Steven Spielberg and Will Smith to Remake Oldboy?!

Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are in talks to collaborate on a remake of Chan Wook-Park’s Oldboy. Spielberg has been looking for an opportunity to work with Smith for a few years now, and this just might be the project. DreamWorks is in the process of securing the remake rights, and Spielberg is on the search for a screenwriter to develop the project. The project was originally set up with Fast and Furious director Justin Lin.

In the 2003 South Korean film, a man named Dae-Su is locked in a hotel room for 15 years without knowing why or who is holding him captive. He is suddenly released, given money, clothes and a cellphone and is sent on journey for revenge. The film won the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival and was highly praised by Jury President Quentin Tarantino. Roger Ebert called Oldboy a “powerful film not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare” … “We are so accustomed to ‘thrillers’ that exist only as machines for creating diversion that it’s a shock to find a movie in which the action, however violent, makes a statement and has a purpose.” It definitely has one of the best side-scrolling action scenes I’ve ever seen (included below).

Praised for it’s intense visuals and twisted story, Oldboy was met with positive reviews in the States, and is currently getting an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and an 8.3 user rating on IMDB, for a #117 placement on the top 250 films of all time. The film is also the subject to some controversy for having a strong similarities to Zinda, a Bollywood film directed by Sanjay Gupta.

While Will Smith is not in the list of actors I would like to see star in American-language remake, I can see why Spielberg might want him for this film. I feel that the originally film is as good as it is because of the intense cinematography, and Speilberg also wouldn’t be on my list of American directors to helm such a remake. Maybe Aronofsky, Fincher or Chris Nolan. But for the record, neither would Justin Lin (that guy has done nothing but disappoint me, since he made a name for himself with Better Luck Tomorrow). That said, this is a much more interesting project than The Trial of the Chicago 7.

And before everyone starts leaving angry comments about how this film shouldn’t be produced… know this:

Hollywood is going to remake Oldboy NO MATTER WHAT.

The question is would you rather someone like Justin Line of Tokyo Drift fame helm the adaptation with someone of the likes of Vin Diesel attached to star, or the biggest director in American cinema history and Will Smith attached to star? I have included the trailer for the film below.

Discuss: Do you want to see Steven Spielberg’s remake of Oldboy starring Will Smith?

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
  • Emilypeterson
y no.. will can do it....
  • Emilypeterson
    hey i agree
  • Wow, talk about unexpected.
I can't really see Spielberg doing something like this unless it was really toned down from the original.
  • Yoji
    spielberg no. will smith...hell no
  • Emilypeterson
i hate tis... willsmith can do any role... dont use the word 'Hell'
  • REAL6
    I double that, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

    But still, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  • wow.
  • Myles
Zinda came out 3years after oldboy.
  • Captain Awesome
    Jesus, what the fuck?

Don't fucking touch it. Leave it alone.

Spielberg already fucked up War of The Worlds and Indiana Jones 4.
  • SackyD
I agree, with every drop of blood in my sad, crying heart. Don't touch this masterpiece just to make another Hollywood dollar. Steven Spielberg doesn't have the dark sensibility required to touch this story... and Will Smith? "Jesus, what the fuck?" sums it up completely.
  • Yoji
I agree leave it alone. It's definitely a movie that shouldn't be remade..AT ALL.

Discuss: Do you want to see Steven Spielberg’s remake of Oldboy starring Will Smith?

    Uh fuck no
  • Captain Awesome: To be fair, George Lucas fucked up Indiana Jones 4. I think Spielberg was very competent in his direction of the film.

You guys also need to remember. Hollywood is going to remake this film - NO MATTER WHAT.

Justin Lin was originally attached. Do you really want the guy who made Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift to helm the american remake, or the biggest director in American cinema history - Speilberg? Sure there are other more stylish directors I would rather see helm the remake, but Spielberg is a much better choice than most.
  • jank
this is a joke, right? i mean, it must be. oh for fucks sake, i hope it is.
  • Oh hell. Please please please not Will Smith. Ugh. Even Spielberg would be a bad one for this. Arronofsky or Fincher maybe, but please NOT Spielberg. If he does it I'll bet it comes PG13 too. Ugh hell no.
  • Snooch To The Nooch
I'd rather someone take a shit on my face then see this remake.
  • Justin
Actually George Lucas ruined Indiana Jones 4, Spielberg was just his puppet.
  • RuvieB
yeah......i'm gonna go cry now :(

    Peter,

Spielberg is soft on all sides. He can't do a movie like this even if he tried. It's why he has to do a remake of a great movie of this caliber.

There's absolutely no need to remake this. He can surround himself with as many goons as he wants. But the guy hasn't directed anything great in years.

He is going to ruin a movie that's already perfect.
  • Yoji
If this movie has no choice but to be remade someone give the rights to David Fincher cause I think a movie like this would fit his style quite well.
  • mike
    Ugh...
    American Cinema is officially DEAD.
  • septemer11th
    FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK
  • Mag
    I hated this Movie
  • Awesome: I disagree. If another director made both Munich and Saving Private Ryan in their career, they would be considered a master filmmaker. Speilberg directed both of those films in the last 10 years. I also think Minority Report was one of the best Sci Fi films of the last decade as well.
  • Christopher Marc
I'm with Peter on this one..neither Smith or Spielberg are a good fit for this project...but then again we could get some unknown second unit director getting their hands on it... my personal choice would be James McTeigue ,although I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't agree with my opinion...and Viggo should star...we need an actor that can handle looking haggard while still a badass

Smith is way to cookie cutter all-Amercian and I can never take him seriously as a tough guy..Bad Boys is the exception even then he's cracking jokes the whole time..
Spielberg on the other hand has kind of lost it when it comes to delivering stories with his recent projects' constant plot holes (War of The Worlds & Indy 4)..he may not have written the scripts but he wasn't bright enough to spot them out and fix accordingly...maybe they should give up and give the project to Scorsese ....
  • matma
IF IT HAS TO BE REMADE (which it doesn't). I don't think Speilberg and Smith have the cahones to do it right. Would they be better than alot of other people? Yes. But it will still suck.
  • Captain Awesome
    Peter,

I disagree with you immensely. Spielberg's sci-fi work sucks almost as much as his story-telling in political films. I think stylistically, Spielberg is good what he can pull off. Doing something like Oldboy? It's not his world. Unless he rounds the edges like he has with most of his films in the last 10 years.

Have you seen Oldboy? Can you honestly say Spielberg could do something like that? This was a guy who used to pride himself on original ideas.

If I had to choose someone who could give it that edge. It would be either Fincher or Meirelles, easily. But Spielberg and Smith? Hell no.
  • Captain Awesome
Now that I think about it. Tarantino would probably be the only guy I would fully trust with a remake of this.
  • Graham
    weird concept
I would rather like to see robert downey jr in the odey su role
  • I really wish it wouldn't be done, but since Christopher Marc mentioned it I could see this being good with Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen.
  • Brian
i will do everything in my power to sabotage the making of this re-make.
  • nelson
i am mostly against will smith he is god and all but he is not right for this i always pictured someone like gary oldman or liam neesen
  • gocitizen
    Peter -
I've been a Spielberg apologist in the past and I will defend the first 2/3rds of War of the Worlds, but I really have to disagree with you about Indiana Jones 4. The film lacked tension. Scene to scene and sequence to sequence. The tension was missing. You can point to something as simple as the handling of the magic skull plot device or to more basic things like the shot selection and build-up before key set pieces. A younger Spielberg would have led you to believe that Indiana Jones just might bite it, but that feeling was completely removed from the film. Cars over cliffs and waterfalls without so much as a beat to bring out some drama for Indiana. A huge set-piece going down the receding ledges that ends abruptly with a 10 foot drop into water. I can go on and on.

These lapses are at the hands of the director - Spielberg.

As far as an American remake of Old Boy is concerned, I've got one thing to say about that -- Point of No Return.
  • Paul
There is no way they could keep the ending to the film in a Spielburg/Smith movie. And also, can anyone really picture Will Smith torturing people for revenge. They would have to make a totally new movie in order for this to work, so why don't they leave Oldboy alone?
  • Paul
Seriously, picture Will Smith holding that hammer in the picture. How fucking ridiculous is that?
  • gocitizen: The film lacked tension because of the story (ie Lucas) not die to the direction.

Awesome: I completely agree - Spielberg is not the right director for this remake, but he's a lot better than we were going to get... believe me. This remake is going to happen no matter what. Someone like Tarantino has too much respect to remake the film, hacks like Justin Lin get offered this type of movie, and Spielberg is much better than I expected Hollywood to give us.
  • larry
one of the best parts about oldboy (aside from the actual story) was the insane directing and visuals. it has a distinctly korean feel to it, which makes it special. bringing to to america and putting will smith as the lead will definitely ruin a great film.

i mean, they can't have him eat live seafood! and WTF are they gonna do, have american will smith travel around to different pizza shops in the area to find the slice he had been eating for the past 20 years?

    please no.
  • Heath
Yes to Steve, BIG FUCKIN HELLNO TO WILL SMITH!
  • StoicRomance
    Utter. Utter. Bullshit.
  • Dr. Lizardo
I'm sad that this movie is being remade... but only because the original was so awful. I don't really understand the appeal, the storyline and the big "twist" at the end were straight up laughable. Did have some pretty cool action though. Actually, the clip you posted above is the only interesting thing about the original.
  • Max
I actually think this is great news, and I really hope it happens.
  • Jack Donaghy
There are more directors out there beyond the triumvirate of the cool Fincher/Aronofsky/Nolan.

If Spielberg sticks to the super violent nature of the story, there is no way he can't fuck this up. The movie has the built in father/child issues Steven always has to place in his films no matter how out of place the theme is. But, like most things Steven, he'll water it down somehow.
  • Aaron
To my knowledge, Smith has never done a revenge film. He can do isolation (I Am Legend) and desperation (Pursuit of Happyness), but I can't think of him ever channeling the raw anger needed for a relentless pursuit of revenge. For the lead, I'd like to see them cast someone who can pull of the emotional and physical aspects of the character. If you put a Jason Statham or Vin Diesel in the role, the physical is there but not the emotional. Call it an odd pick, but what about someone like Robert Downey Jr.? He's studied martial arts for years and no one can question his acting. Or maybe Leo DiCaprio? give him just enough fight training to be able to handle himself, but not enough to look rehearsed.
  • gocitizen
Peter - with all respect to your opinion, both men are responsible.
Compare the way Spielberg handled the early sequence in War of the Worlds where the first Tripod emerges from the street....or the spider scanner/bathtub scene from Minority Report. Those sequences had timing and tension and included shot selection that manipulated those feelings in the audience. Spielberg KNOWS how to do this. He's a great director. He mailed in his work on Indy4.
  • Ssassa
Wonderful. Once again, America will ruin another great foreign film. Give yourselves a round of applause, douchebags.
  • DoogleberryWinkler
Really don't think Spielberg is the man for this. However, to play Devil's advocat, maybe this is JUST the project for him to redeem himself (particularly after KOTCS) and make a statement about, well.. not being a pussy! That he can, in fact, handle something as violent and twisted as this, without toning it down for a P-13 audience. It's a revenge flick for christ's sake! He has the directing chops to get the look and cinematography right, but at this point I remain highly skeptical (considering Will Smith is the supposed star in mind).

Given their past catalogues, these directors would be far better:
    - Fincher (obvious reasons)
    - Aronofsky
    - Nolan
    - Tarantino, or Rodriguez
    - Gore Verbinski (probably one of the only successful people to make an American remake of an Asian film)
    - Gregor Jordan, or Andrew Niccol (maybe some lesser known guys like these who've handled some darker/twisted themed films would be the way to go i.e. Buffalo Soldiers/Lord of War)

    As for actors:
Viggo Mortensen (doubt he'd be interested though), Christian Bale, Guy Pierce, Benicio Del Toro
  • matthew
No to Speilberg, yes to Will Smith. Will Smith I believe can play any role under the right direction. From Ali to Pursuit of Happiness to I am Legend, he can really adapt to tone and character and obviously pulls in the box office numbers to boot. That's really all you need in an actor. Speilberg, on the other hand, has never made a movie with a truly bleak and unsettling ending, and that to me is what makes Oldboy so special. If Oldboy is cast in the light of a typical Speilberg film, it will FAIL. Period.
  • Steve
If this gets made does anybody else think it's going to be extremely toned down for the american audience? It'll probably be re-written as a balls out action flick aimed at a pg-13/14A (Canadian ratings) Audience, presumably with the whole incest theme removed and replaced with a stronger emphasis on the bullying/taunting.

It probably won't be a re-make as much as it is a re-imagining...

I mean the whole idea of the man who eats with only one chopstick & the search for the dumplings would NEVER fucking work for an American audience.

That said, Will Smith would probably be adequate, But Ideally I'd like to see a fresh actor... Spielberg might be able to create the proper atmosphere for the movie.
  • e.
Yay. A remake of a crappy movie based on a crappy comic book.
I wonder how good this will turn out to be?!
