Watchmen Featurette: “Girls Kick Ass”

Myspace has a new Watchmen featurette titled “Girls Kick Ass” which takes a look at the girls of Watchmen, or more specificly: Malin Akerman (Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre II) and Carla Gugino (Sally Jupiter/Silk Spectre). We get to see some of the mother/daughter sequences in Jupiter’s Florida home, and more importantly - Akerman’s fight scene in the jail.

i'm sure i'm not the first to say this. the film looks good. it looks like snyder and company are doing the best job they can. that being said, i can't fathom how it will ever live up to the book's expectations. this would have been better served as a 10 part mini-series on HBO ala "Band of Brothers". that way, all the subtleties and nuances contained in the book, as well as the depth of storytelling could have easily been spread out, instead of crammed into a two and half hour movie. i probably will see this movie, but i am full of skepticism that i wish i could shake. unfortunately, hollywood has a poor history of translating books, especially comics, to screen (with a few exceptions of course). hopefully, i can be proven wrong.

jdrake you do realize if they went with mini series doctor Manhattan would not even look half a good as he does in this film

Does the video really have to automatically start playing?

    nelson,
i'm more concerned with the story being told properly than how good dr. manahattan looks.

Y'know, I read the book as it was being released, and ever since then I was one of the folks saying, "ah, y'know, there's too much to it, they'd have to do it as a 12-hour thing or whatever."

I finally reread it over the last couple weeks; I hadn't actually read it in 2 decades, and on a second look A) I'm amazed at how good it is, B) I'm impressed that I loved it as much as I did as a kid, given how heavy it is and C) it's not THAT unrealistic to think that they can pull this off as an extra long (2.5-3 hour) movie.

It's dense as hell, it's profound, it's wonderful, but the plot doesn't seem that over-the-top complicated. Plus, film can convey information differently -- and -- maybe more efficiently -- than a comic book can.

So they might be able to pull it off.

Everything Snyder's done has been pretty simplistic plot-wise, so I'm still not sure he isn't in over his head.

But if he understands the material, and he can pare it back intelligently, and really use every one of the 165 minutes that the studio's giving him... I dunno. He might darn well be able to do it.
