry. My wife can to the US not knowing if we were going to be separeted and if we can even start a family. Thank God that everything is ok now my wife is a recident alien (I hate that word alien she is not form mars) but there was a i time where i was to a point where i would do anything to be with her. I guess all am saying is that if you can relate to the film you will love it if not you will not.

Yeah I loved Running Scared and The Cooler but this looks like a pile of shit. I mean a movie about racial issues featuring a gang initiation and a kid crossing the border to be with her mother? This may as well be one of those Spoofs, call it Message Movie.
  • @TheDaftPunk
You don't think free people should be able to travel freely, with respect to property rights?

It looks like it'll be a little preachy but hopefully the message will be good.

I'm amazed, Ashley Judd is playing a role outside her norm.

How about a movie about Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean who have been in solitary confinement for the past 18 months for shooting a drug-smuggling illegal alien (who has since been released!)?

How about a movie from the perspective of a mom & pop business that goes under because they cannot compete with businesses which are able to offer lower prices by nature of exploiting illegal immigration?

How about a movie from the perspective of a low-wage American (or legal immigrant) who is having his wages undercut by illegal aliens willing to work for illegal wages?

How about a movie about the innocent young black kids being killed from coast to coast by illegal alien gang members in MS-13? And the Los Angeles city council members who continue to encourage illegal immigration regardless?

I guess Sean Penn and Harry Ford don't care about these people...

This movie will FLOP! Typical politically-correct Hollywood fluff.

This movie looks like it relies too heavily on morality. Just from the comments on this website you can see that people's views are mixed. It will probably end up being too preachy and one-sided and thus ineffective. Hopefully it won't be as bad as crash but I think it will be just as heavy handed. And Sean Penn is not in this movie.

"How about a movie about Border Patrol agents Ramos and Compean who have been in solitary confinement for the past 18 months for shooting a drug-smuggling illegal alien (who has since been released!)?"
Sounds like the only victim is the "illegal alien."
"How about a movie from the perspective of a mom & pop business that goes under because they cannot compete with businesses which are able to offer lower prices by nature of exploiting illegal immigration?"
Effects from govt rule and capitalism, not from crossing an imaginary border.
"How about a movie from the perspective of a low-wage American (or legal immigrant) who is having his wages undercut by illegal aliens willing to work for illegal wages?"
    Same as above.
"How about a movie about the innocent young black kids being killed from coast to coast by illegal alien gang members in MS-13?"
The drug war, and most gangs, can only exist because of govt restrictions.
"And the Los Angeles city council members who continue to encourage illegal immigration regardless?"
Don't know much about this specifically but if they're supporting individuals and not govt I don't see much wrong with that.

Crash 2: Taking it to the Border
  • I've seen the movie and it was actually one of the best Immigrant-themed movies I've ever seen.

I as an immigrant myself can definitely relate to the story and actor Cliff Curtis gives a great performance in this one.

by the way, Happy belated Birthday, Peter!
Party on and God bless :)

"I guess Sean Penn and Harry Ford don’t care about these people…"

the ellipses either mean you want to rile people up or you're an idiot who can't finish a sentence. i'm thinking a combo of both

"I’m all for immigrants coming to America, they just have to do it legally. Breaking the law isn’t cool, kids."

Irony with some preachy ice cream on the side.

cooler was sick, running scared was great, trailer looks heavy but good.
Kramer is def. a filmaker to watch so i am in, and the cast is good too.

Someone is looking for an Oscar. I'll go see it. But then again I'm an immigrant. I don't think it's preachy, these kinds of things happen. Most immigrnats have a life dramatic enough for someone to write a book about. People don't talk about their war torn homelands or how they almost died i from the violence or starvation and again in the deserts on their way here. People don't talk about how their sister was raped but she didn't go to the police because she was afraid of being deported to a country she hadn't been in since she was an infant.

Seriously, this stuff really does happen and it's very common. The movie is taking the safe way out.

Can't wait to see this...love the cast!

There is a rumor out on how an Iranian anti defamation organization pressured the studio to cut an honor killing scene/plot twist. This is the reason for the huge delays in release, or so the rumor goes. If a special interest group can do that, then whats the point of the movie. I'm sure the agents/law enforcement officers will continue to be portrayed as violent racist scum that prey on poor illegal single mothers just trying to live the american dream. Or maybe I will be wrong and the movie will surprise me...

"I’m all for immigrants coming to America, they just have to do it legally. Breaking the law isn’t cool, kids."

I respect your point of view, but you have no idea how hard it is to do it the legal way. Unless you have a million dollars (literally, to apply for an investor-visa) it's almost impossible. It doesn't matter if you are an experienced professional, with a master's degree, have kids who are U.S. citizens, etc. The current laws make it impossible to get a green card.

If it was as easy as you think, all that people would do it legally and not risking their lives.
