Benjamin Button Poster is Backwards

Earlier this week we complained about the lack of theatrical posters for David Fincher’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Looks like Paramount has sent a bath to theaters this week. Defamer snapped this photo at a recent multiplex screening. You might think the poster is in the frame backwards, but it isn’t. As you will notice that “Christmas Day” is printed from left to right. The backwards text and logo is a clever nod to the film’s story of a man who ages in reverse. I’m not a big fan of the close-up headshot of Brad Pitt (almost ala Apatow), but I love the concept. It will definitely get people to do a double take. What do you guys think?

  • Mike
I think the next role Brad has to do is portray a young-gish Robert Redford.
  • Ryz
Well i like the idea of the text of it being backwards but the annoying thing will be it'll take forever to find out what the name is if u didn't know what the movie was called
  • The Burg
i would of kept the stars names correct and just had the title backwards
  • Steelo
I like the subtle design, but if you're gonna do a close up shot it feels like it needs something else do symbolize a passage of time, like the text fading out or something. But then I'm only looking at a photo of a poster.

But either way someone is thinking properly.

It's cool to see Brad the way he sees himself in the mirror. Now if only we can see Angelina/Jennifer the way he gets/got to see them.
  • miklebanks
    predictable
  • Cool poster
  • AJ
This poster clearly goes hand in hand with a Cate Blanchett one that will be the mirror image of this, perhaps with the 'Christmas Day' backward. I don't think the names need to be put forward. This poster has one of the most recognizable stars in hollywood so his name is clearly there. Blanchett is also very well known and has a very distinct name so her name doesn't really need to be forward.
  • J.D.
It should be a picture of the "child version" or the "old man version" of Brad Pitt.

And then just have his name on there "BRAD PITT" -- that would get people talking.
  • The marketing is terrible. The movie looks fantastic; I am worried it will fail at the BO :-/
  • Mok
no credit? I peeped you dudes to the design back when you thought it didn't exist...
  • Go Goya
I like it. It's subtle. It doesn't smash you over the face with one of those small paragraphs of text layered over it that batters you over the head with the concept.

"From the moment we're born, we begin to die...
    Unless you're Benjamin Button..."

Though I do agree with J.D. that they should've put a different version of the character on the poster. That, combined with the backwards text would almost guarantee people spend a few extra seconds looking at the poster if nothing else than to figure out if "that's really Brad Pitt" and "what's that movie called?"
  • Genius. Best poster of the year.

I still think the best ad campaign belongs to Forgetting Sarah Marshall with their vicious billboards.
  • AlbertBrodsky
Bah! This movie has such an interesting premise that is completely absent in their marketing. Let's just put pretty boy up on a poster and hope he sells himself... which he probably will.
  • Patrick O'Riley
Are we calling every headshot poster Apatow-esque now? When did we decide this?
  • Donivan
    Nice .Works well.
  • mikem
Unlike avid /film readers and followers of movies as close as we, the average moviegoer is a moron. I like it but understand if Mr. and Mrs. Epic Movie don't get it.
  • Klaus Kinski
I dont want to disillusion all of you, but i collected movie poster back in the 90ties and many of them (universal or paramount posters, cant remember) had one normal side and the backside was backwards like in this case.
so maybe its just a stupid cinema worker who mad a mistake.
  • Zach
Klaus, if you look at the poster, it says on the bottom "Christmas Day" from left to right, not backwards. So this is how the poster is meant to be seen.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
I like it but I agree that there needs to be some reverse aging signs in the visual elements of the poster beyond the text or else it's not going to make much sense. I mean, the advertising for Ben B. hasn't soaked the general public in the concept of the film enough for people to understand this poster.

I'm sure there's some sort of creative middle ground that would still be subtle without a tagline hinting at the process, and still keep the simplicity of the poster. Maybe a series of photographs, with recognizable time periods and fashions in them showing Benjamin button in each, but upon closer observation you notice that the photos that seem closer to the present have Ben looking younger and the older, sepia tones prints have him looking older. Something like that, where the idea still doesn't klonk you over the head but draws more interest in the imagery beyond Brad Pitt's straight up face.
  • just saying
I think his nose is growing by the second. YIKES! It looks horrible and it's too bad they couldn't get a better actor.
  • Roberto
Can't wait to see the movie, but this is probably the worst poster I've seen in recent memory. I like Brad okay, but I wish DF had hired a different lead actor for this film. He's like Tom Cruise (without all the crazy) in that you cannot forget it is him in any film.

Hey look, it's Brad Pitt doing stuff!
  • noticed something
it may be the poor photo quality, but i feel like there is a subtle difference looking at the two halves of brad's face. if you only look at the left, he looks younger, and older on the right. it may just be the way his face is, but since age progresses gradually it could be deliberate.
  • Andrew
Not Apatow-esque at all. Just a head shot. Come on.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
Is it possible this is one of those lenticular hologram posters or something?
  • Roberto
@ noticed something: That would make sense cuz this would be his "middle point" in the reverse chronology of his life in the film. For some reason I thought that too, but then dismissed it.
  • Meli
I like the backwards writing but I'm a fan of the head shot, stare you down photo. Still, it will get peoples who aren't aware of the movie attentions.
  • Klaus Kinski
    You are right Zach
  • Chromey
I love Fincher's high minded design ideals.
  • Andy
lol! very clever i like it
  • YoungZe
I agree with J.D. This one just looks boring.
  • edog
"Benjamin Button" is neck-and-neck with "Australia" for crap Oscar-bait I eagerly anticipate skipping. Instant pudding generates more interest than this poster.
  • .fo eltit eht daer nac I retsop a yllaniF
  • Seriously though on the day of I'll say "can I have a ticket for nottoB fo esaC suoiruC ehT"
  • trazadone
Early reviews have suggested that this film is a mess and moves at a glacial pace.
  • PlantPage55
God damn. Apatow didn't invent shooting a character from the shoulders up. If you can make ANY argument about it, and I think it's a stretch anyway, you could say Apatow patented the "awkward head shot"

But the argument is a stupid one anyway. A head shot of an innocent looking Carrell - then a head shot of Seth Rogen. And that's it. Big whoop. If "Funny People" has the same poster then you're on to something.

Superbad? A full-body shot of it's main characters. Yes, that sounds very specific to Apatow productions....give me a break.
  • Rory
shoulda put an old brad pitt on it
or him in front of the mirror flexing his guns (or lack there of) as an old child...
    but still not too bad.
  • Chris
This poster is supposed to be displayed side-by-side with the not-backwards Cate Blanchett version for it to really have a good effect, per instructions of WB.
  • AJ
i know no one is goning to respond to this but i saw one that was like a banner made to look like two posters together and the christmas day was backwards on brad pitt's
  • It's cool
Enjoy creating new styles and upload it to www.uploaded.tv
  • Mae
I just saw it in my movie theatre this morning and thought it was backward at first until I saw that "Christmas Day" was correct. I thought it was brilliant! I can't wait to see it!
