Twilight Fans Start Mini Riot in San Francisco

Last week, I received a phone call from my local Summit Entertainment publicity rep, informing me that the stars of Twilight were going on the road for an autograph tour to publicize the release of the film adaptation next week. I posted about the appearances here. Before I got off the phone I warned my local rep, “You understand this is going to get out of control right?”

You see, Twilight star Robert Pattinson was going to appear at a small Hot Topic store in the Stonestown Galleria, a mall just miles south of downtown San Francisco (but still technically in the city limits). I explained to my nice local publicist about my experience at Comic Con, dealing with the hordes of Twilight fangirls and the ::shudder:: Twilight moms ::shudder::. She told me that they expected 300-500 people to show up, and I was shocked. That can’t be. It must be more, right?

I have seen the Twilight phenomenon first hand. My first posting about the movie spawned over 1,500 comments in under 24 hours, causing major damage to our web servers. But some have speculated that the Twilight fanbase is not as big as you might think. It’s the whole “mob mentality” rule of the internet, where a large vocal group can have an expansive presence, and in affect, seem much larger than they actually are. Take Snakes on a Plane for instance. The reasoning is that the Twilight books have sold far far far less than the Harry Potter novels. But the early advance ticket numbers are much bigger than expected.

And that appearance tonight in San Francisco? It’s been canceled. Over 3,000 Twilight fans, mostly teenage girls, showed up at the Stonestown Galleria early this morning. That is more than 10 times the amount of people that police officials were expecting. Apparently a few of the teenage fans were trampled, and one girl reportedly broke her nose. The event was cancelled for safety reasons. Some fans had traveled with their families from Los Angeles, Hawaii and Arizona. Watch a video report from the mall on TMZ.

  • this Twilight mania is f--king insane. and I refuse to read the books...
  • A1234567654
Well, you don`t know what you are doing if you refuse to read those books...
  • Bast
Just because he hasn't read the books doesn't mean he can't criticize the rabid, batsh-t insane fans who run around beating people up because they love the book so much. It doesn't take knowledge of the books themselves to realize that Twilight is just a book, and doesn't warrant people getting hurt over it.

i WAS there and it wasnt as bad as what this says... IT WAS WORSE. i talked to security after and found out it was horrible. first we had the people who tried to stay in a RV from texas....did they not see that edward was going to be in texas tomorrow? then there was the people forming so early a mom took in to herself to start a list of names and numbering people, which was thorwn out the door since she was not athorized to do so. and then the screaming and running started. people started running towards the front of the mall while a man from hot topic was on a mega phone telling everyone to form A LINE, and then thats when people were screaming and yelling. then two lines were formed which then the police got involved. the two lines were formed into one....then we had to turn into a long double up line so we had to push back the line yet the mob didnt want to move from the front, thats when we found out a purse was stolen, a visa card was stolen,
shoes were being thorwn, parents were yelling, ids were screaming, then the girl got her nose broken. AND THEN thats when we heard there was a little girl stuck in the mob whou couldnt breathe and passed out and the mob wasnt letting the ambulance or ANYONE get to her ...NO ONE HELPED HER! so then that was the final straw, but no one left easily. lots waited till the police got involved and told EVERYONE to leave. . . but then the mall finally got open and the running started...the same thing happened at hot topic and a long line formed down the mall to go into hot topic to buy stuff... yet the staff said they were not going to sell those shirts. also shoes were being thorwn and a girls neck was cut up do to peope in the mob trying to pull others back ...they pulled on her necklace cutting her neck up.

its insane and im glad it was cancelled. i stood in the line and witnessed the worst of the female fans, and their parents! The mob was mostly full of the younger crowd and guess how many of their parents just stood by watching??? like 40!! just WATCHING! none of the parents helped! i was so disappointed in the fans that didnt listen to simple requests! if they would have listened and their parents were responsible the meet and greet might still be on!

thanks for your time Eli Nicole, Vallejo CA

That's not a riot. That's one of the biggest lesbian pillow fights waiting to happen.
  • jawmuncher
Don't know what the huge fuss is about.
    The books are horrible.
  • jeez, and people were bitching about TDK's more passionate fanbase.

as anyone who's dated teen girls will tell you (i mean, you know, back in high school; not recently), never underestimate their sheer volcanic rage and power.
  • Eric B.
Seriously. A mini riot over an ACTOR who's in the movie about the book? What is so special? They read the book so they know what happens. Seriously. Too big of a fuss over NOTHING important
  • Captain Awesome
Pretty sure Harry Potter fans are more insane. I remember kids in tears when some stores ran out copies of the books.

Who cries over a book? More importantly I need to get some of these books to get these kids to do my bidding.
  • Zinc
You know how I know you're gay? You read Twilight (or soon, saw it).
  • @ captain awesome

i cry over the giving tree. and ted nugent's latest: ted, white, and blue. that beautiful man . . .
  • That's insane. I'm not surprised, but still. People get nuts about the craziest things. I remember when my kids were little and the tickle me Elmo insanity was going on. I watched moms throw punches to get a box away from someone else.

I think what people who haven't read the books don't realize is that this story is very emotional, and the way its written, you feel like your the one experiencing the story. The language may be simple, but it grabs those of us who have read it and doesn't let go. Hense, the intensity of the fans who transfer their feelings for the characters to the actors. Mind you, some people will get out of hand no matter what they've fixated on.
  • Meli
Today was a disgusting display of behavior and a lot of those stupid kids are trying to blame it on Hot Topic and the mall for not being better organized. Well, sure they should have expected more than a few hundred people, but that is no excuse for the way those kids acted. Some teens and adults really suck.
  • Josh
    Shudder* Shudder*
  • Dac
Sci Fi Fans would never have resorted to this. They'd have had plastic swords to keep women at bay.
  • Delta Assault
Sounds like a recreation of Dead Rising...
  • Ali
That's fucking ridiculous. This kind of obsession makes me sad to say I'm a fan of these books.
  • Steelo
That's a far cry from New Jack City
  • Helen
I believe the word is "shudder" and not "shutter"...
  • egyptnation
    what a bunch of douches
  • ChampCheyne
Twilight fans cant even out buy Bond fans. lame
  • Mariel
I was going to go, but then I saw you had to buy a t-shirt for $30, which I thought was stupid and now seeing this!! Boy was I lucky to being smart
  • Dan Berry
i love reading the comments on things like this. lol
    super hype is hilarious.
  • Dr. Acula
What the fuck is wrong with these people?
  • Eli Nicole

  • helicopters
peter you silly goose, it's ::shudder:: -- a shutter is something you close or use to take a picture.
  • Rosario
Thanks Eli for the recap, adds a whole new level of craziness to this story.

And I have never seen Harry Potter fans go this crazy over an actor, I even went to the midnight release of HP7 and it was calm and everyone was extra friendly. But I would much rather have someone next to me crying then someone trying to run me over. Oh, is it mean that I laughed when I read about this, something about crazy moms and daughters acting other crazy moms and daughters over some guy, lol.

So Peter, how much do we have pay you for you to see a midnight screening of Twilight. I can only imagine what you would write about.
  • rachel summers
@ Delta Assault: LMFAO! get the shopping cart!

what a bunch of hormoned-out morons. they all deserved what they got for loving a such a shitty book so much.
  • YoungZe
    Haha. You all deserve this.
  • Claribel
Saw this posted in one of the comments on TMZ, thought I post it over here too.

I was actually there this morning. I was there from 3 AM to around 9 AM. The cops did nothing to help whatsoever and now they're trying to blame the crowd. The fact is that they had ONE Rent-A-Cop to begin with. Two women who were there since 11 the night before from LA, organized a sign in list to see if it would help. I still have my number on my hand(137). The cop and Hot Topic were debating whether or not to use this and then I guess one person sprinted to the front. All I saw were a bunch of people running and then a swarm, so obviously we followed. The crowd was actually not that bad, the main problem was the lack of organization and security. The real police didn't show up for a while and they still didn't do anything. All they told us to do was to "MOVE BACK" which is impossible when being crushed into a planter box. There was no room to move back whatsoever. Finally it seemed like they would be able to do it in a somewhat orderly fashion. They started taking people in and I guess some stupid pushy fans in the FRONT ruined it for everyone. The cops gave up, canceled the event, and resorted to physically pushing us back into other people. I applaud the women from LA who tried to organize what the cops didn't. They should have honored that list because we all were there first. Some people straggled in around 7 and just formed in the back, becoming stone and refusing to move. The excuse that they didn't expect as many people to come is just ridiculous and absurd. If you have a total of 500 wristbands, you should expect AT LEAST that many and typically two times that much. Blame it on Hot Topic and the cops, not on the crowd.

  • StarBlazer101
Those Twilight fans need to learn some manners form us, more civilized, Harry Potter fans.
  • Arch Stanton
    hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
  • EL Bart-O
You think that's bad, I had to take my 12 year old sister to buy Hanna Montana concert tickets. They were sold out by the time we got to the box office. All Hell broke loose! The sight of claws and fangs tearing and shredding human flesh *shudder*
  • Eli Nicole
the whole thing about the list was that it WAS NOT organized by hot topic employees or the manager or the MALL SECURITY. there was no rent a cop there ....the mall security guard and i spoke....well the assistant manager to them and they were pre praed all ngiht. there was FOUR of them. They did not use the list because it was NOT AUTHORIZED and hot topic told everyone they can begin to line up at 7am for the past week. it was not hot topics fault. you cannot just make a list on your own without getting an approval by the security or the employees first.
  • emily
I'm so glad I didn't go to this.
  • Dave
If my kid was passed out and no one would give him/her space, I would start punching faces
  • Craig M.
    Loonatics. All of them.
  • Craig M.
Oops. Its spelled Lunatics. My bad.
  • Jackson
    Wow, what a joke.
  • Joe
    Wait a second.

    This was in the morning?

People let their kids skip school for this bullshit?

While this was going on, I was in my AP classes and actually doing honest work. It's good to know a lot of these parents know their priorities...
  • Allynd Dudnikov
Hot Topic + Twilight? Uh Oh, Emo Double trouble!
  • Those of you who think that the Harry Potter fan base is crazier, think again. I wrote a bad review in my school newspaper for Breaking Dawn (and STILL acknowledged that the other books were good!) and I got kidnapped and dragged behind the dumpsters by some other Twilight fans. Tears? If the books had run out at the BD signing, there would have been a massive riot. I know that two girls were saying that if they ran out of BD books when they got to the front of the line, they would storm the back room and burn down the store. I wish I was kidding.
  • Iron Matt
    This is disgusting.
  • Sari
"and one girl reportedly broke her nose" hahaha funniest thing I've read all day.
  • Quan
    Easiest Solution: teargas. Oh yeah.
  • Eli Nicole
and yet it was uncancelled and 500 little girls got to meet him .... insane
  • lacie
I waited and got the shirt.. and at that point they were telling people if you got the shirt then they would give you the wrist band to come back at 6pm and get your unsigned poster... so we did and they tricked people, he was there and we got to meet him if we had our wristband! he isbeautiful! lol
