Outlander Book Series Coming to the Big Screen

Essential Pictures is developing a potential franchise of films based on Outlander, a series of six fantasy novels by Diana Gabaldon. Not to be confused with the potentially bad ass Alien / Viking movie of the same name, which seems to have gotten the shaft from The Weinstein Co.

Braveheart scribe Randall Wallace penned the script, which has already been sent out to potential directors. The goal is to begin production in Spring 2009. The first book in the series, titled Outlander, tells the story of Claire Randall, who travels through time to the eighteenth century Scottish Highlands. Here is the official plot synopsis from the book:

Claire Randall is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another… In 1945, Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon–when she innocently touches a boulder in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of our Lord…1743. Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire’s destiny in soon inextricably intertwined with Clan MacKenzie and the forbidden Castle Leoch. She is catapulted without warning into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life …and shatter her heart. For here, James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a passion so fierce and a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire…and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.

Sounds like your typical genre-rom story (ick… romantic genre… and you thought romantic comedies were bad). Unfortunately, with the rise of Twilight, there is a good chance that we’ll see more and more of these types of novels adapted for the big screen.

Is this the same series as Cross Stitch? I hated that stuff! I used to pay my ex out for reading that tripe.
  • sharon
same book, uk version is cross stitch

My wife loved this whole series. It doesn't make much sense to me, but she couldn't put any of the books down and they are not short books. I will say this, she hates romantic comedies and trite romance novels, so there must be something more here than meets the eye.
  • djf
I love this series! This would be great!
  • Killian
Hated this book... It's typical romantic drivel until about the last 200 pages when out of no where there is this rape/sodomy thing that goes on with James and this army commander. It's weird, depressing, and I never read any of the others. Count me out of the movie. Ugh...
  • frank
Killian, for you to only like the rape/sodomy scene in this book says something very profound about you. How can you not enjoy the deception, intrigue, humor, adventure and the amazing examples of honor, justice and injustice?

it's a shame that you didn't give the rest of the series a chance. claire jamie and many other people go through much more gruesome misadventures than this that you seem to be quite interested in and the rest of the series (bar the the third book, Voyager) is really not at all romancy. much more like historical fiction.

I love the books!! They are action packed and there is love story that is epic. There is something for men and women.... perfect movie material. I can't wait to see the movie(s)!

I've loved the Jamie and Claire series since I read the first book over 10 years ago! I'm so excited to hear a movie will be possible soon. There is alot of interesting U.S. and Scottish history interwoven with the main story line. These characters were so real to me, I hate see the last book get published (but also anticipate it greatly, hurry up, Diana!) This love story of Jamie and Claire is incredibly romantic and heartbreaking and believable. To all the people that are involved with the movie: PLEASE, cast someone so sizzling hot for the part of Jamie; make that actor BE Jamie, someone who looks so delicious in a kilt, with eyes that say "you're mine, forever", and most importantly, make sure he has a smile that makes us women melt in our seats at the theaters. A thousand cheers from me! Hooray!!

Don't judge OUTLANDER unless you've actually completed the first book in the series, at least. Outlander is not a mere "Romance novel" -- it has elements of adventure, action (think Braveheart), time-travel, humour, and drama. It's well-written and well-researched. You really do get to travel back in time. And Jamie Fraser is the perfect man. You gents could learn a thing or two from him.
  • racheall
I think when people hear that the book is about time travel it turns them off. I actually thought the same thing before I read Outlander. These books are amazingly well written and I get lost in them. I will be homesick when I finish the last one. Will have to put them away and read again later.

This is the best book series I've read and I'm not into the bodice-ripping novels, which this isn't. Yes, there are some sex scenes, but that is only a part of the grander story. If you liked Rob Roy or Braveheart, then Outlander is your kind of story. Diana Gabaldon is so gifted- she makes all of the characters feel real and sucks you into their situations. I have cried reading parts of these books and have become more interested in real Scottish and American history as a result. Mrs. Gabaldon has done her research and it shows. Rich with historical history, tragedy, comedy and love, it is an awesome series worth reading numerous times! I've found myself thinking about some of the stories and characters long after putting the books down because they were so interesting and seem so real. The movie(s) will never be able to do the books justice, but still I can't wait to see at least one made! Please say no to Keira Knightley as Claire- that will ensure that the movie is a stinker! She is too skinny and not at all how Diana described Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser! Please cast for the right fit for the actors and for the fans, not for the Hollywood in-crowd!
  • sharon
Keira Knightley is too young to play Claire.....and way too skinny
  • Elizabeth
I truly love this book series and it simply has to be made into movies!!!! I am obsessed with these books and Jamie Fraser!!!! The relationship between Jamie & Claire is so beautiful!!! It's every woman's dream !!!!You have to make these books into movies!!!!I wiill definitely see them & buy them should they come out on video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE MAKE THE MOVIES!!!!!!!!__Elizabeth
  • Helen P
I'm reading this series for the seventh time. I think that each book could be made into a series, there is so much there. My adrenalin was racing round as I was reading each new adventurous twist to the story. The series could run.. and run.. and run ..
  • Laura
I agree. I'm excited they're finally making the movie, but not expecting much out of it. How can one possibly tell THAT story right in 2 1/2 hours? Now if they made into a series... that would be something!!
  • Brandy Kerr
I can not wait to see this book come to the big screen! I'm so freaking excited. The books are amazing i've gotten like eight people to read them whole all agree. This is not a cheesey romance. It does have the Romance but none off that too mushy awful trite, it is action packed and totally keeps you wanting more. All i have to say is PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make the movie it is completely awesome.
  • amy
This is one of the best historical romance series I have ever read. There are few authors I have read that stand up to Diana Gabaldon. Having a movie made out of this series is like having a dream come true to many people, myself included. I only hope the producers and director can capture the magic that is Jamie and Claire.
  • Jean
Gabriel Aubrey is Jamie he is exactly as I imagined how Jamie would look
  • TYM
Incredible series! AND I'M A DUDE! LOL Braveheart-ish is simular but this is cooler on many levels. Hope Dianna can keep Hollywood on a leash so they make this series the right way. What I wouldn't give to be an extra in that series!! Jamie has the greatest sense of humor in the way he looks at some things. Looking forward to seeing all the books or most of the story thus far (2009) be on the big screen!
  • Jay
It is not a genre love story it is THE love story.
  • melissa0914
Has anything more happened with this???????????? I would love it if they made the movie! These books are very good... there is some disturbing scenes in Outlander w/ rape/sodomy that I hope kind of gets toned down... that almost made me stop reading the next ones because it was so over the top... Incredibly disgusting discriptions. I can handle rape scenes in books, but this was on a whole different level. But besides that, the whole series is incredible and I think would be a great movie!
  • melissa0914
Also for casting: I hope Rachel McAdams would get considered for Claire. She would be perfect. She's also done other movies that show her at different ages (The Notebook, next The Time Traveler's Wife).

For Jamie...I can't think of anyone... Maybe someone new?? As much as I'd like Gerard Butler to do it (if they could make him a convincing red head??) he's too old to play a 23 year old Jamie... He could pull him off in the next books when he's 43 and up but I'd rather they kept the same actors if they do more than one...
  • judith watt
i realy think the books are great, would love to see them as a movie hope hollywood can do them justice, and pick actors who fit the parts and arn't just box office draws
  • Mandernach
Braveheart cannot compare to "Outlander" if it is cast and directed correctly, much less Twilight. It would have to be at least an 10-16 hour HBO special in order to come close to the book. Twilight is a silly teenager's movie. "Outlander" is every man's story only better and every person's dream of adventure!
  • Collette
Wonderful news. After Twight I found this novel and can't seem to put it down. It has it all, drama, romance, action, suspense. Lord of the Rings potential.
  • vonjaymee
Has anyone ever consider Alex Kingston to play Claire? She played the British doctor on ER in 1999. She might be too old now but wasn't Claire like 35 when she meets Jamie. I would have love to see Gerard Butler play Jamie but he is now too old as well. Unless they can do a Benjamin Button on him. I do like Kevin Mckidd but everybody goes, "EEWW!" I tell them they haven't seen him in a love scene with Sandra Oh on Grey's. That was really nicely done. I just hope they get the right actors and actresses to play the roles.

My fave series of books ever! Every time we visit Scotland we try to location spot. Going again in two weeks time, already planning where to go and see!

I personally think it should be handled the same way as the BBC mini series of Pride and Prejudice. Te BBC did a million times better job than the makers of the film!

I hope these movies do come out, but please stay true to the books.
  • njeanne
I am reading these books for the first time, my mother for the second. Its hard to find time in between work and a 2 year old to read but every free moment I have my nose is stuck in these books. I love them. My mom and I go back and forth on the cast. We both love Kate Winslet for Claire. And my mom likes Jim Caviezel for Jamie. All I know is he has to has to be strong and have amazing blues eyes and be able to do a realistic accent.
Looking forward to a movie night when this comes out
  • melissa0914
Hi njeanne... So I looked up Jim Caviezel and thought, hey he could work!! Then I read about him a little bit... he refuses to do love scenes in movies... so yeah he would NOT work for this series :-)
  • Heather
The thought of a movie is interesting, but I don't think it will ever live up to the imagery-and length-of the book. How often do we see a movie adaptation of a book and say 'the book was better'. I think the same will happen with Outlander. It's a great book - and should stay that way. I don't think a Jamie Fraser exists anywhere, and therefore would be nearly impossible to cast.
    Just my 2 cents....

I have just discovered the first book, Outlander and I absolutely love it!! The action keeps the story moving along, and I never really knew where the story line was going. I've read the synopsis of the other books and I think I am going to pass, too much drama for me, but I really wish instead of a movie they would make it into a series (come on HBO!!! Don't you recognize a hit when you see one!!!)
  • CJ Mandernach
I first read Outlander 15 years ago and now have read the entire series 7 or 8 times, among my other favorite authors such as Michael Crichton, Dan Brown, Nathaniel Hawthorne etc., I can tell you that your comment about the sequels seeming to be "too much drama" is incorrect if you like Outlander. As you read these books you will think the book you are currently reading is your favorite and then change your mind as you get into the next book. The only book that is difficult to get into is Fiery Cross (#5) and that is because you must meet many new characters. Once into it you will again think it is your favorite.
  • Tina
No one thought The Lord of the Rings could be done as a movie either. This story is so awe inspiring that someone has to try. Imagine the strength of character that Claire has to have to go through so much. I just finished the 7th book after reading the series twice and still would read it again all over. Some of the characters discussed such as Liam Neison would be perfect! The characters need to be true to the times.
  • Lisa
I loved this series and only found out about the 7th book by accident when I picked up the book in a shop because of the cool colours on the cover!! Only thing I didn't like is I felt the 6th book had finished the series and now there has to be a 8th book to finish of what happens with Claire and Jamie, Fergus and his family, Jenny and most importantly, Roger coming back through the stones thinking he is following Jem, and Brianna having to deal with Rob holding Jem hostage. I just finished it this morning and feel like I am hanging....
  • Lisa Beard
I too have just finished this book and can not wait for the 8th in the series. We can't leave Jem in the mountain and Roger having gone in the stones and the now Jamie-Claire-John marriage and now that William has found out his real father...... I'm waiting very impatiently.......
  • Elisa
I so agree with you, I just finished it too and can't wait.
  • RACHEALL
Do not ever compare the Outlander series to Twilight! Ridiculous! Can you read?
  • C. Smith
That would be great but I think as long as the books are they would to better as a series. HBO are you listening?
  • Kimberly
I would love to see this series put onto the screen. It would be wonderful to see the well researched depiction of historic events. My husband hates reading a series, but after I had read the first 4 in Diana Gabaldon's series, he read them back to back, too! I think that anyone who enjoys sci-fi (time travel) and action would see this movie/franchise and be well pleased. DH has asked me several times if there was word of a movie. Needless to say, my sisters and female friends also enjoyed this story.
Please update, let us know if a good show is coming!
  • Charlotte
I have loved the series for years now. Bought hard bound books so that I can read them again and again. I am hoping that movie(s) will do them justice. Hopefully they will make all of the books in a quick series like they did with Lord of the Rings, so the actors will remain the same. Can't wait to see!
