New Photos from Sam Raimi’s Drag Me to Hell

Earlier today, MTV released four new photos from Drag Me to Hell, Sam Raimi’s return to the horror film genre. For one reason or another, we’ve barely covered this film on /Film, so with Halloween on the horizon, I thought now might be as good of time as any other.

Co-written by Raimi with his brother Ivan, Drag Me to Hell tels the story of a young woman who isdesperate to break an evil curse. Alison Lohman stars as Christine Brown, “an ambitious L.A. loan officer with a charming boyfriend, professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long). Life is good until the mysterious Mrs. Ganush (Lorna Raver) arrives at the bank to beg for an extension on her home loan. Christine denies the extension to impress her boss, Mr. Jacks (David Paymer), shaming Mrs. Ganush and dispossessing her of her home. In retaliation, the old woman places the powerful curse of the Lamia on Christine, transforming her life into a living hell. Haunted by an evil spirit and misunderstood by a skeptical boyfriend, she seeks the aid of seer Rham Jas (Dileep Rao) to save her soul from eternal damnation. To help the shattered Christine return her life to normal, the psychic sets her on a frantic course to reverse the spell. As evil forces close in, Christine must face the unthinkable: how far will she go to break free of the curse?”

Raimi’s name will have me at the theater on opening night, but I’ve never been a fan of stories having to do with curses and such. And the set of photos released thus far look nothing beyond the average modern horror film.

Raimi describes the film as a chance to get back to his roots and make a small movie: “This script was one I wrote with my brother many years ago, but we couldn’t get the money to make it with the director we wanted at the time. I decided it would be a great change for me to get back to the basics of filmmaking, a chance to work with a smaller budget and challenge myself with the more old-fashioned ways — not being able to afford a crane every day, covering five or six pages of material every day, back to those basics of less luxurious filmmaking. I thought that would be refreshing.”

Head on over to MTV for Sam’s full interview, and click on the photos to above them in higher resolution on MTV. Drag Me To Hell hits theaters on May 29th 2009.

  • Ouhhh...sounds like a good rental.
  • Sam Raimi + Horror = I'm there!

I'm assuming this will be a return for Raimi...The Gift was okay but it wasn't as good as The Quick and The Dead or Army of Darkness....It's about time that he can leave the Spider-man series and hopefully make another quality film...That clip that was released online is very much "Evil Dead"...so I'm looking forward to this...although those images of Allison and Justin look like recycled Spider-man clothes and sets

am i the only one who really enjoyed alison lohman's performance in matchstick men? i never would have known she was in her mid 20's when it was made. that movie overall i feel is more underrated than it should be, but i feel like she hasn't been in too much since then.

as for the movie itself i really have full confidence in this movie being a fun return to basics for raimi.

Seeing that witch/hag makes me wish Raimi hadn't went with the Power Ranger Goblin...
  • The questions is: What role will Bruce Campell have?
  • Josh
I don't think Bruce makes an appearance in this one. He was too busy filming Burn Notice.

Ever since I saw a clip of this movie back in Comic Con, I been excited. It looks like it will deliver a good scare next year. I can't wait.
  • Daniel
Is it just me or does that older zombie-like lady look like someone from shaun of the dead?
  • j
Totally agree with Jordan. Im hopeful for this, I mean its Raimi it will be his come back after S3. Not too impressed by photos except the top left corner one, damn she is hot!
  • Christopher Marc
    @Jordan

I agree I enjoyed her in Matchstick Men as well and it is an underrated film
  • south texas terror
    did I read that right?
Justin Long as a professor, that performance should provide enough scares.
  • Autosuggestion
Agreed on not being a big fan of curse movies, but I'll be interested given Raimi's involvement. That said.... "Professor Clay Dalton (Justin Long)" ..... whaaaaaaaat?!?
  • joshmayhood
Ha. Yes...Justin Long's professor is almost as good as Tara Reid playing a scientist.
  • Mike
Ellen Page was signed on to play Lohman’s role at one point, but she had to drop out because the strick caused too many of her projects to be filming at the sametime.
  • sean coates
well the footage from comic con has me wanting to see this flick asap!!!
  • Reggie
The clips they showed at the comic con were AWESOME. It wasn't scary as much as disgusting and funny. It seems like he went back to his Evil Dead 2 roots for this one, and that makes me excited as all hell!
  • gocitizen
I'm all in. I really liked Lohman in MM and i've been looking forward to her being in something else I am interested in.

Aren't the Evil Dead films "curse movies"? How can you not like that? :)
  • jamie
    justin long?

    as a professor?

lol, if you want to cast like that then they should hire seth rogen and have him play a dean

what the heck is justin long's appeal anyway?
  • Meli
I'm looking forward to seeing some new from Raimi. The picture of the old lady has an Evil Dead feel, definitely.
  • Goro
i'll see this only if Justin Long (a) speaks without sttttttammmmmering and (b) gets killed.
