John Carpenter’s Riot Movie Poster

/Film reader Joe sent over this exclusive poster for John Carpenter’s Riot. Originally titled Scared Straight (I’m guessing they couldn’t secure the title rights from the popular documentary 1980 documentary), the prison thriller tells the story of a troubled youth who is sent to the Scared Straight crime-prevention program. But when a riot breaks out and the prisoners take him hostage, a lifer (played by  Nicolas Cage) is forced to help the young man out. xXx director Rob Cohen was originally attached to the project when it was set-up at New Line.

Joe Gazzam’s screenplay was on the 2005 Black List, a listing of the best unproduced screenplays of the years compiled from an extensive poll of film executives and high level assistants. Some  great talent is involved and this is Carpenter’s first film in nearly a decade.

I like John Carpenter, and strangely enough I like Nicholas Cage, but this movie sounds lame as fuck.
  • huh?
Is Cage playing the same character as in Con Air?
  • Laurie
    Awesome premise...

    Looks like a great script...

    Love Nice Cage...

...and love you John Carpenter -- so don't let us down!!!

  • Please, people, look into your hearts, and stop giving Nicholas Cage work.

    UNCAGED

John Carpenter needs to stop fucking around and make "Escape from Earth" before him and Kurt Russell get too old!!!
  • mcgruff
so it's basically Con Air but instead of a plane, it's set IN the prison? woo
  • R_McCall
RIOT! YEAH! YEAH! I'M HYPED! WHOOOOOOOOO! RIOT!... well, I'm excited...
  • matt
    @mcgruff

If he's wearing a mullet and a wife beater, we're doomed.

Otherwise, maybe this could be Cage under good direction! I'll be optimistic.
  • AlexanderSupertramp
Yep. This is what Nic Cage has been reduced to. Acting in a John Carpenter film.
  • Eucarya
What's with Nic Cage being attached to all these projects with great directors lately? He's made nothing but utter crap the past few years (Ghost Rider is easily one of the worst films ever made in that budget range).

So far he's going to star in new films by:

    Werner Herzog
    Alex Proyas
    Roman Polanski (!!!)
    John Carpenter
& Hoyt Yeatman (.. wait, nm)

So what's the deal with this sudden Cagemania among genius directors? Seriously, Proyas I can believe as he's gone slowly downhill since peaking with Dark City. Same thing for Carpenter, he's made plenty of bad choices. But... HERZOG and POLANSKI?! Is this a sign of the apocalypse?

I don't think Nic Cage is a terrible terrible actor, he's been in great films but he carries with him an inherent cheapness and has lately seemed to rub off on whatever project he's involved with. What gives?
  • Eucarya
ps... "UNCAGED" tagline ... are you f'n serious?
  • johnrunion
nick cage lost it after '95. he has done a very few good films since then. adaptation and bringing out the dead and face/off are about it. he used to be all about rock and roll. he used to be a true artist and poet when it came to acting back before he sold out. (check out wild at heart, vampire's kiss, etc. to see the once great cage in action.) carpenter is STILL a great director. just check out cigarette burns from masters of horror. carpenter is doing cage a major favor at this point. cage was great, but that was a l-o-n-g time ago ... before he started hanging out with bruckheimer!
  • I thought it was clever. (And I'm not just saying that because I thought of it.)
  • Very clever tagline. I wonder what genius on this Earth thought of it. Oh yeah, it was ME.
  • Get it? unCAGEd? Damn! Whoever thought of that is some kind of wunderkind. A modern day Albert Einstein. Packin' more genius than the Genius Bar at an Apple Store. A straight-A brainiac. It's like the tagline descended from the heavens above to grace us with it's presence and dazzle us with it's brilliance. It's almost TOO good of a tagline. Somewhere else a tagline sucks hard proving that there's a yin and yang of taglines. I wish that someday in my lifetime I could meet the talented soul that unearthed that unbelievable tagline. Oh wait... that's me. Nevermind.
  • cousin joe
    Hey Don,

Glad you gave up stand-up becuase you really SUCKED at it. Unfortunately, your tag lines are almost as lame as your jokes were.
  • this could be carpenter returning to assault on precinct 13 and escape from new york and ghosts of mars turf. it could be very good.
