The Reader Movie Trailer

The Weintein Co has released the first trailer for Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of The Reader. The romantic drama is set in a post-World War II Germany, and tells the story of “a man whose life has been shaped by an illicit affair with a passionate, elusive older woman during his youth.” The film stars Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes.

Bernhard Schlink’s The Reader has been translated into 39 languages, has garnered numerous awards, and is the first German novel to reach number one on The New York Times Bestseller List. The post production quibbles have been well documented, and Harvey Weinstein hopes to have the film in theaters on December 10th. Official Plot Synopsis:
The Reader opens in post-WWII Germany when teenager Michael Berg becomes ill and is helped home by Hanna, a stranger twice his age. Michael recovers from scarlet fever and seeks out Hanna to thank her. The two are quickly drawn into a passionate but secretive affair.

Michael discovers that Hanna loves being read to and their physical relationship deepens. Hanna is enthralled as Michael reads to her from “The Odyssey,” “Huck Finn,” and “The Lady with the Little Dog.” Despite their intense bond, Hanna mysteriously disappears one day and Michael is left confused and heartbroken.

Eight years later, while Michael is a law student observing the Nazi war crime trials, he is stunned to find Hanna back in his life – this time as a defendant in the courtroom. As Hanna’s past is revealed, Michael uncovers a deep secret that will impact both of their lives. “The Reader” is a haunting story about truth and reconciliation, about how one generation comes to terms with the crimes of another.

I quite enjoy the choice of Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet as the leads, they both give amazing performances. The fact that it takes place in older times (not olde, but old) adds another bonus.

@ Alberto: well said, i agree!!!!!!!!!

I read this book amidst all of the hype, have to say I didn't think it was that good. I mean the concept is fascinating, no doubt. But it was not the most impressive piece of writing...at least as I remember it. It seems to me this may be one of those rare cases (as with "Sophie's Choice" and some might argue "The English Patient") where the movie is better than the book....

@ Victoria, I LOVE Winslet too! The finest film actor of her generation, I feel. However, I feel she is miscast in this role. I'm sure she'll give a stellar performance that no one else could have lived up to. But still-- I pictured someone more like a slightly pudgy Ludivine Sagnier in this role....

    Regardless, dying to see it.....

I read "The Reader" years ago and it is in my top 5 favorite books of all time. I am excited to see the movie. The only thing that is disappointing is that in the book, the older woman is not descibe as attrative as Kate Winslet...but that is Hollywood for you.

I thought the film was too superficial in its lack of development of Kate Winslet's character, framing Hanna as a typical ill tempered, dominant German woman without exploring her nature further. This sort of film which seeks to exploit intense sexuality without balancing the almost textbook-like coupling of sex organs was laughable. The scenery was nice, but the film was slanted toward portraying the victimization of the male character without discovering anything further about the woman. The plausibility of Hanna not being able to read and write presents the thought that she was learning disabled, not a likely assumption, and the fact that she was having an affair with Michael Berg, probably a Jewish young man, is also hard to believe, so what to make of it? Bad film.

I thought that this was one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Kate Winslet gave a superb performance as well as Ralph Fiennes who plays a flawed character extremely well. This film was done in such a thoughtful way that it will go down as one of the best.

Does the actual affair take place in Post War Germany? If so how does she take a guard job and commit war crimes after she leaves him?

Winslett was fantastic and she deserves all the accolacades. This was one of the best pictures that I've seen in quite some time.

I don't understand how they got away with casting a 17 year old (at the time of filming) to play such intimate scenes with Winslett. Isn't there something illegal/immoral about that even though it was a tastefully done movie? I know it was filmed in Germany but still, there just seems to be something wrong with that.
