Who Should Direct The Next James Bond Movie?

Quantum of Solace director Marc Foster will not be returning for the 23rd film in the James Bond series, despite an offer to helm the next film.

“They offered me the next one, but at this point the pressure is so intense — it’s a year of not having a life,” Foster tells FirstShowing. “And I don’t know if I want to do that again. It’s literally not having a life, and I mean that, it’s not exaggerated. I feel like life is short, you have to find a balance.”

The studio has announced a 2010 date (but I’m guessing that might be pushed back til 2011). Rumor has it that Bond will return to the United States for a New York City-based adventure. But who should helm the next Bond film? Some have suggested Stephen Frears (The Queen), Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake), Fernando Meirelles (City of God), or Sam Mendes (Road to Perdition). Personally, I’d love to see Goldeneye/Casino Royale helmer Martin Campbell return.

  • Al
    Matthew Vaughn would be awesome
  • NINJARTIST
Either the guy who did GET SMART or the director of JOHNNY ENGLISH.
  • stuff happens
    wtfdo u hav issues
  • semper
I agree 100% on Martin Campbell - Casino Royale and Goldeneye are easily my 2 favourite Bonds. Campbell just seems to inherently understand what's needed for a Bond film, plus he's a kiwi :)

(Having said that, Lee Tamahori's a kiwi and he directed the worst Bond ever)
  • Panda
I second this.. when I checked who was directing quantum I was like.. wtf? why would they not bring the guy who made casino royale so great? and plus he did golden eye, another great.. its like.. wtf.
  • prop
martin campbell seems to do the whole relaunch thing well which is odd - why not carry it on. matthew vaughn would be great though. i wouldn't mind seeing david fincher have a go at it.
  • Christopher Marc
I agree with you Peter, Campbell should return....but I still think the suggestions of Vaughn and Meirelles are just more interesting....I still watch Layer Cake late at night when I get bored with the rest of my DVD collection...lol...and it would be cool to have Craig and Vaughn work together again....Meirelles can't be counted out as well....if the next film is centered in Asia or Russia then he'd be perfect....

I also like prop's suggestion about Fincher the only problem with that is he has way too my projects he's already working on...and Pitt isn't Bond..lol
  • MSanchez
What about Michael Mann, I think that would be interesting.
  • Ryan W
I wouldn't mind seeing what JJ Abrams could do with it. I thought he brought some life the Mission Impossible franchise. Just a thought.
  • Autosuggestion
Obviously, I haven't seen Quantum of Solace, so I don't want to sell Forster's work short, but why on earth didn't they just bring Martin Campbell back in the first place? He did such a terrific job with Casino Royale. That said, Campbell's new movie, Edge of Darkness, looks promising.
  • Yep! Martin Campbell!
  • sideshowRaheem
Christopher Nolan is a big James Bond fan I don't think I even have to explain how amazing that would be.

    Somebody call Brett Ratner!

All joking aside, they fucked up huge when they didn't re-enlist Campbell for this new one.

    Campbell.
  • simon
a reunion between vaughn and craig would be awesome but martin campbell would be just as great
  • eric
Matthew Vaughn would be my top pick as well. Having he & Craig together again would be great! When Craig was announced to be the next Bond I was stoked. I told every doubter & naysayer "watch Layer Cake" then eat crow.
  • Pakel
Matthew Vaughn could do a pretty good job sure.
But personnaly I'd like to see a guy like Pete Travis.
Or J.J. Abrams... Why not? We can dream...
  • JakePT
I say bring Campbell back, his previous two Bond movies, Goldeneye and Casino Royale, are by far my favourite.

If we're going with someone original I'd like to see Matthew Vaughn do it.
  • Jmoney
    Guy Ritchie
  • IAmTheBatman
    Nolan
  • Matthew Vaughn is where it is at...
  • patch
    danny boyle.
  • Indiefilm
    Agreed! Bring back Martin Campbell.
  • Marty J
    Antoine Fuqua!
  • cekma
I want it to be Tony Gilroy if it in fact takes place in NYC. He's is a ny native who can transform the city into a character like no other see michael clayton.
  • Jim
Guys they only bring in Campbell when they want to launch a new Bond. Then they milk the success of that one movie for as many sequels as they can until they need to bring him back again to reboot the franchise.
  • Andrew
As will always be the case for now on for me I will suggest christopher nolan.
  • Clive Barker.......do it
  • DREW
Quentin Tarantino has always said he'd love to do a bond film.
  • Paul Clarke
Martin Campbell declined to return to direct "Quantum of Solace", otherwise he would have been back. There are many dream directors for a Bond film, but realistically they don't have a chance in hell as they will generally not want to do it, plus this is not a director-driven series. Ridley Scott would be an interesting choice, one that may have a chance of happening.
  • A Better Class of Criminal
Campbell, Vaughn, Nolan... all sounds good to me. :)
  • Pill
    Tim Burton
  • who? how about the guy who made GOLDENEYE and CASINO ROYALE?
Martin Campbell FTW. much love to my fellow German, forster, but even though i havent seen solace yet, it seems to Bourney to compete with the glory that is Royale, for example. i dont know. campbell ftw.
  • Martin Campbell or Matthew Vaughan and on the outside looking in - Alfonso Cuaron maybe?
  • Not a Fan
I thing the question should be..
WHO should be the next James Bond.
I don't like this guy, too Ogly!
  • If John Frakenheimer was alive I would say him! But Ang Lee may be an interesting choice too.
  • Anthony
How about seeing the new one before making decisions.
  • Here is some more possible guys I would like to see - notice they are all from BMW's - THE HIRE

    Alejandro González
    Iñárritu
    John Woo
    Joe Carnahan
    Tony Scott
  • AntoBlueberry
I'd say Vaughn or Alfonso Cuaron. Both on my wish list to direct my own JamesBond-ish script.
  • Jacko
they probably wouldn't go for it but Steven Spielburg has been interested in doing a Bond movie for years.
  • Robert Rodriguez; Quentin Tarantino; Zack Snyder or Frank Miller?
  • Danatic
Seriously, I wouldn't think of a better way to 'waste' a year or two than directing a Bond movie...
  • Max
Darren Afronsky, Chris Nolan, or John Woo
  • TheDaftPunk
Took the words out of my mouth. Martin Campbell would be my choice. I REALLY enjoyed Casino Royale, and am a little upset QoS may not be as good.
  • whatever
call me crazy but I'd love to see michael bay take a shot at bond.
  • Ian
After GoldenEye and Casino Royale, Martin Campbell should do every Bond film until he dies.
  • Delta Assault
    @whatever

I think we can guess what Bond's Aston Martin would turn into, then.
  • rich
christopher nolan-put a lot of Bond references in TDK

    JJ Abrams-big bond fan

Steven Spielberg-has wanted to direct a bond film forever. but they may not let him do it b/c he's american. so that would put abrams on the outs too.

    Martin campbell-Casino Royale. 'Nuff said.
  • frank
michael winner is the one and only director i can see doing the next bond movie.
  • Captain Awesome
    Kevin Smith
  • Pilled
    George Lucas
