Warner Bros has hired J. Michael Straczynski to write a remake of Forbidden Planet. The original saw a group of Earth scientists who are sent some 17 light years away to investigate what happened to a colony of settlers on Altair-4. They find a man with a secret and his daughter who somehow survived a hideous monster attack on their planet. Gene Roddenberry has noted that Fred Wilcox’s original 1956 sci-fi film was one of the inspirations for Star Trek.

Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the movie was nominated for best special effects Oscar, and was noted for its groundbreaking use of an all-electronic score, and the first appearances of Robby the Robot and the C-57D starship (which was subsequently used in a number of productions, including the Twilight Zone’s “To Serve Man”). The movie’s poster was listed as the fifth best Movie Poster ever created by Premiere Magazine.

Straczynski is probably best known as the creator of Babylon 5, but in recent years he has transitioned into an A-list Hollywood writer. He wrote Clint Eastwood’s most recent film, Changeling, The Wachowski Brothers’ Ninja Assassin, and the big screen adaptation of World War Z. Many names have been attached to the project over the years including James Cameron. Joel Silver is producing the latest try.

Discuss: Do we really need a Forbidden Planet Remake?

I met Leslie Nelson On October 25th. Asked him quickly about this and he just shunned away the idea. BAD idea to remake this.
  • whatever
I'm game. JMS is a favorite writer of mine. So I'm sure he can make something fascinating especially in these times of unlimited imagination in cinema.
  • It'll definitely be better TDTESS remake.
  • Christopher Marc
we may not need it but the film influenced a majority of the science fiction films...and it could end up a million times better than TDTESS...considering theres a lot great source material involved...I trust WB on this one and the writer is good enough...but that could change depending on the casting and the director they get for it....let's wait and see
  • Hey! Another remake! Suprise suprise!

Who needs classic movies...when we can just remake them?!
  • Mikey M
If anyone can write that, I am sure he can. Anyone who has seen B5 would know that.
  • south texas terror
Thanx to the day the earth stood still, they are gonna remake alot of 50's sci-fi movies. and if they cant make that decent i will lost all hope for remakes
  • As most of us are, I'm typically against remakes, but Forbidden Planet is dated. Not just FX-wise either. As with most films that old, it's very theatrically written and acted. The basic story and themes are terrific, but it could certainly be spruced up. The two sci-fi remakes I always secretly wanted were this and Running Man (because of the rise of Reality TV). I'm in.

I've been waiting for this one to be remade. Even though it's a classic I've always felt that it didn't, and doesn't, recieve the respect it deserves. I know that a lot of films have stolen parts of the plot over the years but I still feel like this one deserves full attention from even those who don't watch enough movies to see these classical pearls. I suppose I don't know how to explain it but I simply think remaking this film is a good idea.
  • I'm for it as long as they don't do to it what was done to "The Day The Earth Stood Still." I just saw the trailer for that and OMG, does it look AWFUL.

Once again, casting seems to be a good indicator of whether or not the filmmakers will do a decent and respectful job. Instead of wasting millions on Keanu Reeves, why didn't they just go down the local department store and buy a mannequin? They'd so much money AND get a better performance!

Seriously, there are so many sci-fi stories that have yet to made into films that could be terrific if done right. Here's a few:

Rendezvous With Rama (I know that one's been in the works)
    Galactic Derelict
    Ringworld
    The Stars, My Destination
    The Demolished Man
  • Tom
I would add "The Mote in God's Eye"
  • Bob
I can't wait for the remake of Citizen Kane. It's in black and white for goodness sake!
  • john
    dear Hollywood,

STOP REMAKING CLASSIC 50's FILMS !!!!!!!!!!!
AINT YOU GOT ANY ORIGINAL IDEAS??????

but if you must remake something, please try Horror of Party beach with Jessica Simpson as the first victim.
  • Brian
I've stood by and given a few older remakes a chance. But with this one all I can say is NO WAY IN HELL!

Quite easily the most awesome movie of it's kind, a remake of this classic will tarnish it's reuptation forever.
  • Matt
I'm just going to pretend I didn't read this posting....I'm not fan of the origanal....
  • jamie
    you never "NEED" a remake

perhaps it should be directed by judd apatow and star paul rudd as the robot from the poster, then slashfilm would love the idea
  • ColorMeConfused
I'm confused - it's stated here that Joel Silver is producing "World War Z" but he's not. That's a Plan B Entertainment project. Brad Pitt bust a gut outbidding Leonardo DiCaprio for the rights to the book and hired JMS to write the screenplay. The last I knew Dede Gardner at Plan B was producing this movie for Pitt. So where does Joel Silver come into the picture?
  • Funny, "Forbidden Planet" was on cable today and as I clicked through it (I own a Sp. Ed., complete w/miniature Robby the Robot), I thought, "Isn't it about time "Forbidden Planet" gets the remake treatment?" and lo and behold, it is.

To be honest, I'd rather they leave "Forbidden Planet" alone, but I can see why they'd want to remake it to include lots action scenes (similar to say, "Aliens") including more than one monster from the Id.
  • Let's see what they can do...
  • Even if it is JMS, I'd rather see new than rehashed movies. Let the original stand, and let's try something new. Childhood's End? Glory Road? The Practice Effect? Others have already been mentioned. And if you're gonna do a remake, why not do a good story that someone made a dreck movie of? I know there's a desire to pack them in by taking on a classic, but making real money takes people coming back to the theater--why not be compared against something where you're sure to look like an improvement?
  • Dr. Mark
Well, I have feared this possibility for a long time. Possibly the finest classic Sci-Fi film of all time and now the possibility of a remake is nauseating. This is akin to "remaking" a 50 y/o bottle of Dom. Maybe a true to the original sequel or prequel, but I know (even with a quality director/screenwriter) what will happen....a film made special by the zeitgeist that produced it, from "relationships" to "blasters" will suffer from being "Oprahtized". We will see a "grittier, up-to-date" destruction of this film, maybe Jeanine Garofalo as the capt with a not-so-subtle 2008 underlying social agenda celebrating f'ing DIVERSITY...PLZ, PLZ no remake!!!!
  • Dr. Mark
    So, why bother writing???
  • The Traveler
You can't bottle lightning, but you can ride it.
  • Wade
Not only should this film not be remade, but JMS is absolutely the wrong guy to do it. He's a hack, and this needs intelligence. What could be done by anyone with an IQ larger than his belt size is a sequel.
  • Peter
What you all are missing on this is there needs to be a prequel dealing with how the Krell failed and what happened that night that all perished due to the mind expanding efforts of the original settlers. There is a great story there.
  • Howard
With today's virtually unlimited special effects capabilities, I'd love to see what someone could do with a remake of one of my all-time favorite Sci-Fi films.

On the subject of other stories, I would love to see a film made from a fairly obscure book that could ONLY be done with today's special effects, "Deus Ex Machina."
  • rhayzerbak
I believe a sequel if done right might be great , however if the were to make the prequel "The Ballarifon" when they first landed on Altair IV this would be best.
  • Mark
The original will always be the original, it would be nice to see a remake of this but I think its important not to mess around with the story line too much.
Many people will have never seen the original, so when they release the DVD/Blu-ray it should include both.

And I want to see what happens to Dr Morphius when he meets his monster.
  • I normally don't like remakes, but this sounds interesting.
