Brett Ratner Directs Guitar Hero World Tour

Brett Ratner took yet another paycheck and has filmed a series of advertisements for Guitar Hero World Tour. The first of the advertisements which premiered earlier in the week, features Kobe Bryant rocking the mic, Alex Rodriguez and Michael Phelps “dancing while ripping it up on the exhilarating new guitars, and Tony Hawk sliding in on a skateboard to play the drums.” Talk about lame…

It’s funny that even in a short form medium like television advertisements, the difference between a hack director like Brett Ratner and a master filmmaker like David Fincher (see Fincher’s Nike commercial here) is clear.

  • Trystan
    dude, that was funny.
    hate ratner.
    but that was funny.
  • Amy Rock
The commercial transcends lame. But I would be ecstatic if Ratner would quit making movies to peruse a career in commercials
  • Sam
The tv ad is pretty bad, but on the positive side: it might very well be the best thing Ratner has ever created. LOL
  • helicopters
    pathetic.

and i do mean your lame fanboyism.
  • Saw that ad during one of the games this past weekend. Talk about douche chills. Embarrassing for all involved. Hope they all got nice fat paychecks.
  • Terror Australis
Am I the only one who thinks that the whole "Brett Ratner-hate" is getting really old?
  • Nick O.
    No creativity whatsoever.
  • Joeda
The end result also depends alot on how much money the director is given by the company to produce the ad. So comparing this ad to David Fincher's Nike commercial, it was probably given a lower budget.
  • Joe
The worst part is that they're not even advertising with a song in the game.

Yes, that song is NOT featured in Guitar Hero 4.
  • Ratner needs to make films of the same quality as Red Dragon.
  • Senor Dingdong
Am I the only one who doen't see the point of this?

Nike ad was totally over the top, it's tv advertisement, not freaking sundance.
  • Sy0n
Absolutely horrible. I don't buy into the Ratner-hate so much, although I do cringe when I hear he gets rights to make a game/comic movie adaptation. But I typically will see it anyway. This commercial is just stupid though.
  • Brian
If people support this they need to have everything they own revoked. Total garbage.
  • And what's with the 4 of them wearing the same shirts.......

  • IK
This commercial would have been better if Scrubs didn't do it first.
  • dave
all this talk about ratner is making me thirsty...
  • Henry Jones Jr
    That was awful.
  • mikle
the best part is when the second guy magically slides right through the rug withought pushing it.

    bad effects hahaha
  • Mike
    Kobe ... Strike One
    A-Rod ... Strike Two
    Michael Phelps ... Strike Three
    Your're Out Brett Ratner

    Sorry Tony Hawk
  • Completely agree with Trystan up top. Ratner did not help himself on the loser meter but being also a sports fan... I think this commercial does great things for Kobe and Alex Rodriguez... Micheal Phelps... enough already.
  • Tripplo
I was JUST talking about how gay this commercial was with my buddie, who later came on this site only to laugh at how Slash Film thought the same thing! hahahaha it was amazing! thanks /film!! goodtimes. The icing on the cake was the brett ratner part, big surprise eh? lol
  • Arch Stanton
    This is truly pitiful.
  • The_Jezzus
LOL....It's a damn commerical. I'm not a Rat-ner fan, but are you guys going to complain whne your favorite shampoo doesn't live up to Fincher's Fate commercial?

    Get a life
  • Joe Newman
i thought the point was that Ratner's commercial could have been done by anyone so yea it being a normal commercial in comparison to Fincher's commercial is fair.

Red Dragon and The Family Man are both good movies and the first Rush Hour was enjoyable (the 2nd one not so much). Although Im sorry but I automatically dislike him as a director for most of X-men 3.
  • Graham
why the fuck did he use sports stars for a music based video game.
  • Trystan
i think he used sports stars to portray that no matter who you are in life
you will always have that dream of being a rockstar.

haha, i wonder if he actually put that much thought into it.
  • Tripplo
Only Brett Ratner can take the best athletes from sports and make them wear underwear and pink shirts, convince them to make a retarded commercial and pass it off like there is nothing wrong with that image.

I cant be the only one who is worried for God of War .. especially after witnessing this.
  • Todd
The funny thing about this (not that Ratner is a cock) is that there is no guitar in this song, even though its for guitar hero. A-Rod jammin out on a guitar to the sounds of a piano is only proof that Ratner has no idea what he is doing
  • edog
    Weak sauce.

Also, TRIPPLO, do you mean gay, like Kobe and Phelps and Tony Hawk are going to make out with each other? Or are you just ignorant?
  • fuj
What are people whinging about? The idea is to get people to buy Guitar Hero. It's a decent ad. Not a groundbreaking work of art but it does its job.
  • VegaBro
Awful awful awful sync. Just awful
  • Jordan
zomg the direction is horrible in that. knowing brett ratner directed that makes me want to go into best buy and destroy all the guitar heroes. It makes me want to have sex with a guy.

    /sarcasm

comparing fincher to ratner isn't exactly fair. yes, ratner isn't the best, but they make totally different kinds of movies.
  • mudywaters
Couldn't agree more. Fincher is awesome and Ratner is a hack. Even though video game movie adaptations usually suck, you know God of War is going to be that much worse with the Rat. I think GOW has a good story and combine that with the action, it has potential, but not with the Rat.
  • Ohiofile
The director of a commercial does not design the concept, so, like Ratner or hate him, he didn't come up with this. Whichever ad agency has Activision as a client is the one who sucks the most (when it comes to this ad). Don't believe it? Check out the extremely bad ad campaign for Guitar Hero:On Tour for the DS. Now I'm not defending Ratner. I think he's a mediocre filmmaker with a good publicist and a good agent but believe it or not, this ad is getting good reviews for being funny and everyone associated is laughing all the way to the bank.

    3 problems:

    1. The piano riff in the beginning is cut up, so it restarts faster than it normally would, making the whole groove fall apart, as there is absolutely no sense of time, until the lead singer starts singing and the music really starts, thus defeating the whole purpose of a "cool intro".

    2. When the singer slides in, he halts for a short while, before making a full stop.

    3. Tony Hawks drumming is out of time throughout.

    wtf.
    I love Fincher.
And dont like Ratner, but cant you see that the ad Ratner did could never be as good as Fincher's because of the story...?
I bet if Ratner did the Nike ad itd be better than Fincher doing the Guitar Hero one...
  • Jimmy Weber
I saw somewhere on the web Tony Hawk interviewing Michael Phelps about this commercial. What struck me was a B-Roll shot of Tony Hawk acting against a Green Screen. After rewatching this god awful commercial, I now realize the opening shot is actually composited in there. How freaking ridiculous is that? This thing was shot on a GREEN SCREEN!!!
  • DocHop
Commercials are supposed to get the point across, not be Academy-award winning 30 second clips. I didn't think the commercial was that bad, and as far as advertisement rules go, a catchy song never goes wrong.....

If Ratner goes near a comic book film set again though, I'm putting a hit out on him.....
  • One word to explain to this post is awesome.
  • It is really a very nice video.
