Underworld: Rise of the Lycans Movie Trailer

I fell asleep in the movie theater while watching the first Underworld film. It was a point in my life when I was working an overnight shift. Friday and Saturdays were my nights off, and I often attempted to get back to a normal sleeping schedule for the weekend, which rarely worked. I have a feeling that I still wouldn’t have enjoyed the film even if I had remained awake for the entire thing. I never gave it a second chance. I never saw the sequel. But I did see the trailer for the sequel, and I think thats all I really needed to see.

Patrick TatopoulosUnderworld prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans doesn’t look any better. Oh, and did I mention that before this, the director was a costume designer and special effects makeup artist? But I know there are many people who enjoyed the first two movies, who are interested to see the trailer for the third film. Heck, enough people had to see these films to warrant a trilogy, right? You can watch the trailer below, and please explain to me why I am missing out.

Official Plot Synopsis: The prequel story traces the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires known as Death Dealers and their onetime slaves, the Lycans. In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian (Michael Sheen) emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Bill Nighy), the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.

Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans hits theaters on January 23rd 2009.

  • i (dont) like how they used the same marilyn manson song that is in the max payne trailer.

the main actress is hot, maybe even hot enough to warrant watching it on HBO in 2 years.
  • Jay Selis
Yea, Peter you are right. this movie looks really bad. All i see here is terrible CGI and piss poor action sequences. This might actually be one of the worst sequels ever made.

I think Rhona Mitra is quite attractive but this movie looks totally unattravitve.

This movie can suck my left nut!
  • Well i'd already watched both of them...now leaves the third.
  • Josh
I'm apparently one of the few people that actually incredibly enjoys these films and will watch this the day it is released.
  • Yorel
I really enjoyed the first one.
    The second one is garbage.
    and now a third one?

They should have stopped making new ones after white wolf sued them.
  • I love the idea of the first movie...but it was the horrible acting/action/effects and all around boringness that made me hate the movie.

Can't believe they've actually made enough $$ to warrent a third movie.
  • Joe
Eh... hundreds of armored werewolves charging on the warpath...

I'm not writing this one off completely, but lack of Beckinsale hurts it for me.
  • Well I'm also one of the few here (obviously) who thinks, that the first two movies was great and this one will be not far behind...
There aren't many vampire/werewolf movies, so I think that making more is actually a good think. And besides it could have been a lot worse than that.
  • Jonathan
I dunno. Looks decent. I really liked the first two, and this one might live up to the others.
  • Rockme
loved the first two, this seems forced and uninteresting
  • Goldfoot
While I don't agree with you, Peter, on the first movie, or even the second, I think I won't be seeing this. The story was already told in brief flashbacks. This movie just looks like filler and an excuse to use CGI and action.
  • There's nothing about this tailer that really jumps out at me and forces me to be interested in it. Nothing like there was in the trailers for the other Underworld films. There's no shot of Bekinsale blasting through the floor, executing some epic jump or unzipping her leather jumpsuit. There's no shot in this trailer to really sell it beyond the title card saying, "you saw the first two... there's another one now!"

I found the first Underworld to be cluttered. The second one, benefited a lot from having it focus on two characters on the run. The action was bigger, the larger story even made more sense with a little space. It's amazing what some focus can do.

Rhona Mitra is a welcome addition and Rise gives more screen time to Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy which is always a good thing... there's just nothign leaping out at me other than the cast list. Not yet anyway.
  • The one reason to see Underworld Evolution is that extremely hot Kate Beckinsale sex scene...
  • Juansmith
Gotta disagree on the second one... It was way better than the snooze-fest that was the first.

Don't think I'll be seeing this though.
  • Vobe
this movie looks empty.. hmm what's missing? ah! a proper plot, cast, story and direction.. propably missed out on a bunch of stuff, but the bottomline is that this movie looks like shit.. no wait, it is shit.
  • kfizz
It takes what the 2nd one only did right I the first part with the ware wolves in the past. So it takes out all the stupid guns and the emo goth wanabe vampires. Ware wolves were the best part plus they look better in this one then the first and 2nd one. Plus they have a strong cast well people you know from the first one. The thing that put me off was the song from max payen but this trailer was cut before the movie came out. So i guess they did not know it would be with the stigma of that meh movie.
  • KeanE
I don't mind the underworld movies, I always liked them cause of Kate Beckinsale's cute self...this doesn't look too bad
  • Moviola
I don't understand why they didn't just buy the rights to Vampire or White Wolf table top RPGs and make a movie out of that. It couldn't have been worse than D&D the movie. Underworld is like an offbrand of that stuff. I think what especially turned me off when I saw the first one is that the vampires didn't drink blood from people. It wasn't gorey at all really. Oh, yeah, they drank blood from blood banks. Snore. Not a good movie, but I don't see why the idea itself couldn't have been done well.
  • Kramit the Frog
All three are written by the big black dude that plays one of the lycans, he's huge you can't miss him, anyway.... So at least there's continuity right?

I think it'll be a popcorn movie, more entertaining than the PG garbage that has been flooding Hollywood these days (Die Hard 4?!?!) and worth a rental, or maybe even a matinee.
  • TestType
I enjoyed the first one some years back, attempted to watch the second one recently but since it relies heavily on events from the first film which I could not recall, I gave up. This was implemented through a series of flashbacks and references from the first film with little or no attempt to explain them or put in context, so I had no idea what was going in the events of the film nor the flashbacks from the first one. Very bad narrative I must say.

That and the overly strong blue hue of the film made mer bored after about 5 minutes.
  • brandon
peter - You just talked shit about the underworld movies but you are going to sit though the saw marathon (the first 1 was the only one worth watching)

    Color me confused.
  • j
Stupid... The first two sucked. I think Len Weisman is an ok director though, he has style but the scripts sucked, I did enjoy DH 4.0, I definitely liked the UNRATED version more though. I hope he does a good job with GEARS.
  • Dave
The first Saw was garbage. Wait, so were the other four.
  • jamie
    rhona mitra is really hot

but these underworld movies are the kind of movies i would be constantly checking the color settings on my tv, way too blue
  • brandon: if there was an underworld marathon, i'd probably go to that too :P I love movie marathons, especially when I havent seen the movies. I've only seen the first two SAW films and I actually liked the first film a lot, the second was okay. I have a feeling it goes downhill from here though
  • matt
michael sheen was in so many oscar quality movies and now he does this? what is he thinking? how much did they pay him?
  • Josh
Why don't the Licens just move somewhere else? If they are under such persecution maybe they should just move to another country. Horrible trailer, won't be seeing.
  • JiveTurkey
Underworld movies have that EuroTrash kinda feel...I hope someday Blade kills em all.
  • cellchild
Rhona Mitra is hot but the whole film feels like straight-to-dvd
  • brandon
Peter: it does go downhill from there, i like you like the first one and have defended it on multiple occasions, it is actually the indie-thriller that could. Once it became a franchise it lost it's way. the second one was entertaining, but pointless and i stopped halfway through the third.

    have fun at the marathon.
  • Adrian Veidt
Eh. I liked the 1st Underworld better than the second. Not feeling this one though. The third should have been Beckinsale and Speedman in New York, still on run from the coven and having to fight vamps. Seems like Mitra is trying to be the cult-sci-fi action chick (Skinwalkers, Doomsday). Good move, she can do conventions too and get paid that way.
  • Fir3Wolf
I enjoyed both movies. The second one was not as good as the first but still a pretty cool movie. This one actually kinda looks pretty bad, I'll probably see it but not with high hopes and yea the CG in this movie is not that great either.
  • Travis
The one thing this movie looks like it has going for it is its medieval setting. At least if the film is set before guns we won't have to suffer through the horrible plot point that are "light bullets". The only thing more overdone than vampires these days seems to be the inclusion of werewolves into vampire stories. When can we just sit down and put this genre to bed. I am getting sick of so many vampire movies from these noble warlike vampires, to the feral Bram Stroker type, to worst of all the tweentacular "Twilight"-esque, "I just fell in love with a vampire dreck." The first two films were awful, this genre is awful, this movie will be awful refuse to give Hollywood your money for this...it is pathetic.
  • No Kate Beckinsdale no watch.....
  • Am i really the only one who thinks this looks way cool? I loved the first one and i really enjoyed the second one too. The only problem i have with this one is that Beckinsale isnt back. I dont think Mitra can fill her shoes. But still, it looks awesome.
I'm a huge fan of Bill Nighy and he's perfect for the role of Viktor.
  • Tripplo
Not only will I watch it, but i'll have to buy it to complete my set :)

Very disappointed that the two original actors are not back. I dont see the point of a prequel when the history has already been explained and shown in the first two films.

It'll still be fun to watch, and I am excited to see it regardless of its pitfalls.
  • ilves
    Want Beckinsale...

But anyway, anyone who has seen the first two movies (or even just hte first one) basically knows how this is going to turn out

    *spoiler warning*

Bill Nighy kills his daughter along with the unborn child and starts a centuries long feud between the two groups. Basically they're just filling in the small details of what led up to that and milking the franchise. I did like the first movie though.
  • Benjamin Wright
"Oh, and did I mention that before this, the director was a costume designer and special effects makeup artist?"

....Yeah, it's stupid to give anyone new jobs on movies. I mean even people like costume designers who usually work close with both the directors of films, and the actors. I mean...they wouldn't really know their right foot from their left HAHAHAHAHAH! In a perfect world, this would be set in the Nolanverse.
  • Elissa
I liked the first film. Once you get past the inherent cheesiness of the whole vampire/werewolf thing, the themes in the movie are actually quite socially relevant. Especially the idea that current generations are left fighting their fathers' or grandfathers' wars, for reasons so archaic or mundane that they've been lost to time. As well as the willingness of individuals to pick up swords in battles they honestly don't understand, based simply upon a shared (and flawed) ideology.

That being said, I still have no interest in seeing the second one or the new one.
  • The Second
I didn't like the use of If I Was Your Vampire in this trailer either...only because it was in the Max Payne trailer. Who knows who selected it first? Either way, whoever uses it the second time loses something.

I liked the first movie, the second one had a good werewolf in William. This movie gets points for staying consistent with the story line and actors. I won't see it in the theater but I will check it out on DVD.

For continuity sake, rather than rehash a plot point from the first movie in which we know how it will end, why not focus on the third elder? (Amelia) Viktor was the focus in the first, Markus was the focus in the second, and it would have been more fitting and interesting in that the movie would still be a pequel, yet we wouldn't know what happens and why. They could have used everyone, including Kate Beckinsale.
  • Taharqa
Everybody is putting this movie down, and so high on that bull-ish Twillight crap. Now that is a crappie looking movie, will be like "The Covenant" pure garbage. This and all the other UnderWorld movies blows crap like that away.
  • thefan
I love vampires and werewolves, and nobody else is making Vampire vs. werewolf movies, so I'll be going to see this one as well. This should be the best of the three, I like that it's set back in medieval times and there are no guns involved, strictly hand to hand combat. Ruthless, I love it.

    I totally agree.
  • terrance
anyone notice how similar Beckinsale and Mitra are in look??????????

i mean come on, they could be sisters
  • Serpente
As for Beckinsale and Mitra looking similiar, it was probably intentional due to the storyline of the movies. This movie would be fitting for the plot and the entire rise of the lycans aspect isn't that bad of an idea. There is vampire movie after vampire movie, but at what point do we see many modern lycan films arise?... I'm not saying it's going to be a blockbuster hit, but it'll be worth the watch. Why people feel the need to down every new movie or theme that arises is beyond me...
  • HIDE
terrance || why yes, i did notice. but only by a slight degree. Mitra isn't nearly an inch close to being as beautiful as Mrs. Kate. not ever. and as for this topic, this third UND looks highly dull and what else... oh, a waste of my time and money. but it is a true opinion of mine to fallow. the first i can agree; rather cluttered. the 2nd; more focused. like one person has already mentioned.
  • acemark
kate and mitra aren't too in similarity now. And I agree with HIDE on this one, not as beautiful as Kate Beckinsale. Honestly.
  • Its a vampire vs werewolf movie, these are the type of movies I been watching since back when I was a kid watching old universal monster movies. Plus this one deals with the past, that whole flash back scene in the first movie (which was the best part of that movie) is thats whole story expanded, I read the novel awhile back, it was called "Underworld: Blood Enemies" and its like a love story romeo and juliet type ish....but at the same time, the main werewolf from the first one *Lucian* goes and free's the werewolves from being the vampires slaves (The werewolves were treated as 'dogs' and were used to protect the vampires during the day light hours)____I think the movie looks great, alot of narrow minded people on this page
  • Tonya
Kate isnt in the new movie
  • adrian
this made me think that it should be the first to watch..like star wars...
