This Week in DVD is a column that compiles all the latest info regarding new DVD releases, sales, and exclusive deals from stores including Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Fry’s.

Please don’t take the commentary on the movies and TV shows too seriously, as they’re meant not to be reviews but rather previews that include the general thoughts and ramblings of a twice-committed DVD addict. In regards to movies and shows the author hasn’t seen, the DVD release is placed in its respective category based on critic and audience response. Those who find that approach questionable are welcome to leave a comment stating their thoughts, and we’ll be happy to ignore it.

HELLBOY II: THE GOLDEN ARMY
(Available as single-disc and 3-Disc Special Editions)
As much as critics may have loved Hellboy II, I felt strangely alone when proclaiming amongst fellow movie geeks that it was one of my favorite releases of 2008. Nobody was claiming it was a bad movie, but audiences just weren’t all that enthusiastic about it. This is a shame since, much like the first film, this sequel managed to flawlessly combine creative and visually stunning action sequences (with a strong focus on practical effects over CGI), cool characters, and a well-told storyline that wouldn’t have been nearly as interesting in another filmmaker’s hands. The difference, though, is that all these things are handled even better the second time around. Hopefully it’ll build a stronger following on DVD.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single disc includes an audio commentary (with director Guillermo del Toro), another audio commentary (with cast members Jeffrey Tambor, Selma Blair & Luke Gross), Set Visits, Troll Market Tour with Guillermo del Toro, Zinco Epilogue Animated Comic, and deleted scenes. The 3-disc DVD includes both the single disc extras and Hellboy: In Service of the Demon, Prologue, Production Workshop, Pre-Production Vault, Marketing Campaign, Script, and a digital copy of the film.

KUNG FU PANDA
(Available as single-disc and 2-Pack with Secrets of the Furious Five)
I don’t think anyone could’ve predicted such a silly-looking movie being as incredibly entertaining and, dare I say it, intelligent as this. Cleverly parodying the kung fu film genre, Kung Fu Panda manages to provide an easy-to-understand storyline for kids that also plays on the clichés older audiences are accustomed to seeing with such a predictable storyline. It’s the rare non-Pixar film that finds the perfect balance for children and adults, complete with surprisingly badass action sequences.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single disc includes an audio commentary and featurettes (’Meet The Cast’, ‘The Tech of Kung Fu Panda’, ‘The World of Panda: Conservational International Piece’). SUKIYAKI WESTERN DJANGO
I always feel like I should like Takashi Miike’s films more than I actually do. With Sukiyaki Western Django, I found myself struggling through the borderline incomprehensible storyline and unapologetically self-referential attempts to pay homage to the western film genre, while also enjoying the hell out of the beautiful cinematography and supremely epic shoot outs and battle sequences. And yet, even after saying “holy shit that was awesome” to myself for about the fifteenth time, I somehow still found myself occasionally getting bored.

THIS CHRISTMAS
Obviously I’m not the target audience for this film (read: I’m white), but as a fan of Mekhi Phifer, Delroy Lindo and Idris Elba (who plays Stringer Bell on The Wire), I may just end up checking it out anyway. If you’re in a holiday mood and are looking for a good movie to watch with the family (and don’t mind dealing with the expected genre clichés), this looks like it could make for a heartwarmingly pleasant rental.

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS
(Available as single-disc and 2-Disc Special Editions)
I would love to bitch-slap George Lucas. His eagerness to destroy the legacies of the franchises fans hold so dear to their hearts is sickening. This has never been more evident than with The Clone Wars, a CGI precursor to a Cartoon Network TV show that was originally meant to air on television. Now, I haven’t yet seen the film (the horrible reviews haven’t offered a whole lot of incentive), but only a real douchebag would take something that’s clearly suited specifically for TV and force it into theatres, thus fooling unaware audience members into emptying their pockets for what they’re assuming is a legitimate theatrical release.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: The single disc includes only an audio commentary, while the two-disc includes that as well as featurettes (’The Clone Wars: The Untold Stories’, ‘The Voices of The Clone Wars’, ‘ The New Score’, ‘Webdocs’), deleted scenes, concept/production art gallery, a Hologram Memory Challenge, and a digital copy of the film.

THE PERFECT HOLIDAY
Whereas This Christmas represents a respectable effort geared towards urban audiences, The Perfect Holiday shows us the exact opposite. I caught about fifteen minutes of the film in theaters while waiting for another movie to start, and was appalled by just how bland, unfunny and poorly made it was. Movies like this are the reason films featuring primarily African American casts struggle to get any respect in the film world. Tyler Perry isn’t helping either.
Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: Filmmakers’ commentary, a featurette (’Wish List: A Perfect Holiday in the Making’), and video diaries (’7 Days on the Set of Perfect Holiday’).

  • Both Hellboy II and Kung Fu Panda were smaller scale triumphs of their own respective genres. Great stuff.
  • jon
skip clone wars? you haven't seen it how can you bash lucas without seeing it...it wasnt the best but it was a fun movie especially if you have a kid with you.....im buying it but i'd atleast give it a "rent it"
  • The Burg
    that HEllboy collector's set owns.
I'm gonna import one right now!
  • Jarryd Wilken
I have seen half the movies on here this week and it is spot on. Both Hellboy II and Kung Fu Panda are great movies. And Star Wars: The Clone Wars is so far the worst Star Wars movie ever made. It was only made to introduce children to the Star Wars universe but they had to butcher both the score and the story to do so. My thought is if you want to making another Star Wars movie make it darker.
  • MP
Clone Wars was actually very entertaining. No it's not a "Star Wars Movie", it's a cartoon pilot. But the action sequences were lots of fun, and for a longtime fan, it was just good to see some of these characters I didn't realize I'd missed since Episode III. So at least give it a rent before you say "skip it"
  • Marty J
"I would love to bitch-slap George Lucas. His eagerness to destroy the legacies of the franchises fans hold so dear to their hearts is sickening."

That is, by far, the most pathetic thing I have read today. You would actually attack another human being with physical violence just because they made a bunch of movies you didn't like? That would make you a child; a spoiled, hateful little child.

It never ceases to amaze me how you people genuinely think he deliberately does these things just to annoy you. It just goes to show how self-obsessed all you hateful little fanboy nerds are.
  • sideshowRaheem
STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS is actully worth a rental it was intended to be a TV movie and if it had stayed that way I don't think the reviewers would have destroyed it like they did. It's not great but it isn't terriable ether, the TV show itself is also not bad.
  • David
Everyone I know who saw Hellboy II thought it was lame, particularly in comparison to the original. It was more Disney than Del Toro, which is probably why so many mainstream critics liked it.
  • Thankyoufor
i wasnt big on hellboy II i felt the bad guy was trying to hard to be Tom Cruise

kung fu panda is amazing though
  • leona
dear lord, hellboy two was horrible...about the only semi-enjoyable parts were the troll market scenes, if even.
If Hellboy wasn't in hellboy, i think the movie would have been ten times better. all the cheesy one liners...give me freakin break....those sucked whether or not that was his character..and selma blair is so much hotter than hellboy, i cant believe her character is going to reproduce with him. i'm angry because i actually enjoyed the first one, and this one was such a disappointment..like you'd think since they were building up the golden army so much that you'd see them destroy stuff and kick total ass...
but kudos to the pans labyrinth crew, the creatures were phenom!
  • skippy
i think the biggest handicap given to Hellboy II was the release date: one week before The Dark Knight.

i would assume there were complications that prevented the studio from moving the release date once they became aware of TDK's date, but they really should have made the change. the success of the film was heavily dependent on how strong it did in its first week of release, since it would surely be trampled by TDK's opening the week after.
  • Rob
am i missing something, or is the most significant disk, "Band of Brothers" on blu-ray mysteriously missing from this list. And considering its dirt cheap for 55 right now, i think that is something that should be commented on.
  • Oi Vey
    @ Marty J

I would just taunt Lucas and tell how he sucks.

Anyway, with Tyler Perry, I agree; I've seen bits and pieces of his films and..I don't know what to think. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but I feel like these could be better. Instead, they kinda rely on stereotypes. In turn, it makes all of the characters look dumb instead of embracing the black community. But what do i know?
  • Star Wars: The Clone Wars = Buy It, or at least Rent It. Also, the Cartoon Network TV show is awesomely awesome
  • fabescore
"but as a fan of Mekhi Phifer"......... REALLY!?!?!? Well at least that fucker has ONE fan....
  • pangloss
yeah, hellboy 2 sucked... very underwhelming. and the demon human and fish elf love scenes were both disturbing and stupidly sappy. really it was the story as much as anything else that was the problem with that film... i and the people i was with were just bored of this movie. i know the critics are sucking del toro's dick after pan's labrinth, but this movie was the most overrated film of the year.
  • Pill
Hellboy 2 had a god-awful storyline. It was pretty and interesting to look at it, but there wasn't much substance or character backing it up.
  • 790
Hey Marty its call creative writing,,, you should lighten up a tad.

I liked Hellboy2. Picked up the single disc copy...

Its funny how Lucas released Star Wars last week in all new packaging so that it would share the shelf with this clone war cartoon. (Shameless)
  • Oi Vey
I think Hellboy 2 was visually impressive. It harkens back to the old days of Jim Henson. But story wise, it's a great concept. But it was TOO comical at times. The tone of the movie was waaay off; it gets too silly then it gets to melodramatic.
  • What
Kung Fu Panda was def. one of my fav of the year. Seriously amazing.

Hellboy 2 on the other hand? One of the huge let downs.
  • Captain Awesome
I think Del Toro is falling in love with the idea of humanizing Hellboy almost too much.

The whole relationship between Liz really didn't need to go that far. And I agree with what Oi Vey said. It's visually great, but the story is starting to get too "soft" and Hellboy is losing that edge I love in the comics.
  • What
I don't know Awesome, everyone's entitled to their own opinion but I have to differ on the visual aspects if Hellboy 2.

It seems it's getting to the point where Del Toro is just obsessed with making any creature have multiple eyes, or eyes in their hands.

His vision, while unique, gets old fast.

Not to be biased, but even looking at the old Star Wars films...I still fall instantly in love with the creatures, same with LOTR.

    Just my two cents.
  • 790
@what, can I call you Wot?
    Who's on first,,,,

    Its called eye-candy. Ghssseessh
  • Captain Awesome
    What,

I understand. But I love Del Toro's take on monsters. The designs themselves don't bother me. It's got this organic H. P. Lovecraft thing going on. Which I love. But some of the artists he does employ like Wayne Barlowe is more of an influence on those creature designs.

I just think the visuals are amazing. But the story needs to be "snappier". I want more Hellboy from the comics, not emo Hellboy.
  • What "is Crackin"
There 790, while I did not understand your attempt a joke, I changed my name for you.

    @ Awesome,

Okay, well like I said, to each their own. I'll admit, while well crafted (physically) the designs still don't floor me. I'm as huge as a fan of Lovecraft as the next, but I still think Del Toro has a way to go.

    THAT said.

I will agree with you on this. If they even incorporate 10% more of the comics, the movie would be 10 times better. Thats what I came into HB2 expecting, shit like the comics.

And I left with a frown on my face. I LOVE Mignola's work and would only hope they'd bring more of that.
  • Captain Awesome
It's what im hoping for a third movie from Del Toro. I hope he goes bigger in the sense of really carving him out more like the Mignola version.

I want Hellboy to just throw down with badasses, be covered in blood and light up a smoke. Plus smart-ass remarks. I don't want to deal with Hellboy worrying if his half demon/human kid has diapers or not.
  • “I would love to bitch-slap George Lucas. His eagerness to destroy the legacies of the franchises fans hold so dear to their hearts is sickening.”

The award for overreaction goes to...

And Skippy, when would you have released it? August I guess? It would have gotten owned no matter when it opened. At least it got to #1.

Dont listen to them. Dont buy Kung Fu Panda.

Wow, adam quigley or what ever is total fucktard. YES, I didnt like clone wars that much, but I at least WATCHED IT before passing judgement. and for fucks sakes, its a cartoon tv-movie, not some oscar potential.
seriously /film who the fuck is this guy?
  • Woah, Panda, a little hostile aren't we? And apparently you completely ignored the column's intro. You also clearly don't listen to the /Filmcast, which I co-host. That might help answer the question of "who the fuck" I am.
  • 790
Hey Panda,,, clone wars = crap,,, I could tell from the odorous craptactic trailer...
(Never watched the pile of steaming crap, and never will)
I tend to step over crap, if you need to taste it to make sure its crap well that's your right,,, ;-)

I wish I had the money to buy all the clone wars dvds and burn them out in the parking lot for laughs... (If I can just get that raise?)

a little hostile for a mod who should probably try to keep the peace, but honestly adam, is the buy it rent it skip it categories necassary, and not to be a dick but "who the fuck you are" isn't important at all, just because your on this site doesn't mean you know better than anyone else about movies, especially if you havent seen them, and honestly your little disclaimer acknowledges that you know your going to get heat for putting an opinion on something you don't know, so why bother?

    and 790

your post deserves to be burned for laughs, its just ridiculous
  • 790
    @jon,,,
I was just making a colorfull point on how I could tell Star Wars Clone wars is a piece of crap... Burn it for all I care,,, if you want to defend that film so be it. I'm only providing my opinion...

I have to say that I've seen a lot of ppl comment on this weekly thread since Adam started it a few months back, and a lot of ppl get way to defensive.
Adam's taken alot of shit, and I can see where he's coming from. This is a news thread not a popularity contest...
There are a ton of ppl that don't like Hellboy 2, you don't see me lashing out at them,,,
We should all try to focus on the dvd topic not the drama that goes with what you like vs what I like...
    ^
Adam I have to say besides this bs that seems to clog up the comment section , I love this column and I look forward to it as my source of dvd release info...
  • leona
    i concur 790....but..........hellboy 2 sucks!
  • 790
Lol Leona, I'm a sucker for eye candy.
  • jon,

I never said I knew more about movies than anyone else. My comment about co-hosting the /Filmcast wasn't meant as an act of arrogance, it was meant as a to-the-point response. That guy had the gall to question my involvement on the site in a particularly self-righteous manner, so I wanted to demonstrate that my contributions extend far beyond simply writing a DVD column each week.

And I added the disclaimer only after people started getting up in arms about every little off-hand comment I made about a movie they liked, clearly taking the whole thing way too seriously. This hasn't changed a whole lot, it seems.

Yes, I could get rid of the "Buy it, Rent it, Skip it" system, but Peter likes it, and since this is his site, I'd rather take a little shit from over-enthusiastic commenters than bother him about it any more than I already have.
  • leona
hahaha yea 790, but hey, i did give kudos to the PL crew....
but adam, jon and 790 stop bitching....girls like me dont post comments on slashfilm to hear a bunch of vagines bitch at eachother. this is my sanctuary, please dont ruin it.
    hellboy 2 sucks.
  • duca
I personally loved Hellboy II. I hadn't seen it yet and I couldn't find a copy of Sukiyaki Western Django so I bought it. It was a EXCELLENT movie. Yes, some of the acting was a bit stiff but the over all feeling of the movie was great. I especially loved the scenes with the Prince. Watching him fight was just beautiful. The death of the Earth Elemental was astounding as well. It was, however, far more fantasy then comic book movie which might have disappointed or confused some.

*shruggs* I don't see what people hated so much about it. I was entertained the whole time and I came out with a smile on my face so what's the big deal? Not everything has to be the bloody Dark Knight.

HELLBOY II SUCKS ASS BROTHERS! Why does 99% of every sequel have to suck so bad. They really lost the feeling of the first movie. The first is more believable in the sense that you were convinced the characters were authentic and not too contrived. There was wry humor and one liners during fight scenes that made you think HB was such a bad ass and laugh without losing the edge. The sequel just turned into some orgy of LOTR's and the Princess Bride. I half expected Billy Crystal to show up as the droll troll and the Night's who say Nim battle HB for entry.

Cornball to the max writing, that seemed more geared to a bad SNL skit than an action movie. HB fighting while swinging a baby on his tail and jumping fifty feet from street signs did about as much good for his rep as yoda flying around like a ball of fury doing kung fu in that Star Wars movie. If they added Jar Jar Binks as the fifth agent it would have fit nicely with the whole feel of the movie.

It's like a really pretty cake that tastes like shit. What's the point fella's?

The review, 'this sequel managed to flawlessly combine creative and visually stunning action sequences (with a strong focus on practical effects over CGI),' is garbage. I mean if I were twelve and never saw the first movie I would think that.

As for every sequel, they know about how much it will gross before it's even made so they throw every bit of CGI at it. It's really heartbreaking to see such quality effects and design get so overused and go into such a piece of trash story/screenplay. HB was harcore. I was hooked. I actually bought the DVD and I rarely buy any new movies. I'm always asked about HB1 because most people never heard of it.
It's almost obscure. Everyone did however hear about HB2. Now I'm a little embarrassed. It's like Resident Evil. Awesome first, and each sequel more and more off base. I wouldn't watch them again if you paid me.

It's like listening to early Metallica become "woah, woah, woahhh...nothing else matters" an album later. You Hollywood people are so out of touch.

Why would it be so hard to just keep it simple and have a kick ass movie with effects that keep it in our POV perspective instead of panning out to see thousands of whatevers: EDIT COPY EDIT PASTE EDIT COPY EDIT PASTE...just like clone wars (live action not cartoon).

LOTR's is a perfect example of a well written and balanced movie that shows only what it needs to to convey the point.

Remember those old school movies that never showed the monster like The Thing and Aliens or even Jaws for that matter(mentioned earlier). You saw a glimpse for just a second and the rest of the movie you knew there was something out there. You didn't need computers spewing out renderings of smoke and acid flicking tongues everywhere. WTF is wrong with you people. Do I have to do EVERYTHING myself? No one has any chance to use their own imagination with every single pimple of the hero monsters ass showing on the bigscreen.

I have to go and direct movies now so I won't have to see another great movie strangled by McCorporate greed and pansy ass writing and directing.

Star Wars ruled because it was unknown actors, limited effects and believable characters. Jaws ruled for the same reasons. All notable movies are this way.

Doesn't matter how much money you have or how popular the first movie was...
if you don't have a good story and down to earth common sense you will always fail.

I can probably buy the DVD HB2 less than the cost of a disc to burn it.

You know a movie is bad when it's not even worth copying...

    R.I.P. Hellboy

    I'LL MISS YOU!
