The Day the Earth Stood Still 5 Minute Trailer

20th Century Fox has released a five minute trailer for The Day The Earth Stood Still on Yahoo. As expected, much of the extended trailer was featured in the television presentation last month. From what I gather, I think I’m the only one who thinks this looks bad. But even I’ll admit, Gort looks cool.

Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

“The Day the Earth Stood Still” is 20th Century Fox’s contemporary reinvention of its 1951 classic. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor’s appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission – and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described “friend to the Earth.”

The Day The Earth Stood Still hits theaters on December 12th 2008.

fuck off. I'm against the remake!!!!! It just doesn;'t have the creepy 50s feel that the original film has.
  • its got an granduous feel about it, im not sure about keanu, looks just like his regular "straightface-cant-act-look" like Neo etc.
ill see it, i just wont be expecting a brilliant film.
suppose i better see the original before then
  • Chase
This film looks more like an action film and will probably completely miss the point of the original. This is just another example of how Hollywood is taking classics and dumbing them down for our generation and try to make more money. I will go see this film, but I'm guessing I'll boo it at the end.
  • nope
Peter, you're not alone, I think it looks bad, and WHY THE HELL ARE THEY MAKING THIS REMAKE OF A TRUE CLASSIC
  • Jaybee U Tler
that cgi looks really bad. like 10,000 bc bad,
  • Rhys
    overly dramatic trailer.
    i'll wait for the dvd
  • Luke
I think this looks absolutely horrible. Giant waste of money and time. The original stands alone as one of the greatest films ever made. LEAVE IT ALONE!
  • mikey
well for someone who has never seen or headr of the original film this one looks quite good. the taking down the planes part was awesome.
  • whatever
Day the earth stood still is a classic. This will just be another shitty half brained remake that can't even dream of surpassing the original in anything but fx.
  • Joe
Something tells me this would look pretty good if it wasn't called The Day The Earth Stood Still.

If they changed around the names, it'd be a stock action movie, not a royal destruction of a classic.
  • Aqualeo
i'm excited about this movie. i think keanu is perfect for this role. And i'll watch anything with Jennifer Connelly in it.
  • What is the point? Why remake a movie that is already brilliant?

Although the trailer looks interesting, I'm not expecting anything brilliant. I just can't imagine Reeves saying "klatuu verata nicto" with a straight face, or rather I can think about it without bursting into laughter.
  • NINJARTIST
The Exorcism of Emily Rose was a very smart genre film... I'll give the director's remake effort a chance...

I just wish this trailer didn't look like it was shot on a camcorder from a TV showing a VHS recording.
  • ded
    sick
  • Christopher Marc
wow this looks really bad....special effects look like leftovers from the last fantastic four movie....done on the cheap and it shows
  • Deniz
I don't know, this could be cool to see.
But i don't think it will be a good movie....:(
  • Brian
seriously, the original is horribly dated visually. i've come to notice that most people don't know shit about cgi or the quality of it because according to the public in general every movie with cgi has bad cgi. it's called suspension of disbelief, look it up. i like how people complain about it for this but the original Klaatu looks like shit compared to modern films. i smell a double standard
  • Bill
I'm just seeing it for Don Draper
  • j
    This looks so bad, WHOAH.
  • Christopher Marc
    @Brian

when money is spent correctly special effects are meant to blow us away...James Cameron is a great example with Abyss and Terminator 2....now with these horrible CGI fly by night companies who mostly do effects for television commercials seem to be hired more than often for films...a lot of the places are using outdated tools and are only hired because they can do it cheap and quick....and the results are average at best
  • brandon
agreed, how can you tell shitty CGI from a bad quality trailer. I think it looks quite interesting, and the general public has never seen the original, so if anything this movie will help the original by creating interest.
  • Jonathan
    @ Christopher Marc

You do realize the special effects were done by WETA right?? As in, one of the biggest special effects companies around?
  • Jarrad Wilkes
My objection has nothing to do with the original.

My objection is that this looks dumb and that Keanu Reeves cannot act.
  • drew
i just saw the movie and keanu was awesome...hate to say it but he beats michael rennie, bc an alien would not have facial expression or feeling he would be there to do his part and leave...and keanu did that perfectly...plus he has autism sooo give keanu a break hes a mental and he has more money than you
  • Christopher Marc
    @Jonathan

I didn't know that...they must have had their interns work on the movie because the effects look awful...
  • Jonathan
Also, are there any high-res pictures of that picture up top (of the orb)?
  • Brian
i watched it again and aside from Klaatu the effects seem quite good, especially the semi and stadium being disintegrated. they are really not bad as a people like to claim. in reality like someone else said, its actually pretty retarded to judge effects on a trailer of such low resolution.
  • A. J.
It's amazing how many people think the CGI looks awful
when in fact the trailer is small and when blown up full
size it gets completely fuzzy. I don't think this will be
movie of the year but it does look quite interesting.
    I'll see it...on DVD.
  • terrible! oh, why?
  • I probably won't see this. WHY? Because this 5 min. "trailer" is actually the whole movie in 5 minute... ?!
And even if i watch it, it will be a huge deja vu thanks to this video.....
  • neal
The original film was brilliant in its simplicity, this movie is exactly what modern audiences will gobble up. Including myself. This is just another Keanu starring, Hollywood big budget movie with a familiar plot, NOT A REMAKE!
  • spacedog128
To anyone against a remake - and I do not promote this particular remake - but remaking "a classic" is to me the same as a new production of a Shakespeare play. You would never question a new take on "Hamlet" or "King Lear" - I feel that different actors on different sets with different direction are more than welcome to breathe different life into a script/story

However, there is a difference between a new vision of something, and churning out a redo of a known-to-be recognizable (or popular) film just for the sake of filling seats (a trend that is saddening to see).
  • Cue my continued rage at the godawful reverse-choir stinger sound effects used to punctuate the edits of these trailers. This painful deluge began with the trailers for Indiana Jones 4, and it moves forth to consume the earth. It will never eat, it will never sleep, it will never stop.
  • Jaybee U Tler
Weta makes good sword props and forty bazillion cgi orcs running around so densely that you couldn't tell what the hell yer lookin at anyway, thats about it..............

look at king kong to see how far they still have ta go. Looks like a crappy video game. plus keanu's stupid expression. real smart..... get keanu reeves to play an emotionless, pan faced character. he doesn't even have to act, that is his everyday demeanor.

    And really, giant balls?

is the military going to concoct a giant finger to scratch them into submission?????
  • BadWasabi
If someone told me that was Keanu Reeves playing Neo again, I'd believe them.
  • spikeshinizle
The first half of this trailer was quite promising, but then the camera started to zoom through wires and show things exploding...

I'm still hopeful that it'll turn out to be an enjoyable film, but a creepy, paranoid, morality tale (like the original)? I'm not so sure.
  • Andrew
Just echoing everyone else. I've given up on seeing this on the big screen. The original will not be done justice.

Gort would be the only thing that I will see this for (on DVD). Even though he looks "Silver Surfer-esque", he looks like a real threat (vaporizing soldiers, as opposed to just their guns then lurching threatening).

But there is a lot that looks like it taken straight from other invasion movies (Independence Day especially).
  • jordan
i think this movies might be good but i don't want to get to excited about it i hope there is a good story behind it but i can understad why fox puting out a 5 minit triler they had a relly bad year for movies for 2008 and this and Valkyrie is what 20 centy fox needs
  • John
like, you earth dude's are so bogus! me and my Wyld Stalyun Gort will go all heinous on your planet!
  • thomas040
to quote my acting teacher: “Acting is hard. If acting was easy, Keanu Reeves could do it”

    :)
  • John
I think the trailer looks really good. There is room to update and improve on the original, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they've done with this remake.
  • Caius
whats the name of the song played in teh beginning
  • Ford
    klaatu barada nikto

    this doesn't look good.
  • Supernova
Bashing Keanu Reeves, yay, way to go *rolling-eyes*

Seriously, you people have never seen any other movies than the Matrix, have you?
I'm fine with diversity in taste but stating the same all over again feels like a déjà vu of The Emperor's New Clothes to me.
(I don't even know why so many remake/Keanu-haters watch the trailer...actually, if *I'm* not interested in a thing - I don't give a sh*t. So why bother discussing?...waste of time.)
    /rant

Well, I've never seen the original before, so I won't be prejudiced on this one.
  • krackajap
/film now has 3 articles pertaining to remakes on the front page....
  • krackajap: The news is limited tonight, we're doing the best with what we're given.
  • krackajap
    Peter:

hahah understandable. I just find it funny how many remakes are being thrown around hollywood these days.
  • gocitizen
I've warmed to the idea that they are trying to remake the film, but I question the way they are doing it. At it's best, The Day the Earth Stood Still should be more like Soderburgh's Solaris and less like Roland Emerich's(sp) movie of the week. I can understand the fear in making this film "small", but I believe it would be better for it.

I have an "Abyss tidal wave" vibe. It worked in The Abyss, but that is because it played out on the edges of that film. Make the aliens and the tidal wave the primary story and you have this remake.

They will be going after Forbidden Planet next. Can that be forbidden?
  • skribble
    Video Not Available :(

So, i guess thats my only comment.............
  • It's just neat to bash a remake of a classic just to name yourself a culturally developped filmgoer. Come on, people! Sure the original was awesome, but there are many things that just weren't possible back then.

A movie tells a story, and one of the coolest things about it is the fact that you can tell stories that aren't possible in our world through visual effects. I happen to think that this remake updates the classic visually and thematically to our time, without disrespecting the original, and saying otherwise is just plain dumb. If it succeeds or not will only be seen when the movie comes out. Then you can bash the movie all you want.
