We heard rumors last week that 34-year old Joaquin Phoenix might be retiring from film but the fact that E!’s reporter didn’t take him seriously caused him to walk off and prevented him from elaborating further (check out this vid for the entire interaction). Phoenix was understandably peeved, but now the AP reports that this past Saturday night, at the premiere of his latest film,Two Lovers (directed by James Gray), Joaquin Phoenix officially announced the end of his movie career in order to pursue music. Phoenix showed up with the words “Good” and “Bye!” etched into his hands (check out the AP article for the pic) and said:

It’s like greener pastures, you know what I mean? And so, I’m just going to try and like, I’ll just be doing the other thing. … Hopefully, I will emotionally impact you with that, as well.

My reaction to this is not so much “Awwww,” or “This is a tragedy!” as much as “Huh?” Phoenix has consistently turned in good performances throughout his entire career, with star-making turns in the Academy-Award-nominated Walk the Line as well as the box office success Signs. But my personal favorite is his role in Gladiator, as the angsty, incestuous, adolescent-like Commodus. Almost without fail, Phoenix’s roles always portrayed him as a small person in a big world, battling with forces beyond his control, as he did in films like Clay Pigeons and To Die For.

Although his recent work in films like Ladder 49 or We Own the Night were nothing to write home about, they were still competent and it never occurred to me that he would suddenly and unexpectedly give up a career that showed a lot of promise. It should be noted that Phoenix won a Grammy for his work on Walk the Line, a film for which he learned how to play guitar and sing. As a musician myself, I was actually quite impressed, not only with his technical skill, but with his proficiency at imitation in that film. Perhaps it’s not as much an end to a movie career as it is the beginning of a musical one? Let me know what you think in the comments.

Discuss: Are you sorry to see Phoenix leave the world of film? Are you excited to see what Phoenix might be able to bring to the world as a musician or a music video director?

I will miss this sexuality that exudes in his movie roles, his depth, his beauty. We can only phantom the true why's? I hope and pray that those in power and closest to JP can intervene in the negative comments on his drug abuse and unhealthy appearance. I can only image that his music will undoubtedly will be surreal in meaning or just wishful thinking.

I read somewhere in is bio: he never wanted to be pigeon-holed in any of his roles.

Coming from a true admirable of his works I wish for him L, P and H and may the powers that be above grant you inner peace.
  • I will miss his sexuality the exudes in his movie roles, his depth, his demeanor. I only hope that all the negative comments made on substance use are false, and that his physical appearance improves. I pray that those closest to him and in power intervene in this area and enlighten this cloud that surrounds him.

Sometimes when you climb mountains and reach the apex that's all you wanted to do, just see if you could do it. I guess satisfaction comes in all shapes and forms.

Hey, this only my opinion who are we to judge?

His music will most likely be as intriguing as he is, but, will we have a chance to hear it or it just in his mind? We shall see in the future.

I read somewhere in his bio: he never wanted to be pigeon-holed in any role he's performed. L, P and H to Joaquin.

    BYE!GOOD to you too, Sir.

Clean yourself up, kick whatever habit you may have at the moment, and we'll see you doing in Clay Pigeons 2 in a few years.

    My thorax.

He is a great actor but if he doesnt want to be in the business he doesnt want to be in the business.
He seemed pretty drugged out in his interview annoucing that he would be leaving acting. Maybe he is heading down the same road as his Brother.
  • Zamir
    He'll be back
  • Dixxy
    I have a fresh perspective.

Guys, did you see the video of him? Have any of you ever been totally high on crack? Shame to say, I have and he IS. Look at him. He is totally gone in that video - u can hardly understand him. Think of other stars who went cookoo then started turning up in rehab or worse - think of his brother. Jaoquin sounds like he's in a place right now and why is Casey involved in this interview...wierd.

one douchebag less in hollywood, high five!
  • I really don't get this. He learned some chords on guitar for "Walk the Line" and now he thinks he is a rock star? He's a remarkable actor but with his work ethic I'm surprised he didn't pull a Health Ledger a long time ago. His music career will be equivalent to Russel Crowe's and he'll return for the right roles in five or less years if he isn't dead.

He and Bale are way overdue for Oscars. I don't take this too seriously as it looked like he was blazed out of his mind. I've heard he is difficult to work with, so it wouldn't surprise me if the roles haven't been coming in so he just wants to take a break.
  • Brian
Wait, so he messed up writing Goodbye on his knuckles and ended up writing Bye!-good? Smart.
  • R_McCall
This is the non-event of the year. Who gives a shit... aint no one gonna buy his records anyhow.
  • lost soldier
What if he really was high, and he got in front of the camera, E! of all things, got caught up in the acting bit, and just sort of blurted that he was quitting making films, not really thinking what he was doing? And when the guy laughed, he got so pissed off and confused, and decided to really quit acting, to show the world he wasnt high or pussified.

    Yeah, that would be funny.
  • nemonik
    the dude looked high.
  • Karni
I'd like to see him say it with his sunglasses off.
  • andrewdill
he was in a movie called "space camp" and his name was "Leaf Pheonix" in the credits.....my point being......he will be missed.

    @ Captain Awesome

Lets hope he is... Referencing bands like Dogstar to support your argument will not get past Go. You will not collect 200 dollars

In the overall scheme of things, its just a man's decision to change direction in his life. Who the hell are we to judge? We should be more bummed that Powers Booth isn't doing more in Film.

That's right. Powers Booth is the fucking man
  • charles
Oh Please!! This guy is like Jay Z I'm retired. Then about two years from he'll say he had to come back acting is in his blood or some bullshit. Then if those records don't sale he'll be back in a year.
  • Captain Awesome
"Once he realizes that the music industry is more heartless than the movie industry, he’ll be back."

    haha, you're kidding right?
  • Jaybee U Tler
why does ben affleck's lil brother talk like he's from scotland?
  • gah
Eh, whatever. River Phoenix was the real tragedy. That kid had real talent. If you haven't checked out My Own Private Idaho, go rent or buy it.
  • Fir3Wolf
Jet Li never said he was retiring, he said he wasn't going to do any Martial Arts Epics i.e. movies like Hero and Fearless. He is still going to do regular action movies.
  • Starbelly
From what I've heard, he's quite eccentric (vegan chain smoker amongst other things) so this is probably a publicity stunt as was mentioned before. He'll probably either get bored with the music thing and come back to acting if the right part comes along, or become some washed up drug addict. I hope it's the former because I think he's pretty talented.
  • Rosario
I don't think he should of said he's giving up acting for good. Just saying that if the singing doesn't work out then he might as well go back to acting and me personally I hate when actors or singers are constantly retired and then not retired.
  • MrMad2001
Eh when was he last in a good movie that people saw? Walk the Line yeah I am over him. I hate when people make a huge scene and announce their leaving. As if people care. He is just looking for some attention to get his music career started.
  • giantyoda
    correction:
    Reeves = Dogstar
  • giantyoda
Once he realizes that the music industry is more heartless than the movie industry, he'll be back. I'm not sure why he can't do both though. Look at Keanu Reeves. The guy acts and rocks out in Stardog whenever there's an opening.

I just hope he doesn't go the way of River.
  • SOLID
    I forgot he existed, honestly.

  • Great actor sorry to see him go...

    next make sure you write:

"Good Bye!" right, not "Bye! Good". (see pics on AP Article)

He should do an album with Jared Leto.

It would be nice to have the money and time to leave a job to pursue other interests, knowing full well that you have the insurance of a multi-million dollar offer on the acting table any time you want to accept it. Sounds like a pretty good life.
  • edog
After "Great Balls of Fire," Dennis Quaid made the same claim. Guess what? He took a couple years off, then made more than 30 films since then.

As for Mr. Phoenix, I won't really be missing him.
  • Lenny
I actually really dig the Walk the Line soundtrack with his singing on it and I will be looking forward to hearing what he comes up with originally.
By the way I in no way dig Crowe,Leto,Bruno,Bacon, or Quaids "music". So this would be a rare occasion for me...

Johanssen is hot so I'll watch her videos but the music not so much.

In fact normally this is a bad idea all together so here's to hoping what he does doesn't suck?
  • Brian
he'll go back to acting when is music career doesn't work out, and i am predicting that it won't work out.
  • Daniel
Just a PR stunt. He'll be back to acting before it's all over.
  • Arch Stanton
Marky Mark giving up music for acting thinks this is hilarious.
  • Agent J
Bummer...Hopefully he will still produce some good music instead.

    2 words...Buffalo Soldiers!!!
rent it if you haven't seen it...brilliant!

Tell Keanu and Mr. Crowe I said 'sup.

I think if this is what he wants to do right now and for his future then the best of luck. I hope he has success in his musical journey.
  • joe c
do not worry he will be back in 3- 7 years .. the music biz is in a horrible state.. and when he realizes that no one will hear or pay him for his music he will be back- ask sean penn about his retirement or johnny depp about his music career.. phoenix will act again just to pay the bills like the rest of us do jobs we hate
  • e.
    YES!

    Good and Bye!
  • According to gossip sites it's drugs. http://thesuperficial.com/2008/11/joaquin_phoen...

I have no idea what to believe but I've always been a big fan of Joaquin's acting so I hope he decides to return sooner or later and that he is doing well =)
  • Christopher Marc
meh, nothing new actors take on music all the time..when he can't make a dime or he spends all his money on making albums nobody listens to...he'll be back to acting, just sounds like he's bored with Hollywood at the moment
  • Roberto
I don't really care either way. The guy should do whatever makes him happy. Hopefully his music is at least as good as his acting, which was pretty good. But there are plenty of actors just as good.
  • j
He'll be back, didn't Micky Rourke, Jet Li, and Hugh Grant once say that they were retiring.
