Last month, we reported that Paul Andrew Williams had been mentioned as a possibility to direct 28 Months Later, the sequel to the Fresnadillo-helmed 28 Weeks Later, which was the second part in the 28 saga. Now comes word from scifi.com [via AICN] that Danny Boyle, the director of 28 Days Later and of the upcoming Slumdog Millionaire (my favorite film of the year so far) might be interested in directing 28 Months. At a group interview in Beverly Hills, CA, Boyle explained that he already had an idea for the third movie:

I’ve got an idea for it, so I can’t really tell you any more than that at the moment, but hopefully that might happen.

Although scripting on the third film has not yet begun, Boyle said he would potentially be interested in directing the film:

I’d certainly like to…I feel the idea is quite a strong idea, and it could well involve directing it. Yeah, absolutely.

As the title of this post might indicate, work on the film is so preliminary that it’s all pretty much rumor at this point. Nonetheless, I’m heartened by the thought of him returning to the series. What Boyle’s current idea for the third film is will have to remain a mystery, along with why apocalyptic events in this universe only seem to occur in intervals of 28.

Cool, 28 Days was great, and I thought Weeks was pretty good but not as great. I really hope Boyle does this, also Slumdog Millionare was great.

both films were great, but i'd care more about the series if there were some continuity to it; like if the 3 survivors from the first film, or the children from the 2nd were followed. making it an actual sequel, rather than just another outing in this universe, would make it so much better. especially if they brought back cillian, to let us know where that character has been.

also, they should properly end this series with the 3rd. no loose ends, no 'credits rolling' suprises - bring it to a completion, so the 28 world can go out with dignity/integrity.

Maybe the significance of the number 28 will be revealed.

Maybe it goes wide on Christmas? But it doesn't need to be released any earlier than Christmas because Christmas is the last day a film can be released to qualify for the oscars.

The sequel was pretty lame. Maybe he can make the second sequel watchable.
  • MrMad2001
    Count me in.

Mikey M. is pretty lame. The sequel rocked and if Boyle's on board with the threeque, I am so there.
  • 28 weeks later was awesome, i hope this movie continues to kick ass like the last 2

28 Weeks later was much more a horror movie with the whole father-hunting thing. I hate to compare it to the Starship Troopers franchise, but they did the same kind of take with the sequel, ST2 was very much more horror and schloky sci fi camp. But IMO, ST3:Marauder turned it around, while it wasn't as good, came back to outlandish sci-fi and snark. Maybe 28 Months Later will do the same. I think Weeks holds up as a better sequel to Days than ST2 does to ST1, but I'm still hoping Months is better than Weeks as ST3 was.

    Does that make sense?

I also thought I'd heard a small point about the infestation spreading to Russia for this installment?

28 Days is a classic in my opinion.

28 Weeks was horrible. Just a bunch of mindless violence, and I enever cared for ANY of the characters.

If the same director of 28 Days does the sequel, I'm in the theater.
  • MrMad2001
    Matt. No.

Boyle is an amazing director. Anything he touches is gold.

I liked the 2nd one... not as much as the first but I felt they were two different styles of movies. The first was far more suspenseful. The second felt more action oriented.
  • theuglyspirit
The second's immense mediocrity wore me out. So I'll wait until I hear this solid idea of his and if it's cool, then you can count me in.

Maybe it will be about underwater zombies.
  • I loved 28 Days but was pretty disappointed in 28 Weeks. I'm hopeful about 28 Months if Boyle is back on board.

A lunar month is roughly 28 days, wonder if that was the reason for the first title.
  • axxon
Yes! Mr. Boyle, please, return to the director's chair and save the saga!
  • Ryan
I'm having a hard time picturing this.
If THAT many people got infected after only 28 Days, I find it hard to believe that there's really that many real people left after 2.3 years.
  • edog
Eh. 28 Weeks:28 Days as Jaws II:Jaws. Both sequels kept some of the best aspects of the original films, but each paled by comparison.

Make another Boyle-zombie sequel, and the zombie may be inside the park, if you know what I mean. And if you don't, I dare you to rent Jaws III.

if Doyle is in the director's chair i feel it should be a promising film. Weeks later was mindless American ADD violence, while Days kept it smart. If Boyle is exited about the idea, I'm all for it.
  • Will
28 Hours Later. Would be ten times better.

    orange cinema,

The original ending actually had only two survivors (Jim died). With that said, it's going to be hard to incorporate characters from the first film because of the inconsistencies between the American and British versions.
  • KJB=Me
What are you talking about? Jim didn't die. There was an alternate ending in which he died, but he didn't die in the actual movie. 3 SURVIVORS Jim, Selena, and Hannah they all lived.
  • 790
And I might see this film, maybe,,,?
  • KJB=Me
I think most people will agree that 28 Days Later is ultimatey superior to 28 Weeks Later. The second one was good, but the first one was better. The digital video shooting was beautiful, the camera angles and shots were amazing the music was awesome, and Cillian Murphy was such a great actor in the first one. Boyle needs to comeback to direct 28 nths Later and end this thing once and for all.
