Jack Black To Play “Gulliver” In New “Travels”

It looks like Jonathan Swift’s classic book, Gulliver’s Travels, is going to have another run at the big screen. Twentieth Century Fox is moving forward with a film version of the book, this time with Jack Black playing the titular character. Shark Tale director Rob Letterman will be taking up directorial duties. Shooting will begin in March, with a screenplay by Nicholas Stoller and Joe Stillman. It should be noted that Variety describes this as a “contemporary re-imagining,” and that Gulliver will play a travel writer going to the Bermuda Triangle, presumably in modern times. In the original book, Gulliver went on to encounter societies that were dramatically different than our own, including a civilization of horses and a land of tiny humans.

Travels has been made into many films (several of them animated) over the years. Most recently, Ted Danson took up Gulliver duties in the 1996 NBC Miniseries. I was really fond of this series, as I thought it struck a great balance between the fantastic and the serious (not to mention the inventive framing of the story using Gulliver’s trial). It looks like this time around, with a comedic lead and a director/writer team who are known for their comedies, they may jettison the more serious and darker elements of the story in favor of a madcap style adventure. I’m not necessarily opposed to re-invention, but there’s a fine line between “homage” and “bastardization.” However, if it can at least make us laugh, then how could we possibly object?

Discuss: Are you a fan of Gulliver’s Travels? What do you think of Jack Black as Gulliver?

I've been a long time respectful reader of the travles. Also seen the film with Ted Danson. I think as long as Jack Black plays it as he played his part in King Kong, he will do great. If he brings the "Jack Black" portion of his acting into it then it'll be ruined.

I like Jack Black but his choice in projects have never been that good.
  • MKW
    I freaking hate Gulliver's travels.
  • Pass...

I really like the book and would normally get upset with such news, but this project really seems messy and wrong. Gulliver as a contemporary comedy... I just don't see this being good in any way.

The only way I'd be interested is if they update the extremely satirical undercurrent the original book had for modern times. If they forget the political satire, then it isn't Gulliver's Travels.
  • Arch Stanton
He's a terrible actor who's never, and I repeat never, made a good movie as the lead.

Other than that, they're on the right track.

    @ Arch Stanton

School of Rock doesn't sound familiar?
  • SOLID
Agreed with Brian. He could top Danson's portrayal granted he doesn't slip into Badurpidurp Jack Blackness. color me intrigued by this movie's possibilities.
  • Nathan
Jack will make it a good adaptation. He's a great talent.

But the director of Shark Tale? That doesn't speak quality film, that says family friendly comedy. I may be curious about this movie, but I have really low expectations.
  • Jackie/B
Its hard to see Jack Black doing this simply is not right for him or him for the story. I think that is just not right for either party. Sorry, but I liked him in tropical thunder.
  • good idea..he actually has some range as an actor
  • Rory
    I heart Jables.
    Hes friggen awesome!
Don't know if Im looking forward to this, itd be a 3hr epic that'll bore me $#itless...
  • /m
i'm just gonna watch this in cable tv.
  • I'm a huge fan of JB. I can only hope that they keep this more in the serious and less in the funny. JB is underestimated as an actor and will surprise the hell out of people once he is attached to the right project. Who knows? This could be it. We'll just have to wait and see what comes of it.
  • I love the story of Gulliver's Travels and I thought the series with Ted Danson was pretty well done. This doesn't sound promising at all.
