According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chris Rock will be teaming up with Sidney Kimmel Entertainment and Screen Gems for a re-imagining of Frank Oz’s 2007 British comedy Death at a Funeral. Rock will produce and star in the film, in addition to co-writing the script with Ayesha Carr (an Everybody Hates Chris veteran). Although Oz’s original was well-received by many critics, it didn’t get very much traction with theatergoers, drawing only a niche audience. The new film will have a primarily African-American cast and focus on a funeral that “devolves into a debacle of misplaced cadavers, indecent exposure and family secrets.”

In general, I’m skeptical of remakes but there have been exceptions where the newer film has surprised with its inventiveness. Positive examples can be found in the category of remakes of foreign films (e.g. The Departed, The Ring) or even remakes of older American films (e.g. Ocean’s 11, Invasion of the Body Snatchers) However, this news has me torn because on the one hand, Chris Rock is a great funnyman who will undoubtedly be able to mine the basic funeral scenario for comedic gold. On the other hand, it promises to strip away all the elements that made the original film what it is (namely, its British-ness, for lack of a better term). It’s also just kind of bizarre that the remake is coming hot off the heals (just one year after) the original. What do you guys think?

Well, considering that the original was an inconsequential piece of drivel, there's nothing wrong with remaking it. The script was pretty great, but Oz's direction was mediocre at best and the movie was a creative disaster. There's no way Chris Rock's version could be worse, so why not remake it? It's like adapting novels -- middling books often make for good movies, but good books frequently don't live up to the source material.

    ..................... no.

Has this ever happened to a movie that wasn't something like REC/Quarantine, which was a movie in a different launguage?

    I'm confused.

Tony Cox is going to be the midget, just you watch.

Death at a funeral was a really, really funny film. This could definitely work if handled right. If you haven't seen the original it's worth a look. Unfortunately Rock has never been able to transfer his humor to film very well but I remain hopeful that oneday the right project will fall in his lap.

stop remaking foreign films less than 5 years after they were originally release. this goes for everybody. just stop. stop it.

    stop.

Remakes are a decent idea for when studios/directors/actors run out of ideas. If Rock is so bereft of original content already that he is willing to steal something that is barely more than a year old, then I'm afraid this the is the death knell for his career.
So long. You were funny that one time.

I HATE WHEN THEY SAY URBAN THEY MEAN A BLACK VERSION

There are many elements of this story that I don't like. Firstly, I have to agree with filmkid, except with the caps lock off. Although, I didn't catch it at the cinema, I saw it on DVD and I don't particulary think that the British-ness of the film can be recreated especially by Chris Rock who seems to be an animated person. I feel also that if you have to remake a film because its British-ness wont be understood by American audiences, then there is no point in remaking the film as lose the essence of the film. I like Chris Rock but I hope he directs his talents elsewhere.

    what?
oh come on now, cant people understand an english language film and have to remake it. whats wrong with the original? i liked it.

and that goes for remaking Oldboy too, people read subtitles! not everything has to be in english (if not "american")
  • beef
WHY? What is it with People re-making a version of something that is BRAND new?
  • dave
at least theyre not remaking, monty python's holy grail... oh crap... quick someone knock on wood before the universe collapes on itself!!
  • DoctaJones
    what's the over/under on " motherf*ckers " being used?

that's what the original had that this one doesn't.... being funny without relying on language.

    * yawn * i'm still waiting for the first funny Chris Rock movie since, like, CB4
  • Steve
These "urban" movies always just devolve down into the same types of things... lots of annoying, over-the-top characters running around screaming, doing outrageous things.

    Ugh. Whatever.

    Here's an idea...

Forget about remakes. Just stop making "urban" films.

At least with a remake of a recent foreign movie you have the excuse of the obvious language barrier. But as a Brit myself I find this a little irritating. The only incident similar to this that I can recall is the remake of Fever Pitch. The UK version starring COLIN FARREL in 1997 and the U.S remake appearing in 2005 with JIMMY FALLON (incidentally both were mediocre).

That was ridiculous with an eight year gap, Death At A Funeral has just the one.

I'm thinking of making an English JUNO with Daniel Radcliffe and Keira Knightley to even the playing field!
  • Dan Palmer
*Apologies I meant FIRTH not FARREL!

I really like Chris Rock, but this is bullshit. I respect Rock for his stand up and I enjoy Everybody Hates Chris; however this idea is plain stupid. Is he out of ideas? It's as if he watched this movie and said hey, I could do that with black people.

death at a funeral should never be re-imagined. didn't it come out last year? what the frick!

it was so uncomfortably funny, that you can't recreate that feeling, especially if done by Chris Rock. won't see it if they do.
  • Sirchuggz
I honestly believe this is bull. The movie was funnier then hell, there is no reason that it should be remade. As for it being turned into an "Urban American" version I agree with filmkid that all that means is its a black version. Unfortunately alot of black actors feel that they need to piss on original versions of movies just because there wasnt a full black cast. I dont see Judd Aptow out there trying to remake any of Tyler Perry's movies. So honestly everyone enough of this black and white bull shit. Its fuc*ing 2008, we have a black president for Christ's sake. People need to learn to deal with shit and not feel like theyre being discriminated against if theyre not in a film. So in my opinion, a remake is a horrible idea.

Love the first one. Dont want to see a reworking.
