Mark Millar is known for telling stories, on and off the page. For the last year he’s been going around saying he is working with an unnamed big director on a pitch for Superman. While I’m not against the idea of a Millar-penned Superman movie, I just don’t believe it. But Millar keeps on talking to anyone who will listen, and this time tells Empire Magazine that his pitch is for an 8-hour saga told over the course of three films, each which he hopes would be released one year apart.

“It’s gonna be like Michael Corleone in the Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him. The Dark Knight showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now.”

Millar certainly knows how to get the fanboy inside me excited, but I just don’t see it happening. Especially the gigantic ending he sees for the new trilogy:

“I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers.”

I somehow doubt Warner Bros would ever even consider that ending, as cool as it might be in concept. You have to remember, Warner Bros cares about the character as a franchise, and a franchise can’t exist if it has a finite conclusion.

8 hours. Woah. 4 movies, then..?
  • MrCavanagh
I'd rather watch a 24 hour marathon of Superman 4 than sit through an 8 hour trilogy written by Millar.
  • Where do I sign the pettition for this to get made?
  • danny bell
    whoah

    quite frankly, that sounds awesome!

(but i have to agree, the very finite ending will not appeal to warner bros.....)

(even though it sounds really, really, really cool, i dont think it would fly)

even so, im interested in the rest of what his script has to offer, and the concept of a rolling trilogy of films is a good one for a superhero franchise.

(and mark millar is an awesome writer too, so i guess its safe hands.....)

    ;-D

p.s, keep our brandon in the lead role

he filled a pair of big red boots very well last time, even though the films wasnt so super.....
  • John
You know who would I like to see play Superman? Jon Hamm, a.k.a. Don Draper. He would be awesome.
  • scott
I've always thought Superman was a boring character. Millar would have to do an incredible job in redefining the character to get me to even watch even two hours of Superman. I have to admit though, that ending is pretty cool.
  • j
Awesome idea! But WB would never allow the ending. I really hope they let Millar write it!
  • PowerfulDog
This is the worst idea I've ever heard.
  • Oi Vey
Mark Millar is a walking piece of Hyperbole, it's not even funny anymore.
  • Henry Jones Jr
I have to disagree with the premise that the ending would never get past Warner Bros because they're looking for a franchise. Superman himself IS the franchise, not whatever a current director's take on the character is. Just like there was room for Burton's Batman and Nolan's Batman, Millar's take on Superman for three movies wouldn't prevent someone else from taking it in another direction after that. Not only that, but since when is three movies not considered a franchise? I think Warner Bros would be perfectly happy with three successful Superman movies. Especially considering what happened with Superman Returns.
  • Goobity
So Superman is going to sit around and mope for millions of years, after all life on Earth is extinct? Couldn't he just fly off to another planet that has a healthy yellow sun?
  • Sounds like an epic movie series of the superman saga!
    They should do it...
  • Arch Stanton
wow, another superhero origin movie? pitiful.

    Never. Gonna. Happen.
  • Captain Awesome
I hope they show one or two ;) ;) scenes with Lois and she getting killed as a result.

@ Vile82 >> your mom was an epic saga

On a more serious note, you cannot compare crap like superman with godlike batman franchise. Besides Mark, being a Marval hippie, will not even get to lick the carpet of DC cleaner's union room!
  • Lol...i stand by my words...
  • septemer11th
    peter.
i also have to disagree with you that warner brothers wouldnt even considering that ending.
i dont think its ridiculous at all have a finite ending to a planned trilogy.
i would much much rather see a well done trilogy, then a bunch of random chapters like what spiderman is doing.
the main thing behind this is that it is designed for a new beginning, middle, and end. not just made entirely to cash in on another superhero and see how far it can go. especially with the success of the dark knight, im sure studios will be much more open to this. that being said, i still dont like superman and dont care if this is made or not.
  • "All right...that joke is going to be good because
I'm going to take all the words out and add new words.
    That joke will be fixed."

  • >> What do I like about this?
    - The idea has something to offer - a full finished story of Superman for the first time in the history of the character. I have to admit that it has a potential.

    >> Why this will suck so bad?
    - The idea is great, yes, but... how the hell is he going to put a 80 years of legacy in just 8 hours (3 movies)?! I'm sorry, but whatever Millar wants to do it's just impossible to have it all from the Superman's original story and have a decent plots for the movies in the same time. It's just too much.
    - And second of all... he just gave us the ending! What a ... ?! I don't see a point to pay to see a short version of a story, of which I already know the ending.

So in the end... I'll feel the same way, I'd felt when I watched "Babylon A.D.",... or at least what the half of the movie, they gave us.
    Nope...bad idea Millar!
  • Jud
Boring and stupid. Why oh why does Superman have to get all serious and dark like the new Batman installments? Sure Superman Returns wasn't amazing, but Bryan Singer is an amazing filmmaker...the proof is in his credits. I don't see why he doesn't get another crack at it, after all he always promised he'd go Wrath of Kahn in the sequel, and I believe it. I trust Bryan Singer with moving the Superman story forward a hell of a lot more than I trust Mark Millar with it.
  • inzader
I have a boner... This would be epic... and wonderful.
I don't understand the hate. But it think waner bros. would be all for 3 movies, i mean if they make like 200$ million each at least, that's pretty kick ass.
  • is that the milf hunter?
  • Anna
Bryan Singer's sequel is supposed to come out in 2011. It would be too close together to restart the series again.
  • whatever
    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaahhh!!!

This is a hell of a challenge for anyone to tackle. With Batman, what was nolan up against? Burton's rather decent first movie and his wacky second one? Not that hard to surpass. But Singer knew... he knew he couldn't beat the stars that aligned to create the massively near perfect superman the movie, so what did he do? Aped it. Drank in every scene, every line, every little thing and what we got was a movie unsure of itself like an awkward kid learning to ride a bike for the first time. WB's between a rock and another rock here. They tried to piggy back on the original superman and look what happened.

I say go for it. It might end up another smallville or another lois and clark adventures, but it's time. We've put the old franchise to bed well enough and it's time to start anew. No williams theme, just whatever works for a new superman. Don't be scared, WB.
  • dave
Why wouldn't Warner Brothers choose this direction after the success of the batman reboot? Reboots will be the trend going forward because you can always start over. Three films would be a decent franchise and potentially avoid the shit that Spider-Man has become. I'm stoked for Millar's ending.
  • Superman Returns fans
I want The Man of Steel!
    Brandon Routh is SUPERMAN!
  • Jaybee U Tler
    Er...........

    ...................Peter?

How is that a "finite" ending????? A supernova of the sun ain't gonna happen for a few million years. At any time warner can make more movies about his adventures any of those hundreds of thousands of years in between.

    Are you okay?

Booo, Peter and his lack of common sense!
  • whatever
I hope we find another earth by the time our sun blows up.

    Dear Warner Brothers,

I spent $90 on comics today. I'm a comic addict. It is in my opinion that this sounds amazing. HOWEVER, please talk to Geoff Johns before anybody signs anything, and give him a chance first. Let him pitch a story. He is writing the best Superman comics in the past 20 years, and it would be terrible to miss out on his thoughts. Grant Morrison's run was wonderful, but a bit too sci-fi for the more realistic Dark Knight approach. Talk to Johns, just to make sure you've got the best possible Superman story possible. Miller would do an amazing job, just make sure there isn't something more amazing out there.

that ending sounds magnificent. truly wonderful. best of luck to ya, mr. millar.
  • shazaaaam!
alone on a planet, red sun??? super..nova WHAT?????
  • detective comic
I thought about that last quote for 60 seconds and it actually sounds pretty interesting if you read it twice!
  • Andrew
I've been intrigued with this idea ever since I heard it a few months back.

I still like Millar's overall vision. The man wrote "Superman: Red Son". I have a decent amount of trust in his knowledge of Superman.

I remain nervous about how Warner Bros. may shape the film. I hope the studio doesn't try to make it "darker" just because it worked with Batman, but I also hope it isn't "tame" like Superman Returns was.
  • detective comic
    I have a few questions:

#1 If he's alone by himself for billlions of years waiting, does that mean it will be like wall-e until the sun explodes?

#2 What about aging, he still ages will he look like the krypt keeper but have the energy of a hyperactive kindergartner?

#3 what about all those crazy villains that are immmortal like darkseid, braniac ?

    what about lois lane?

will he be like dracule, living forever watching everybody around him DIE and have a new girlfriend once every 75 years??

What the league of super heroes, the Justice league and all the events that happen. You would think Martian Manhunter would be along with him the whole while after all he doens't age on earth.

what about if a comet came towards earth 1 billion years from now the size of 100 earths, would he be able to stop it after beeing 1 billion years old and frail looking??

why would he even bother staying on earth after the 1 millionth year. Or when mankind is extinct? It's not like he doesn't have time to fly to a nother galaxy and seach for other life

what about those future superheroes and super villains that have powers like his like supergirl, will she live forever too?

....My point is, the deeper you make a movie like that ,the more questions one would wonder and the more plot holes you notice when you watch it again. Keep it simple and true to the source don't do a looooong ass coming of age story in a movie like that unless it's a tv show that stays on for like 10 years you couldn't possibly have time to explain the story of superman and do that in 8 hours.
  • da joka'
    @detetive comic ur weird!!

I read y our oddly worded questions a 2nd time kid and you raise some interesting points!
  • amalalgam
@ DetectiveComic I like the Justice league question and the dracula and Darkseid questions. Oh and the question about why would he stay on earth after mankind is extict why not just leave earth and search for another galaxy. It's something Ironic about that .Seeing as how that's how his father Jor-el got him to earth.

Darkseid is a time traveler why wouldn't he make superman's life a living hell? Don't make the movie too sci-fi
  • 90210 typa-of-hoe!
lol@ the Wall-E comparison. So true!
  • That sounds like a novel idea that Millar has, but it doesn't sound like something that would fit into the overall character of Superman. In fact, Singer's Superman didn't fit into the character either:

"Oh, I'm Superman and I'm going to spy on the my ex-girlfriend with my stalker vision."

"And I'm a father?!" *cue sitcom music*

I will say that in Kingdom Come Bruce Wayne and the rest of the Justice League aged like normal humans would. But all Clark Kent had were a few gray hairs, so I can see a Kryptonian living for a millennium or two.
  • Pill
I think the last kind of Superman movie we need is one that involves an origin story. Everyone and their grandma knows where Clark Kent came from and how he became Superman, and frankly its not all that interesting.

I always wished for a Superman movie treated in a sort of classical pulpish way, ala Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.
  • Wall•E Plays Pong
As long as there is still optimistic and fun elements in this, I would be all for it. Sounds incredibly cool.
  • marz
im still waiting on this batman vs. superman thing.how would that work..the versus part.what, they compete to see how many people they can save?jokes aside..that does sound good visualy but only if they find a different villian instead of that damn boring, non-powers, heap of meat hump we call lex luther.
  • Eric R.
Eh...why not? Nothing else has worked so far. Oh and I like the ending for the movie. I don't beleive a dark tone for Superman is needed, just a mature tone. After all there have been comics on Superman which portrayed him as a man with inner turmoil. How about his hatred of Darkseid, don't you all think that in itself is dark? Superman can be dark, not dark like Batman, but he does experience emotions. So let's the cut the keanu reeves, deadpan emotion bullshit act here. Show Supes with real emtion ( and no I don't mean stalker, obsessive love emotion for lois like in Byran singer's film), but anger, fear, resentment, the whole works! Let's explore a side of Superman that has not been filmed before. And yes, no more John Williams theme as well, as much as I love it, let's get a fresh take on the opening credits theme, something that will compliment the tone of the film.
  • Panda
and one really shit thing about superman from the new movie is.. theyre not portraying him as a GOD. HE could DO ANYTHING. yet they make him almost depressed like. HES SUPERMAN MAN!
  • Panda
Ah I just posted a comment with a wiki-link.. dint get thru.
But what I said was, the whole 'last person alive' thing was done with Hulk - The end check it out on wiki. Where the hulk is the only person alive on earth, a hundred years after nuclear fallout, with cockroaches the only things on the planet. A robot arrives from space to catalog humanity's last minutes, as bruce banner dies.. so if the hulk transforms back, hes dead. Its really worth checking!
  • INS
Yeah, not sure about this. Hate movies like Lord of the Rings where it just ends after 3 hrs of building and then nothing....I only watched the first one and didnt even bother with the rest, wast of my time.

They should just take a page from Superman the Animated Series, shit is better than 99.99999% of any other Superman tv show/movie in recent years

Take a villain like Metallo and give it a Hulk/Iron Man type Summer Blockbuster feel and I'd be happy with that
  • Dr.Doc
yeah i think they should use Metallo too, that would be cool

they should take Richard from SR, he is all pissed cuz Lois loves Superman not him and he realizes the Kid is Supes not his, have him turn to Lex Luthor for help & Lex pays for his experimental operation to turn him into Metallo

BAM! throw in Brainiac taking over the new krypton continent in space w/ plans for earth (or just take his current arc from Action comics by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank, it was phenomenol)

and BOOM! u got a kickass sequel to SR entitled Superman: The Man of Steel
  • seanovan
    Sounds great.

Even if he dies in the future when the sun goes nova, they can reboot him again in 10 years.
  • Greggory Basore
Well if Warners could be talked into the obvious solution to the dilema of ending with Supes dying would be... another reboot a couple years after the third movie. That'd be another new franchise of movies to take forward.

Also I like the idea of thre movies totaling 8 hours, but if Hollywood is going to keep on giving us longer movies then for fucks sake bring back intermissions.
  • Scientist Steve
Considering the Sun will never supernova, fuck this premise.
